I don't know why they've got it into there heads that computers and networks are somehow different from everything else because your using a computer does copyright law sease to exist? We don't neen new laws when the existing ones have worked just fine (or to well in tha case of copyright).
If I kill someone by hitting them over a kead with a palm piolt, is it any different from hacking there car and causing there breaks to fail, or just cutting hte break cable.. NO...
There is one strange case where things may be different, in the UK you can't be tried for poisioning if the person dies more than a year a after the poisioning was alleged to have occured, with a computer it's easy to produce a time bomb effect.
"But the technologies don't start that way" At least 80% of utilities could have been recognised as Utilities within a few years of startup (or less).
Utilities usually place a levi on Businesses to reduce the cost the the consumer, an example could be a 1% tax on revinue earned from pesonal data, going more-or-less directly to network infrastructor providers.
Well, here's the crux. Most people don't know what is in there best interest.
Mr A reads John Smith and decides to do things that are good for 'HIM'
Mr B reads John Nash and decides to do things that are good for every one.
Mr C reads John Nash and John Smith and decides what is good for everyone is good for him and dies in a paradox of madness selfishly helping everyone to a better world (am I really helping 'everyone' or am I just helping my self )
but seriously, I run Mandrake (versions 7.0 to 8.2) at home and found it to be a $%$~% I don't know about the other distributions.
I do want Mandrake to succede, every release I think to my self, I hope they've sorted this out etc... but since 8.0 they've been digging a deeper hole to climb out off.
If you thinks it's just me goto Mandrake forum and have a look at what evryone else says, look for KDE3, ADSL gcc etc....
I'm looking at rebuilding my system from source and not using a distributaion at all(though maby some source components from some distributions), because in my experiance there far more hastle then there worth, when they work there great but when they don't you don't know how the've screwed you system up which makes fixing a hell of a lot harder.
Well apart from being a commie, There are some services that become so called utilities, In the UK they are/used to be Water, electricity, gas, the telephone, mail delivery, public transport, air traffic controle, the police, fire service, hospitals, schools etc... Most of which were sold off during the eighties, would you like Law to be controled by a market economy? if so would you accept the Law makers tieing you into there variant, we'll shoot anyone that looks like they might be a criminal, make up new Laws when we think were getting ripped off, have an elegable EULA and driving out everyone else out
Sadly it looks like the internet is slowly heading down the same route as other communications/network technologies.
As soon as someone realises that there's money or power to be made(and lots of it) a once free (as in speech) technology becomes market controlled and regulated, in general the overall network gets dumbed down, and all but obsolete as new technologies come along.
Here are a few examples from the past few hundred years or so..
Science-Art, initially sciences and arts were free (thousands of years ago), they go locked down and made illegal in part for a hell of a long time.
snail-mail, this is a very good example of a vanishing technology, currently being opened up to full competition in the UK with the possibility of increased prices and a poorer service(YMMV).
Good old radio, In the beginning anyone could put together an AM radio and broadcast anything, now a days they even control what you can listen to, and the airwaves are all sold out.
The Telephone, the common telephone has started to vanish in the UK, cell phones and broad-band are replacing standard telephone technologies almost to the point where telephone networks no longer operate for voice communications. There's a very long story here especially in the US with bell labs and all that, I believe there are lots of regulations in place if you ever wanted to start up a Telco. The selling off of the air waves regulation of other networks by governments makes telephone networks highly capitalised.
And now the internet,
Getting less private and more dictated, the market is not yet saturated enough for it to make a big difference to Joe public and corporations and governments are looking at taking over before Joe public realises what there going to miss.
I don't(didn't) know how to do a quick sort, so i decided to work out the fastest way so sort based upon first principles, and guess what I ended up with a quick sort (faster than most/all of the implementations I found when searching the web!).
Most people would say a quick sort was a radical implementation and could be patented, but I worked it out using locical application and no prior knowlage of how a quick sort worked, except that it sorted.
It wouldn't require genetic manipulation to get people to learn from one another, but it would require genetic manipulation to remove all the animal instincts, we are afterall barbaric animals at hart (or at least 99.9% of us).
There is very little you can do to 'teach' most people, there just not made that way. Most pepole cant understand the kind of philosiphy required to implement such a utopia, this can be expressed as a mild autism, when compaired to those who can understand.
1: autistic ( you can-not understand that other people may see things differently from you)
2: autistic-normal ( the double bluff, you cannot understand that someone might know what your thinking)
3: normal ( unable to fully comprehend the double bluff (in some circumstances nothing matters))
4: Full realisation ( we and everything around us are all made of star dust, I am no different from the air that I breath)
How are they going to tell the differance between people who live in london and don't own a car and but have borrowed one to driver OUT OF LONDON for the day/ever!
First you shun thousands of years of cultural thinking and even go down the GOD road.
Then you say that the development of the modern world was down to technology, but using a very narrow definition of technology.
While it is true that some 'Christian' morals were abandoned (mainly the power-monger ones to do with science being black magic &co), general communist type morals were eroded and replaced with strict ownership laws, e.g. feudalism etc.. These rights are/were slowly being given back to the people.
Copyright has a long tradition, It wasn't something drempt up overnight and in IMHO on the whole not to bad, the only thing I would change would be to reduce the length of the copyright(basicly putting the law back to where it used to be).
I live in the UK, and it seems that the US and UK are making extram changes about somthing they don't understand, they should ask them selfs: what is copyright for? and is there anything wrong with the current system. and I think they'll find that copyright it to protect the original producer from being ripped off and at the same time to encourage creativity and derived works and that there's nothing wrong with the current systems.
There should be plenty of documentation about setting up Mail servers on UNIX, getting the data from exchange to the UNIX system may be a little harder though.
You best bets are fetchmail, A UNIX mail transport agent, this can pull all the mail accross (hopefully).
op failing that, setup you mail servers on UNIX and write some VB script (in outlook coes you have it already) to transfer the data/accounts accross using MAPI.
So men can get pregnant hey... Physicly (that is in fact) black african races have longer ham strings and are better runners, white nordic people tend to have better strength, got a problem with that, wake up to the real world, were all different just because you don't like someone saying so, it doesn't change the fact.
It's nice and all to have a P2P RPM network, but the money would have been better spent improving RPM's.
RPM's need to be made far more granuler this would sort out all thoes evil dep problems which in my experiance are. RPM X requires RPM's A B C D E.... P to be installed where RPM's D-P are obscure features that no-one ever uses.
No if all RPM's were in nice sized chunks you would only have to install the chunk you wanted/required. This would keep the install base down, and force packagers/programmers to do things in a nice modula way.
Also... Why can't I use source RPM's that optionally compile themselfs after install...
Why don't RPM's seem to be signed!!!
RPM's should have "where can i get updates / security patches etc.. from" properties.
Now if they sotred that out then maybe you wouldn't need each distro to build there RPM's and each RPM to be so huge an bloaty (especially when you take deps into account!!)

I don't know how this didn't make/. but BGM are apparently withdrawing stock of 'Elvis V JXL' (currently high in the UK charts) to boost a 'kiddie pop' record in the charts.
If it were the case that they are selling you a license to listen to a particular CD(whithout the ability to backup) then the price of CD's is FAR TO HIGH.
Did you know.....
A major record lable(mgm) is withdrawing music in the UK charts~(elvis Vs JXL in order to increase the chart raiting of a new release(kiddy pop)

What a load of blox " These signals travel faster in the presence of some materials than others. Air, for instance, allows the fastest movement of all, because it provides essentially no resistance. When traveling near solids, however, the movement tends to kick up opposing positive charges. These charges can distract the signal from completing its appointed rounds.
Though these signals move more slowly in the presence of silicon than they do in air, silicon offers less resistance than many other materials do. That's why it has been used in microchips for so long. But engineers are always looking for ways to turbocharge their chips. Historically, they have been able to do this by inscribing more transistors into ever-tinier spaces. But some worry that a physical limit may be approaching. "
SFAIK, this is shit. Silicon is good because it produces the second hightest number of compounds (carbon comes tops) and it's metalic, SFA to do with risistance. copper/gold and diamond have less resistance?

I can only do so many things at once and manage to eat.
Many years ago I put a few enhancments into my onw build of POV
write out a z buffer with the image using -z at the command line.
and some changes that allow colour gradients to be used for normal gradients.
They still don't seem to have that stuff in pov 3.5
I've also got a reasonable (but 4 years old!) fractal landscape generator I wrote for POV,
oh and when compiled with djgpp I got a 5% performance boost over the stock dos build.
those were the days.
statisticly, for somthing to have an garanteed (95%) uptime of 1 month it must have no downtime in 95 months!
5+ nines are great but you can still go down 1 pico second an hour, that's a hell of a lot of outage.
