The other issue here is cost.

Some background on Randy Mott, Dell's CIO. Before joining Dell, he was the CIO at Wal*Mart. Both Dell and Wal*Mart are kings of supply chain and operations management, especially cost reduction. This guy is very good at squeezing cost out of corporate IT infrastructures while delivering first rate solutions to his internal corporate customers. Any hyperbole aside, if Randy Mott speaks, he knows what he's talking about, and he knows what he's doing. It may not be right for every organization, but I guarantee it'll be right for Dell.

Let's not leave out mute. Not the inability to speak, but when used instead of moot.

Every time I hear someone say it's a mute point, I want to rip their tongue out and render them mute. Then their poor spoken grammar would be a moot point.

  19. Is there a parallel here? on FSF Issues GNU/Linux Name FAQ · · Score: 1

As I read through this thread, it occurred to me that this appears to be a debate not just about a name, but about what consitiutes an operating system. (Call the kernel Linux, but once you wrap the supporting utilities, etc., around it, it becomes GNU/Linux.)

Wasn't that also one of the fundamental architecture questions argued before the courts in the Microsoft/DOJ case? In other words, what components were critical to the Windows operating system truly being "Windows"?

I'm not sure what to make of this - it may not mean anything, and maybe I'm off base - but if nothing else I think it demonstrates that the lines between what constitutes an operating system and an operating environment, if you will, are blurry, whether it's open or closed source.

Like many of us, I was at work when the attacks occurred, and once I found out what was going on, went to the major news web sites for more information (remember, the inital reports were simply that a plane had struck one of the World Trade Center Towers). Of course, by that time, the major news sites were inaccessible due to the amount of traffic.

Until I was able to get to a TV to get more details, Slashdot was my main source of information on the events of the day, and IIRC, it did a pretty good job of keeping up to date on what had happened.

So thanks, everyone - the editors and the readers that posted with information that day. Good work was done here a year ago today.
