I didn't get the impression that race was a huge issue in the novels

I can understand someone not seeing that. The more subtle the message, the more powerful the art, I guess.

LeGuin is not happy about the whitey cast because of two things.

    1) Race is a big deal in her work because it wasn't a big deal.
    2) Race is (sometimes) a big deal in her work because it's really (or also) referring to gender. (or visa versa)

The thing that (at least in the sixties and even seventies) that was important was that her portrayl of race wasn't a big smelly trout moral issue; LeGuin just presented the characters as people.

Sometimes, though, in her work she talks about gender issues (Left Hand of Darkness of course springs to mind) and the subtext is clearly "i'm also talking about race here, white sci-fi reading America!". And versa visa.

Although her stories are fun stories, she is above all a *social* science fiction author, so there *is* also a subtext present, whether or not one chooses to pay attention to commentary on social discourse.

It almost seems intentional during the day, but at night, you know the lights were designed to turn red when cars approach.

Yes. They do this (at least in my area) to decrease traffic fatalities. The theory is that making lights turn red on vehicle approach decreases the liklihood that people will blow through the intersection. If the light is red well before you actually get there, you won't run it. If it's *just turning yellow/red* then certain types tend to speed up to make the light.

When the "but it *just* turned red" light runners blow through an intersection at 2am they have a tendancy to run into cars trying to cross the thoroughfare.

Although annoying to responsible drivers, red on approach is easy to implement and has some marginal increase in safety.

Not to mention the degree will get you past the HR department.

If you're going through the HR department, then you're doing something wrong. HR is for companies to hire and manage food service people or janitors or laundry people. And HR stuff like insurance and benefits.

HR is a barrier to entry. If you're going through HR, then you're (usually needlessly) subjecting yourself to a filter that weeds out job candidates.

Networking is the key to getting good jobs. Somebody you did a favor for a year ago will be looking for a new employee a year from now. Someone you were friends with in college will think of you when their manager asks if they know a good person for that position that needs to be filled.

My advice for getting a better job:
    Be nice.
    Wait.

I'm not saying people should understand how DLLs work or what TCP/IP is, but I am saying that should have a basic understanding of "this is not normal computer behavior, I need to have it fixed or I will harm myself/others" or "this is what I can do to avoid computer problems."

Drivers have to know what to do in the event of a blow-out, when to have their lights turned on, how to drive safely over ice/standing water; why shouldn't computer users be expected to know how to not get trojans/viruses and what to do when their computer acts slow and has porn pop-ups?

I say that, yes, the racism of the early 20th century was worse than that of the late 19th century. Before evolution, slaves were just animals, savages. Elitist, yes, but not racist. There were attempts to tie "science" to the white man's *obvious* superiority (phrenology comes to mind), but it was mainly grounded in a tautological begging the question "of all the ways of life and civilizations of the world, ours is the best, therefore we are the best".

Post Darwin, there was *"real" science* that showed that even if you dressed the noble savage and taught him table manners, there was something fundamentally *inferior* in him that could not be removed, a taint that was tied to race.

So, yes, racism got worse because of teaching evolution. It's not that evolution was or is racist, it's just that as a tool for hate-mongering and promoting racist agenda, it was so much more effective than what existed before.
