I agree with everything you said. The problem anymore seems to be with how the raising of the youth is handled. There seems to be this huge movement of protecting children from everything that could potentially be harmful to them in any way, shape or form. This has the hurtful side effect of preventing them from developing useful problem solving skills. So by the time they are out of high school and moving into a college environment these things are foreign to them.

I do not do this with my own children, and have been able to note some major differences in attitude towards things between them and their friends. Better or worse still has yet to be completely decided. Personally I see it as better as they are more able to handle their own problems then having to run to someone else all the time. But they're only 14 and 10, so time will tell eventually.

Fear of even minimal social interaction like this could be a major player in this. And I would imagine that a professor has the power to tell any particular student to cease and desist or kindly show them to the door.

I am not afraid to tell someone to stop, but then again I'm old enough that I no longer care. Most people that do the annoying behavior in the first place are pricks though, and probably will not stop if asked by another student. Then a hammer gets involved....and the police....

This is where I think I'm fairly lucky. The team I am a part of is on the younger side of the scale, used to communicating primarily through short IM/email messages constantly. I work from home on most days, and we do work really well together, but as you said it hinges on being able to keep each other in the loop of what is going on everywhere.

All I need is a wireless connection to fire up my VPN, and no one can tell where I'm at most of the time.

I went the Brewster's Millions method and wrote in None of the Above. The fun thing is if no one voted someone would still be declared the winner and nothing would change (as far as presidential candidates go). So I agree with you, I didn't want EITHER of them, so I'm going to complain all I want to. The fact that we will never see anything better is the saddest part of the whole situation.

Have to agree with you completely. I do not quite make the $75k mark, but not far off, and the area I live in is pretty cheap as far as cost of living. I have a wife and two kids, and I'm not hurting for money, and I can say I'm happy.

I'm willing to go with the "just simply cranky" comment.

The problem I run into was I was brought up to give respect to those that earned it. Just simply being old does not guarantee that you've earned my respect. That and most "elders" that I deal with on a regular basis refuse to ever admit they are wrong, and end up throwing a fit and avoiding any interacting with a given subject when proven that they are in fact wrong.

Maybe that is why my work gave me this nice laptop with all the blue LEDs on the touch bar...

On a more serious note though, I do have to agree with you. I spent a week on the beach in OBX with the family, didn't take my laptop, had my phone with me but left it in the house we rented, just kicked back and listened to the ocean with a beer in my hand. I felt a million times better after that, so I definitely agree that it's a good idea to just get away from technology completely ever so often.

Sometimes even small breaks can help, like taking the kids to the pool for the day, going out and flying kites, or anything else just to get out of the house and away from the noise.

This. The RIAA is trying to back-door some deals instead of doing everything out in the open anymore where we can publicly mock them. This is the same problem I have with it.
