I don't see why you think that's my idea. What I said above is exactly the oposite, that the source code (and the whole process, btw) is available to several different organizations that have nothing to do with the government, including oposition political parties but answering your question, I don't think we should fear the government, the government should fear us and should be trusted to a certain point, open to debate and with all the possible auditing tools we can have. Blindly, never:)
I never said it's impossible to fraud it but it has a lot of advantages over the paper system. For one, there's no doubt if a vote is valid or not and it can be counted very fast and accurately. Actually, in 1 hour after the closing time for voting, we already had the results in several cities.
I friend of mine, returning to Brazil was in this mess. He had to sleep 2 nights at the airport and was booked in a flight back via Santiago, Chile, arriving 4 days after what was originaly planned. From now on we're calling it DHellta and refusing to book any more flight with it.
For Brazilians this has an interesting meaning as Geni is the name of a prostitute in a very famous song causing it to become a sort of "generic whore name".
I have to agree with that. I have 2 WRT54G, one V3 and other V4 both running dd-wrt and apart from upgrading the software, they run 24x7, never requiring a reboot.
I'm about the same position as you are, late 30s and done about the same but I didn't do it on CE classes but in EE. At that time, at least here in Brazil, CE was very incipient most of the work was done in mainframes and the embedded software was created by electronics engineers doing microprocessor programming. Well, I still do embedded for a living, right now for Canonical and I have to agree that's damn hard find good embedded developpers.
I really enjoyed LOTR, really, but there is a project that Weta has in the pocket that I would like much more to see realized: a live-action Evangelion movie. They have being studying it for quite some time but it's "on hold" for quite some time already.
I'm not sure if you're trolling or just clueless. I'll give you the benefit of doubt and tell you this: 1) Non-free codecs and some applications that you cited above aren't there not "because of religious beliefs" (whatever that means) but because there's licensing, patents and/or redistribution rights problems. 2) With one package installation those problems are solved.
Since I was a child (I'm almost 39 now) I had 2 chronicle problems: tonsils infections and allergies. The only thing that cured both was homeopathy and, believe me, I tried everything else. If it's the power of suggestion, placebo effect (which I really don't believe as it wouldn't work on animals and don't start about placebo-by-proxy, that's something I find even harder to believe) or some sort of yet unknown form of quantum-based effect, I don't know and I really don't care, it solved my problems. One thing that really piss me off is how easy people calls things fake or quackery. Don't you ever considered that might have something going on that the current science don't understand? At least take this as an option.
I don't know there but here in Brazil this is material for a class action suit. A company can't legally fire people and replace them for others with lower wages. Actually, they can't fire you and hire later for a lower salary either. I think our work-related laws here need a very good revamp but there is a few good things there.
I think that any piece of software that is suited for this kind of use can't be related to the Windows we know. I just can't imagine the UK military to be *this* stupid. On a second tought, they are military, aren't they?:)
We have here a special set of laws called "Consumer's Defense Code". One of the laws says that if the product is even *advertized* by some price, the vendor is obligated to sell at that price. There is some few exceptions to cover cases that can me considered a legitimate mistake (like a printing error in a flier, for instance) but the mistake have to be largely advertized before the sale. Once the sale is done, is final.
It does not matter how trivial. If you're into something like this, aways write it down and have the other part sign it. Period. I've had more than my share on this kind of issues and even turn some jobs down because of this so, better safe than sorry.
About 10 years ago I was working for the local branch of a large medical insurance company. We were going to move to a brand new 3 store office and my boss asked me to design the new network. We had about 150 PCs and a few servers. Most of the PCs would have their places at the first floor, we (IT) would be on the second and the rest of the PCs on the 3rd floor. So I went for something easy and simple: a rack with patch panels and switches on each floor and a redundant fiber backbone connecting them. Easy to keep, fix and expand. When I presented it to my boss he said, fine but those switches you're asking (good manageable Cisco's) are quite expensive, can we do with others? I said "Yes but we are going to loose some ability to diagnose and expand, split lans, etc". New design and again my boss asked about the fiber backbone because would be expensive, etc. Well, to make a long story short, I endded up with just one rack on the second floor with el cheapo switches, all the CAT5s coming directly from the PCs to this rack so, instead of having just a few fibers from one floor to another we had a large chunk of cables. Of course that any idea of mainintance or expansion would be a nightmare. Luckly, I left this job some time later.
I don't know about the rest but homeopathy did work for me in 2 different ocasions and problems. When I was younger I had chronical infections in the tonsils. Remove them is not a good idea because they are a barrier to worst kinds of infections in your respiratory aparatus. After years of antibiotics my parents decided to give homeopathy a try and, guess what? I'm cured. Later in my life I developed alergy. Same history, I took common drugs that made feel better and later, there comes the alergy again. I've been treated with homeopathy for the last few months and my alergies are almost gone. So, I really don't know if the theory behind it is BS or whatever, I can only tell you that it works.
It's not about the people that are being sued right now but the abuse of power that the RIAA got. It's about their refusal to change their business pratices to follow the technology and choose to sue instead.
We do have lots of problems here, indeed, but at least privacy is not a concern for the average guy. Oh, there is news from time to time about wiretaps and such but they are very restricted and a court order is required. All kinds of comunications are protected by the constitution so yes, we're good, thanks. One tip for my European friends: housing is cheap here, the people is nice and the weather even nicer so come along:)
American courts are a model of principle and fairness, as amazing as that may seem.
Sorry but I live in Brazil and I'm getting more and more amazed indeed (not in a good way) by USA's legal system. Your Founding Fathers are probably turning over in their tumbs for the way the great principles on what your Nation was founded are been twisted to serve closed groups and corporations. You have been deprived of your individual liberty by things like DRM and Freedom Act based on fears and corporative greedy. I do really feel sorry for you. We are far from been a perfect country but at least on this point, we are far ahead.

As a matter of fact, contrary to what Wikipedia says, the source code *is* available. The Ministério PÃblico (something like the public prosecutor in US), the OAB - Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil, an organ that congregates all lawyers in the country and any of the political parties can have access not only to the source code but to the compilation, digital signing and installation process. They also can run simulations and test the system for security and fraud and request any ballot to be audited. The whole software and data is also available for 2 years after the election. During the election days, representatives of any party can stay at any polling station to be sure that the election is not being rigged in this point. Personally, I think our system is quite secure and would require a major conspiracy involving basically everyone.
Now where is the link to the source code and how can I verify that it is the code that was really running on the machines?

Yeah, it's not free as in speech, but otherwise beats the crap out of vnc.
Captain Obviousman.
FreeNX is free and works to what he wants as well.

I hope not, that would kill the whole idea and it will become a "mecha" movie and that's it.

"Miro" is spanish for "see" or "watch" so makes sense. Why say it's abstract?

... stop buying records! Once you people there start to act and make a stand, hurting where matters, they will start to listen.
