  10. Re:Quality counts? on The Music Biz Is the New Book Industry · · Score: 2

I'm deeply suspicious of an argument that claims that the quality of music in general has declined. It's too subjective, quality's too hard to measure and it's too difficult to compare like with like - what are reasonable criteria to compare say 20's Jazz with 00's Trance or 50's Rock'n'roll with 80's synth-pop?

But as long as we're making generalisations - here's one of mine -

90% of anything creative is crap.

90% of books are not worth reading. 90% of movies are boring. 90% of music is unoriginal and uninspiring. 90% of the music in Mozart's day was like that, 90% of music today is like that, 90% of music will be like that in the future.

The trick is finding the 10%. Also realize that bits of my 10% are in your 90% of crap. I love some movies that you'll hate and you'll adore some books I can't stand.

So any economic model for making money out of music which depends on raising overall quality is doomed.

  13. who mentioned 'evil'? on Director Attacks MPAA Piracy Claims · · Score: 4, Insightful

Cox isn't saying the MPAA is evil, he never uses the word.

He's merely putting the claims of lost millions in perspective.

    His argument in a nutshell

    - the studios are crying wolf over money lost to piracy
    - they already make millions whilst independent film-makers struggle to get finances to get movies made
    - the measures they want to put in place to counter piracy will hurt the independents even more. In effect they'll be barriers to entry in the market.

I thought it was a well-written thoughtful article.

  14. 35mm an 'open standard' on Director Attacks MPAA Piracy Claims · · Score: 2

What Cox is effectively saying - but he doesn't use this terminology because his background is film not computers - is that 35mm is an open standard whilst digital shows all the signs of becoming a proprietary one controlled by a Hollywood cartel (a la DVD).

Think Microsoft's domination of the desktop applied to cinema projection.

Whilst one reason Cox is against digital projection is because he doesn't think it's currently as good aesthetically. The reason he's expounding here is Open Standards versus Proprietary ones - something I would have thought most Slashdotters could understand and agree with.

Still, while this paints a picture in which the majority will always go back to a few sources, ignoring the rest, at least in the digital age, those of us who do want to go discover an unheard of musician, writer or artist from remote locations have a much easier time doing so.

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree I question the 'much easier' part. They still have to have some way of letting you know that their site exists and that it contains something you might like. That'll mean advertising in some form.

  19. Bad news for Independent Artists? on Modeling Linking on the Web · · Score: 2

One of the things we hear a lot on Slashdot is how evil RIAA/MPAA and the media companies behind them are. And what's often brought up is the fact that these companies are screwing the artists, that these artists would do better to establish a direct relationship with their audience, and that the internet is perfect for that.

I've always been sceptical of this argument because I think the effect of promotion is a lot greater than people generally believe. A musician playing live can generate a little local word of mouth - but how do you translate that into a wider appeal?

This adds another reason to be sceptical. So maybe getting onto Amazon's stocklist/recommendations will become more important than getting on a radio playlist?

  20. Re:you'd keep 7 years of video? on The Past and Future of the Hard Drive · · Score: 2

I can easily imagine that by the time 120Tb is available it will be 'fillable'.

Video editting will be done at higher resolutions because it'll be possible and with HDTV and digital projection it'll be needed.

Maybe by that time (10-15 years? I didn't read the article) we'll have 3D displays or movies. That's a whole new dimension of information to store - it could easily account for a couple of orders of magnitude of increase.

I can also imagine that some people will become "information hoarders" - never throwing anything away, automatically downloading and keeping anything that might be of use or interest later. That'll happen more if people use software/filesystems that allow for easier organisation/searching.

And software may bloat up even more that it has at present. I can imagine software packages coming with built-in instructional videos to supplement or replace help files. I've seen this on a small scale with some things already.

Will everyone fill 120Tb? No. But some will.
