And where is the electorate going to express their frustration? Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin. Each more interested in preventing the other from gaining power and serving their masters whom control the purse strings. Who will these people turn to as there is not yet a serious third party? Disposing of one politician for another will not do very much, especially when it comes to the issues of privacy. Everyone in power is more concerned about being caught and that the whistle blowers are punished rather than the illegal activities were happening in the first place.

A new viable national party has to rise. And it must hold itself accountable far better than the laws require. For example, limits to campaign contributions and maybe even considering excluding contributions from corporations and lobbyist organizations. Third party auditing of their books with any member found in breach of party financial laws required to resign immediately. A method of recalling a member of the party whether they are running for an election or have even one it (of course different rules in each case). This would allow the electorate to recall a politician of this party even if the jurisdiction did not. Rules for completely being open concerning meetings with lobbyists and sponsors. There's a whole number of issues that would need to be raised in order for a new party to separate itself from the others and show that it really does have the interest of the people first and foremost at heart. Of course the biggest test would come when someone breaks one of the rules and needs to be removed.

Whether or not to use encryption isn't really the question. Some level of encryption is required because there will be bad people out there that will want to do you harm. The problem lately is that we have been given evidence that the major democratic governments are no longer trustworthy. We have gone past the point of talking whether we need to encrypt our messages or to double the number of bits in an encryption method. These are just bandages being applied to the hemorrhaging of our basic freedoms. We need to stop the bleeding at the source with political reforms. And to achieve those we need a new party that will stand up for the rights of the people unlike all of the existing mainstream parties who cater to their rich special interest groups.

I thought that NASA has already given up on sending people to low Earth orbit as private companies are out to do that (and currently has Russia available to do so). What I don't understand is why NASA wants to reinvent the wheel for missions further out into space. Why does the NASA mission have to start from the ground with a new launcher for astronauts?

I would suggest using the ISS as a staging point to missions further out into the solar system. Create a heavy launch rocket for cargo (or use one that already exists) and put everything into orbit so that it could be connected to the ISS. Launch the astronauts up to the station using conventional methods (or those upcoming). They check out the vehicle while at the ISS and once everything is okay they depart. Coming back from the mission they re-attach to the space station and astronauts come down using whatever means is in use (Soyuz, etc).

  17. Shouldn't have filters anyway on The Shortest Internet Censorship Debate Ever · · Score: 2

Besides not being 100% reliable I don't think the government should be filtering any media (books, Internet, radio, TV). I don't want an elected body to force their morals on me and my family. Every household should be able to enforce their own standards. I would have no problem if the government forced the ISPs to provide a filter that people could opt in to which allowed them to customize exactly the content that was prevented from being shown. It would have to be completely open and transparent. So if someone clicked on the option to prevent sexually explicit material then they would be able to see a list of sites that would be forbidden and a list of keywords that would cause pages from downloading. Maybe even going so far as to allowing each household (user?) to white list sites and keywords.

That being said I do believe that some material should not be available but I think the best way to stop it is have people report it to the police when it is found. Then have the authorities target the creators and distributors of such content.

The danger to free speech is too great by placing filters in place.

Linux is open source but you don't expect everyone that runs it to be able to understand the code. That's not the point. Lawyers are like exactly like developers in that they are educated to understand the code of law. The rest of us are users and when we need advice we go to see a "developer".

I do think it is important to make law understandable to a greater number of people but when you confuse the terminology used to describe your mission. It sounds more like he's trying to use software development methodologies to create legal contracts. I'd hate to be at the conference when the waterfall vs.Agile method debate breaks out between the lawyers.
