New Doctor Who Actor To Be Revealed This Sunday

New submitter b06r011 writes "The 12th actor to play Doctor Who will be revealed on BBC1 this Sunday at 1900. Rupert Grint and Peter Capaldi have been tipped as favourites to replace Matt Smith but that is no reason to stop idle speculation on a Friday afternooon. This all raises an interesting point though — particularly for Dr Who, where the replacement of an actor whilst maintaining the character is a key part of the plot. Would you rather find out in advance or wait until the end of the regeneration sequence?"

In the original series, there were cases of Time Lords trying to get more regenerations (particularly the Master) but no cases of Time Lords being gifted with them. The Master got a new body by effectively swiping someone elses. The closest that the old series ever came to gifting anyone with new regenerations was the Time Lords promising the Valyard that they'd give him the rest of the Doctor's regenerations. So, that would imply that they could give someone someone else's regenerations, but there's still nothing there about being able to reset the regeneration count or anything like that.

The _only_ case of someone being gifted with new regenerations was the Master in the new series. He was outright killed off in the 1996 TV movie, but somehow the Time Lords brought him back and gave him a new set of regenerations, because they wanted him for the Time War (which is how he was able to not only have yet another new body in the new series but also regenerate). And it was pretty clearly created as a quick cop out explanation as to how they got the Master back in spite of the fact that he had been killed off.

Regardless, it would be trivial enough for the writers to give the Doctor new regenerations prior to the end of the 13th Doctor's tenure, whenever that is. Even if the series had previously stated that it was impossible for a Time Lord to get new regenerations, they'd come up with some excuse as to why it would be possible for him. Hopefully, they come up with something good to explain it when they do it, but since they can make up pretty much whatever they want and frequently ignore continuity, it's not like writing a story where he gets new regenerations would be hard.

IMHO, they've already resolved this question. How many times has The Doctor's companions been warned in the last few seasons the the Doctor is a liar? The one common trait the show has carried all these years is the the mystery of the Doctor's origins. I think these statements about The Doctor lies and that he can't be trusted are a hint that anything the Doctor has ever said about his past are lies to keep his past hidden. This can be further backed up when you think of all the contradictions The Doctor has given when stating his age and the like...

Far too many of the stories seem rushed. The pace needs to be notched down and story given more depth with some more richness to the character. They should pick someone that could carry that sort of role. The only thing I've seen Grint perform in is the Harry Potter movies, and while he did an admirable job as Ron Weasley, I don't know that he'd have the presence to carry the role of the Doctor (perhaps I'm mistaken).

Also, I'd like the Doctor's mortality (and maybe a view into his psyche regarding the subject) to be explored. Presumably, Time Lords have finite regenerations (at one time indicated to be 12) - well, this new Doctor will be at (or nearly at) his final regeneration: will he accept it or struggle to for a way to prolong his life? Will it make him less brash/more timid? Will he consider retirement? Will he seek out his daughter and hand her the torch to become the defender of mankind and meddler in time and space?
