It is NOT safe. It may be *safer* than some other choices (radiation release from fossil fuels is substantially higher than nuclear powered generators), but it is a stretch to call a technology that produces deadly by-products that last in some cases millions of years (plutonium) "safe".
The DOE funds research into nuclear in the BILLIONS, versus *even safer* energy tech like wind and solar. In fact, the DOE budget for clean renewable energy was in the millions while nuclear was in the billions. Why is this? Perhaps because of that nasty other side of nuclear - weapons.
Nuclear ran by a stable governmental agency *might* be capable of limiting and controlling weapons tech for itself and leaking to another country - I don't think this has happened yet. How safe can nuclear really be (Chernobyl and 3 mile aside) if by definition it helps other groups develop nuclear weapons?
Meanwhile, wind and solar are really on the cusp of being marketable *right now*. No nasty weapons tech by-product. No more waste disposal problem, etc. Just shift a few $bil to where we should be putting it and we are there.
A member of the Board came up with a sneaky plan based on the concept - any PR is good PR, even if its bad PR. the KBOE realized that their Flock was so ignorant, so backwards, so underserved, and so unexposed that they used reverse, divine-guided, scientology to bring attention, media, dollars into the state.
i am posting this because i too am not a fan of quickens tech support.
i paid my quicken tax again for the 3rd time in about 6 years - quicken home & biz 2005. i need to track a bunch of consulting for different companies, as well as my wifes 'horse boarding' company (our horse + 2 friends horses).
i need to create invoices in the business section and i like to make a PDF rather then a hardcopy and mail. all of our customers like to receive the invoice via email.
i was shocked when i tried to print an invoice to a PDF and got an acrobat barf-error message. other reports and views print to PDF fine.
i called tech support and the tech on the other side duplicated the problem. i then asked what can be done. he said nothing, that the developers wont listen to the tech support guys. i wrote several emails and sent them to as many different depts as i could, sales, Q&A, user feedback forms, etc.
for the millionth time, will the detractors from wind power include the cost of the *defense budget*, *health cost of coal miners*, *cleanup costs from oil spills worldwide*, etc., etc., in **THEIR** calculations?
i was downloading using the account and about half way through, the download stopped. i re-DL'd, then it got kicked again. finally it said bugmenot account invalid or wrong pass.
someone who remembers basic physics please verify or correct me - in order to figure out how far you want to go, you need to balance: - the total weight of the cable (mass X length X gravity (which decreases over length to zero) - depending on where your length gets you, you now need to calculate how much mass you need to create enough centripetal force to balance out your cable (+ load) weight.
it seems like the longer the elevator, the necessary counterweight and then corresponding required cable strength goes up pretty fast.
hmm im thinking this gets beyond basic calculations pretty quick with all the variation in gravity all the way up.
this server reminds me of my time during the colo/5pagepowerpoint=$5MVC/weneedaNetASAP days and suns *highly* optimistic "we put the DOT in.COM" advertising in the late 90s. dont know what street value for one of these is today but sheesh, putting one in the car? that borders on sacriligious - call the SUN police! wait, they fired them all!
like all previous flavors of dsl, the closer you are to the dslam, the higher the bandwidth you can get. so how close do you gotta be to get 200Mbs - 2 inches?
and that would be PEETS. somehow the guys that started starbucks and peets were related, but i forget exactly how. starbux stayed up in nw, peets came down to beserkely. anyways, most people who are die-hards will tell you that you can get a much better cup at peets then starbucks. at least peets doesnt sell (as much of) the frappi-carma-whipCREAMtilyoudie shit and you have to jockey for position in line with all the kids getting wired on... SUGAR.
kiteboarding is the latest extreme water sport. you DONT need to paddle and you get to surf the waves inbound and outbound. basically a very large power kite with 100' lines pulls you on various types of boards (whether directional - like a surf board) or smaller bi-directional boards (like wake boards).
its almost illegal how much fun you can have kiteboarding, but highly dangerous if you dont take safety seriously when kiting.

i can see if a MS employee would be fired if they wrote a truthf.. err scathing report on the state of ms security. but a SECURITY COMPANY firing a consultant (whether executive of peon) because he writes an opinionated (and most likely highly accurate) report on one of the biggest offenders in the security business?
whats next? (cant think of witty analog... dammit)
if ISPs would actually rotate their DHCP pool frequently (for broadband users w/o static IPs), on a daily basis, or actually give you a DIFFERENT IP address when you request a refresh, wouldnt that effectively stop RIAA from being able to tell who is who?
at least it would make it harder. i guess they might still be able to force the ISP to some accountability (dhcp logs?), but maybe the ISP could flush those on a periodic basis...
pics or it didnt happen
I, for one, wholeheartedly welcome our sex robot overlords...
(I gotta believe someone else posted this already but didn't see it)

browsers don't kill people, criminals kill people.
if we outlaw browsers.. hows that go?
yep. same thing happened to me from my rss feed pumping into my igoogle.com page.
when there is a red light ahead. so instead of wasting peoples gas, these things would save consumers brake pads?
so you could have a field of them that pop up some distance before each light to absorb all the wasted energy that goes into brake heat.

welcome our new, non-polluting, post-quantum overlords.
is you just get stuck further off the road.
windsurfing is so 80's.

i eagerly awaited the next patch. when i downloaded it i noted that they said amongst other things that they had taken care of a number of printing issues. alas, the PDF problem still exists.
