The ability to spin 180 deg with a trackball is instant, for FPS it is awesome. However it does take a bit of getting used to, but it is better in my opinion than a mouse. Texting at a stop light may be a so-so call (maybe the light turns green and you hold people up), but using a GPS on a phone as long as it is mounted where a normal GPS would be, is just Nazi crap.

One of the problems I see, is that the management types hiring the H1B people assume they are getting people at the same skill level, but statistically, the skill level is much worse, particularly from India. There were some studies on the quality of education awhile back, so I won't go into too much detail. But many of the H1B people lie or greatly exaggerate their eduction which in many cases is not provable. The management types are just happy their payouts are less, in reality they are getting garbage products and robbing jobs from truly qualified workers that could produce a quality product. (statistically, not always). The other problem besides ignorance from the accountant types hiring the H1B's thinking they are getting a deal, is that people seem to be more and more ok with putting out crap products. The days of true quality seem to be going away. Now it is just, get it out quick and fast and cheap. Innovation is just a buzz word no one wants to pay for any longer (for many companies, there are a couple still trying to compete doing it right)

Unfortunately due to Apples extreme restrictions, similar to what Microsoft was sued for when it came to competing Browsers running on their platform, a user can not change the default browser or map app, or anything else for that matter. So users will need to copy and past addresses from their contact list continually, rather than click on a user and have the desired map come up. However this is just one of the Apple limitations that keep a user from getting the experience they want instead of being stuck with the dictated way Apple thinks it should be. Considering the stupid move by Apple to get rid of Google Maps and replace it with an obviously inferior product I can't believe people are jumping on the IOS update. I personally will be sticking with IOS5 until either Google is allowed to release a nice mapping app for IOS6, or Apple gets their act in gear and does some serious database work to fix the junk maps they released. It would have been nice to have what I hear is a semi-working SIRI in Canada, but after being sold on SIRI for the 4S and finding out later most of SIRI was not supported in Canada, I am accustomed to disappointment, lol. But as you say, most Apple users are non-technicals that just flock to the coolest fad like businessmen riding Harleys etc. I will be moving to Android as soon as my current contract is up. Apple is toast in my books after the ridiculous patent war they apparently won against Samsung; as a developer I can't support those types of cheesy patents.

I develop hardware and firmware and definitely do not support stealing designs, but from what I have seen, these Apple patents are a complete joke that should trigger patent reform if anything, not be used to destroy fair competition. In my opinion this decision will hurt consumers with a lack of competition. How many shapes can you come up with economically that allow a screen to be held in your hand, ie a Rectangle. What is the most efficient way of arranging icons on that screen, i.e. vertical and horizontally aligned, just like the short cuts on your PC OS, which also happens to be a rectangular screen. Perhaps all the PC manufacturers and Microsoft should sue Apple for infringement. I just hope Samsung can still sell in Canada, however with the U.S. sales screwed over I am sure the support for after market addons will drop in a big way.

Missing "work?" No, I've been missing a lot of meetings.

(For managerial, talking is working. For technical staff, meetings are precisely the opposite of work.)

For obvious reasons it is important to have some meetings to nail down design spec's etc. However from my experience with weekly, bi-weekly updates on progress etc. those meetings are completely unproductive and serve to set the project back further. The bizarre lack of logic from typical U.S. corporate types is that if the project falls behind a little, they immediately call for more status update meetings, which in-turn causes the project to fall behind more. It would be so cool to have a situation where non-technical management types actually trusted their work force, and had a "how can I help / what do you need" attitude. But for now, I guess having a pay check is a nice thing :-)

  17. Re:Well... on Google Seeks US Ban On iPhones, iPads, Macs · · Score: 1

I think the reason those who conscientiously object to Apple's suits but not to (most) of the other telecom suits is that lawsuits have been Apple's first line of (de|of)fense, and their stated goal is not to secure licensing. No other technology company that makes actual products does that. They sue to force licensing of their patents (whether the patent is valid is irrelevant to the point I'm making, by the way). Motorola's lawsuit is the first non-Apple-filed suit I can think of which is not designed to force licensing, and this can in no way be considered their first line move. Apple doesn't want licensing fees; they want scorched earth. They nuke first and ask questions never.

Let's face it: Apple does not produce technology. They design products using nearly 100% tech created by other companies. They excel at specifications, packaging, and marketing. They popularize new technology that other people actually invent, and then they use design patents to keeps the companies who actually developed the technology as weapons against those companies who make their existence possible.

I'm not saying other companies haven't done shitty things in the cell phone wars, but when it comes to the way lawsuits are used Apple is in a class itself.
