The biggest public concern over Nuclear Power is that both the uranium ore and the waste are radioactive. In fact, they are so radioactive that a people living next door to a Nuclear Power Plant can get almost as much radiation as if they lived next to a Coal Power Plant. That's right, Coal Power Plants emit more radiation than Nuclear Power Plants. Worse, the uranium and thorium emitted from a coal plant are gaseous, and vented to the atmosphere.
Paul Nakada, via email: "It appears that the coding muscle for Nutch is Doug Cutting, the author of Lucene, an Apache Project open source search engine. We use it here at salesforce and have a huge amount of respect for Doug's coding."
Unfortunatley for Microsoft, they allow 3rd party drivers into kernel space, even if that driver has never been seen by a Microsoft employee.
Windows gives a warning when installing a device driver that has not been certified and digitally-signed by Microsoft. If Windows refused to install devicer drivers that were not certified and digitally-signed by Microsoft, Slashdot would have a field day about Microsoft's predatory actions.
Plus, how would device driver authors develop new drivers if every test build had to be digitally-signed by Microsoft?
Seeing how 9 out of 10(litterally) high schools in my local area don't meet federal guidlines, I wouldn't trust any of their graduates to sharpen pencils at city hall.
And I am guessing that your high school did not LITTERALLY meet the federal GUIDLINES?
Is this a service offered by your state or the credit reporting agencies? Do you have to pay for this?
This is not a state service. You must contact the three (redundant) credit report agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Tell them to put an alert on your credit report requiring creditors to contact you via telephone for approval before issuing credit in your name.
This alert is free and has the nice side effect of eliminating those unwanted, pre-approved credit cards in the mail. Creditors can't mail you pre-approved credit cards if they didn't call you for permission first! Those pre-approved credit cards are easily stolen and used to buy stuff in your name with credit accounts you never even knew you had!
Also, if you tell Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion you your wallet or mail was stolen, they will give you a free copy of your credit report (once per year). They don't verify this, but they might get suspicious if your wallet is stolen every January. I get my three credit reports (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) every year to make sure my identity theft problem does not come back to haunt me. You must check all three credit reports because they contain different and often incorrect information about your credit accounts.
I don't think he is overreacting. Identity theft is much easier and more lucrative than mugging. You MUST protect yourself because law enforcement don't care or know what to do about identity theft. I should know because my identity was stolen a couple years ago.
The culprit sent the Seattle Post Office a change-of-address form on my behalf, forwarding my mail to his personal residense (in another state). I quickly changed my address back. I tried to get the Seattle Postal Inspector to investigate, but he did not care. He literally showed me the change-of-address card. He had the guy's fingerprints, handwriting, and HOME ADDRESS in his hands, but he said there was nothing he could do. He gave me his business card and sent me on my way. When I called him the next week, he replied angerly, "how the hell did you get this phone number?!" I guess he must not like his job because he is certainly not doing it well.
The culprit must have received some of my mail with my stock brokerage statements. A few weeks later he contacted my stock brokerages and told them to my new address was his home address. Thanks a LOT, Etrade and DLJ Direct! He changed my brokage address about SIX TIMES before I transfered all my funds to a new brokerage. The police in my state did NOT care. The police in his state did NOT care.
By this time, I had canceled my credit cards and put an alert on my credit reports. This saved my butt! Six months later, I get a call from Sears Credit Services asking permission to issue a credit in my name. The guy was trying to use my SSN (from my brokerage statements) to get a Sears credit card. Finally, the police were interested.
They captured the guy and he did three months in jail. This was just for credit card fraud. He did no time for inter-state mail fraud or tampering with my brokerage accounts. The police officer told me that he was surprised the guy even got three months because he was a first time offender, claimed to have a drug problem, and (to quote the police officer) "he looked like a god-damned choir boy".
Unfortunately, the story didn't end there. Six months later, I got my credit report and noticed some unpaid long-distance phone bills to his home address. I had to jump through many hoops to prove to the debt collection agency that those debts were his and not mine.
The greated irony is that this guy and I went to the same university. We share the same first and last names, but different middle names. In school, I would occassionlly receive a few of his letters in my mailbox, including checks (made out to our shared name), angry bank letters, and a break-up letter. I returned all of his mail to him, with an apology for accidentally opening his letters. He never thanked me.
Our average life span is increasing thanks to reduced infant deaths. Save a few more babies (whose age of death would HEAVILY skew the average) and your average life span jumps up.
remember that you need to upgrade other pieces as well when going from 2.4 to 2.6 - the module utilities in particular.
What is the difference between the modutils RPMs and the module-init-tools bz2 files? Arjan van de Ven's directory has modutil RPMs, but no module-init-tools. I've tried Arjan's kernel and modutil RPMs, but I only get a blank screen on boot (before the expected spew of debug traces).
maybe they don't have to be real image files on the spammer's server. Maybe forcing the spammer's server to generate 404s is adequate to slashdot it..?
Wicca was something made up by some guy about 100 years ago.
When some guys MADE UP Christianity 2000 years ago, Judiasm was already 2000 years old! What makes Christianity more valid than Wicca and not less valid than Judiasm?
The president's religion does not matter except that he considers atheists non-citizens and that God speaks to him directly, telling him to invade Iraq and end terrorism.
the U.S.'s exponentially decreasing retro gap is in danger of achieving parity with real-time historical events early in the next century, creating what leading retro experts call a "futurified recursion loop," or "retro-present warp," in the world of American pop-cultural kitsch appreciation.
Such a warp, Williams said, was never a danger in the past due to the longtime, standard two-decade-minimum retro waiting period. "However, the mid-'80s deregulation of retro under the Reagan Administration eliminated that safeguard," he explained, "leaving us to face the threat of retro-ironic appreciation being applied to present or even future events."
"We are talking about a potentially devastating crisis situation in which our society will express nostalgia for events which have yet to occur," Williams told reporters.
After oiling the hinges, wouldn't the maintenance guy immediately realize the squeak was not fixed? That should have taken him about 4 seconds to figure out, not 4 weeks.
Republicans, who pride themselves on being frugal with taxpayers' money, were bigger spenders than Democrats in state legislatures over the past five years, a USA TODAY analysis shows. State legislatures controlled by Republicans increased spending an average of 6.54% per year from 1997 to 2002, compared with 6.17% for legislatures run by Democrats. State spending rose slowest -- 6% annually -- when legislatures were split, and each party controlled one chamber. Inflation averaged 2.55% annually 1997-2002.
The best thing to do is to let them fail.
yes, someone PLEASE let Amtrak (finally) fail.

Please tell us more about the "Linux paradigm of indirect hardware access". Linux device drivers are in kernel-space, not user-space. Just like NT.

This makes sense. I bet a greater percentage of liberal arts majors and lawyers smoke than engineers or doctors. Google, where are these numbers??

sounds like someone has read Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People"!
- Great conversationalists ask questions and listen more than they speak
- People's favorite word is their name
it's worked for me.

Does that mean sex toys that take the appearance of FEMALE genitalia are a-okay?
He invaded the wrong two countries
I'm curious, which were the RIGHT two countries to invade?
yes, crack should be legal. It is harming no except the consenting user. Murder should not be legal because it harms unconsenting people.
(am I going straight to Hell now?)
Now would be an excellent time for Slashdot's "I like wide web pages" troll to make an appearance. Where are you, man?!

Which means he's legally unable to associate with any registered voter!
so he can only associate with something like 50% of the US citizenry?
the left-wingers want to make government even bigger than what these Republicans want.
That would be true, except for the fact that it is false:
