China gains in the short term by throwing off the handcuffs offered by BG. and Co.
Open-source gains down the road when China starts giving back. This may take a few years, but once open source gets a foothold in China it will be massively adopted (We are seeing this right now) but more importantly, we might be seeing the start of a common language for China.
What we get back from the Chinese via the GPL may be more than we bargained for.
And I am hoping uniting China under a Free software initiative will perhaps take on a life of its own.
Tack, I am being stupid as usual. However, I feel I am being dissed for no reason. I am willing to accept your judgement due to your excellent record. And I will agree to whatever you decide.
Don't get me wrong. I spend my time at work using a PII 350, an AMD 500 and a dual 1.2Ghz. G4. Trust me, I can spot the deference. My home unit is a custom 2.5Ghz Barton with a Gig of memory.
The Apple actually is Slower in several aspects than the older G4(800) it replaced. (It does render faster, but idiot things you take for granted now take far longer than it used to.)
And OMG does it blow heat! it uses a close to 7" square all copper heat pump type passive heat sink. This feels like a hairdryer at the power supply exhaust, I know people that are worried about leaving them on overnight, I am not kidding.
And we actually have two Pentium-Pro 200's that actually are still going and going. I did have to replace a power supply in one of them.
My point is that Apple should have open-sourced its software a long time ago.
They make their money off of hardware sales to begin with.
With the Semi-Open Hardware model it has always had (Except for the one open hardware fiasco.) Combined with open source software is a match made in heaven.
But, No they have to pull stunts like this.
Apple just carved off a tiny bit of their market share.
Very ironic that the big companys wish to deny us new open hardware and at the same time ramming DRM into legacy hardware. Ala media player 9 (Plan 9?) I would normally be a lot more concerned, however since Microsoft is set to embrace and extend this new field of DRM, I am not worried.
Go to Google and try to find a method for saving a Quicktime video stream. It can be done but you have to be persistant. Now try the same thing with Media Player... Google goes nuts showing you freeware up the wazzo to do just this very thing.
I read about the kind of crap they are trying to pull in E-Week just today, I showed it to my IT manager and he just had a fit. He swore that he would not pay SCO one red cent. (He sits on a IT board for a very large company)
I just wonder how many CTO's actually contacted SCO and wanted to hand them money. (Then again, SPAM does work, I dearly hope SCO advertises the companys names, We already know one, Microsoft)
I frankly could not believe what I was reading.
A quick comment: These creatins have bigger balls than Steve Ballmer and that is saying a lot!
I wonder if SCO had the chutzpah to send one of these letters to Microsoft.
Microsoft is most certainly in the top 1000 companys. And don't doubt they are running Linux on a few computers.
On to my questions:
1. I don't wear a tin hat but SCO is doing just about everything in its power to discredit open source and the GPL. Who is the default protector of the GPL, and why are they not sueing SCO over flagrant violations?
2. I first thought Microsoft was behind this, but at this rate, Microsoft has as much to lose as anybody if SCO somehow wins. My question is: Is SCO just trying to sling as much mud as it can and just seeing what sticks?
Their business model closely mimics the RIAA's
I doubt they will have any friends after this.
Watch Microsoft for an indicator of how the landscape must fall. (I know how you guys hate BG. But he could be a major factor in this one)
I personally think this is going to rank in the "Bob" catagory for Microsoft.
My blathering did not disclose the piviotal moment in my young life. Ever heard of the game Ooos-Toposs? I know I am making a mess of my spelling but this game was dope in my generation, You had to build a space ship from parts using a command line interface. With plenty of traps and pitfalls along the way. I demoed this on a brand new IBM [Strike that.] It was an Apple they were very ahead at that time. And they could not drag me from the machine fast enough.
Don't know where I am going with this post. Just know I want those teenagers out there to know you should thank your lucky stars to be born in the information age, and how frigging smart you are to be reading this message.
One more old fart story.
I used to connect with BBS at 300 BAUD and was proud of it until I collected a $300 phone bill, let alone the compuserve ultra-high-rate of service. Somebody will correct me, but it was on the order of $25 an hour back then.
Just wanted to let you all know, how lucky you are.
Back in the bad old days in '77 We had to program in Hex, 4K of memory was a GOOD THING, Jumped over to a college enrichment course in Senior year and HAD TO DEAL WITH PUNCHCARDS. Jumped over to electronics tech and HAD TO DEAL WITH PCBS WITH TRACES A MILE WIDE. Jumped into the Air-Force, figuring they have the cool technology. (Wrong, yes they have and still do have the best technology on earth, at this time and point they were using analog technology with digital keepers, O yes, this was (and still is) the ultimate in analog tech. I could go on and on. But you youngsters don't properly appreciate the marvels you have taken for granted.
So take that 12 mile hike through the snow, (I actually did that once) and tell me "life sucks because I am a teenager" Sorry Son, I can't hear so good in my left ear.
I have to vent my spleen here folks, bear with me a minute. I read the article and I have to say these people are worst nightmare jury that open source could imagine. I read the thread up and down, and none of you seem to understand what just happend here. This is an honest paradiem shift, and nobody in this community noticed it. It is very subtle but commands a broad range of guess what? (Crackdown) Bear with me a little more, Microsoft licensing SCO? What the heck is this all about? Man that opens up another can of worms. (Microsoft defends SCO until the death of IBM?)
The FCC relaxing ownership hold on TV Monolopies? -Pet gripe. (While ignoring the lesson of Clear-channel when radio ownership was 'relaxed'?)
I cannot tell you how many jobs that little jewel will cost all the time preserving the fat cats on top.
Thanks for listening to my spleen, my killer comment is: They are lumping open source software, Spammers, P2P and Anti-DRM people into the group known as "terrorists"
How does it feel to be labeled a Spammer.
I don't like it and you should not take it.
I am even going to go out on a limb here, and say I support Spamcop. Before the flames begin, I have not found a more effective solution for free or for money. Say what you want about server level solutions, They just dont work. Witness the debacle that AOL is going through.
Sorry for the extra mini-rant I promise the punchline is:
Write your Congress-critter, Or present me with ten thousand geeks who are willing to present a united front against a deadly foe and are willing to spend 50 bucks apiece to get a lobby group formed.
My take is that these guys are going to fall by the wayside unless the open source community stands behind them bigtime. Imagine if SCO went after this company first.
1. Used Cars. Classic black comedy, (All star cast) Spielberg produced it before he was mega-famous.
2. Shogun Assassin. 420 people being killed in a bloody fashion can't be wrong! (Vegetables being used as weapons!)
3. Tapeheads. John Cusak and Tim Robbins as wannabe music video producers. Michael Nesmith had a hand in this one.
4. Head. The Monkees only feature film, great laughs.
5. The Magic Christian. Peter Sellers at his best with Ringo Starr as his adopted son trying to corrupt everybody in sight with money. Rachel Welch also stars in a bikini wielding a whip! A MUST SEE MOVIE! (Soundtrack by the Beatles)
6. Wizards. An animated cult classic with Donald Sutherlands voice and an R rating for violence and cartoon nudity.
7. Hatari. One of John Waynes later films directed by Howard Hawks about people capturing animals in Africa for zoos. The things that stand out (besides the all star cast) are the capture sequences, (some of the most dangerous stunts ever captured on film) and in almost every scene somebody is lighting up a cigarette. Talk about anti-PC!
8. Forbidden Planet. Made in 1959 it still has some of the best special effects ever made. Plus you will weep at the loss of pure knowledge at the end.
9. Repo Man. Another very dark comedy, I still get a kick how the networks cut it up just so they can air it.
10. There is no number ten. I am torn between too many good movies such as: The princess bride, Caligula, (The XXX rated version) A clockwork orange, The boys from company C, Howard the duck, the original Rollerball, and so many others.
I only hope that these movies are preserved for future generations.
I would run the cold water into a jacket around the warm water causing condensation (which should be pretty pure water) before warming it up for the released gasses. (Perhaps killing two birds with one stone?) I'm no scientist but it seems pretty obvious to me.
This is good for China and great for open-source.
China gains in the short term by throwing off the handcuffs offered by BG. and Co.

They honestly make Microsoft look like the fairy godmother.
For you tinfoil hat types, this looks like a plan 9.
I Love Rush. I was hooked a long time ago to their cool sound. I edited a video for my buddy using a Rush/Joe Walsh soundtrack.
Normally, I Listen to Rush with my Logictec Z-560's cranked up to ten. And I love it.
This disturbing information only makes me sad.
I hope that a premaster tape was saved.
I detected this after listening to La Villa Strangito. (Sic.)
I was embarresed by the quality so I requested a borrow of a CD from a friend, and I ripped the cut at the highest possible rate and guess what?
Shitty quality from the master.
The power Trio from Canada should consider breaking free from the crappy mixers and consider hooking up with the likes of Bose.
I still love Rush, No matter what.
I in no way want to deride my idols, however this guy has a huge point.

I wish I had mod points right now.
That Plan 9 reference is exactly right on.
Sadly, most of the readers will not get this.
That line alone deserves a point.
Consider this post a ghost mod.
I laughed a lot at that bit of brilliance. It really stood out and I thank you.

BG: "No! That makes me so mad I can't believe it! Do you realize the pain..."
I don't know about you guys but that quote alone makes me want to keep propagating the legend true or not!
Buddy, I was getting cramps from the laughing.
/. but great post!
That post was soo funny, I was surfing the thread as an ac. but your post stood out so far I had to give you a public accolade.
Dead on, Funny as hell. I know this is frowned upon on

Apple has given the given the people what they wanted with this Gig. Will Apple be smart enough to capitalise on the market share?
Remains to be seen.
Semi-rare to be able to post quickly.

Just a thought.
why is it possible to fix in Win2k if Win2k is the son of NT?
Because XP is the mother of all OS'es
Guffman was not bad at all, did you see Spinal Tap?
Excellent movie.
I walked out on the remake. What a POS.
Dark Star is one of my favorites as well.
Have you seen "The thing?"

As long as I have a decent GUI rather then an obtuse CLI, I am all for it.
Actually, they will be using MySQL and then blame it on Microsoft because Bill has deep pockets.
UT splash screen: "In the year 2020 the professional gaming league was formed..."
Looks like a three year old game was way ahead of it's time.
Who could of guessed?
Considering the number of "Reality based" shows on TV these days it looks like a winner.
Hell, sign me up for a sniper session and I will be owning OSD with my winnings real soon.
You know this actually happens in South Korea.
