I think this one the smartest moves Lindows could make. They are pretty much giving away the software for free and as a result become the default operating system on any system built with this class of hard drive.
Watch experiments like this be embraced by the old school of thought, I will bet the funding flows very well to 'selected' genetic experiments such as this but not so good for genetics feeding the world for example.
I know I am going to get a 'Flamebait' Mod for this post.
(But hey, It is my one hundredth post And I will Sink my Karma If I Want To.)
Little Richard Simmons action there.
Thank you/.
I have learned so much to get to this point.
I really want to express my gratitude for the positive opinions out there.
The reason is a vast number of people are using 98, that is why they dropped support so people would be forced to upgrade. But that is going to stop Microsoft from squeezing more revenue from a "dead" operating system.
Funny, I was looking at the versions affected and I noticed a trend. Gates is so stuck on the NT code that he will throw any amount of money at it just to avoid saying he was wrong. Think about it.
The most dissapointing thing was the fact that Server 2003 was affected.
That means that 2003 code is based on the vernable NT code. No wonder hackers around the world are finding flaws in ten year old technology.
If I were designing a virus I would attach it to some critical connection bound to port 80 via scripting flaws in explorer or office.
IMHO, one or the other might save you but not both. I respect Zone Alarm, it is what I use. However, a smart virus writer can figure a payload with ZA in mind.
I would suggest monitoring your system with some other tools if you are really worried. I offer simply activating the network traffic monitor. (Or watching your DSL Tx/Rx light.) These simple tools have allowed me to catch Microsoft in a number of interesting things.
My $.02
Way too late for the people that don't patch their machines daily. I feel for those mission critical people. I really do. I feel jerked around as a mere consumer, I cannot imagine how the people at the hospitals or the DOD feel when this stuff hits.
This is no surprise. The tinfoil hat people will have a field day with this information, However, this is mostly true. I could argue bias, however it just feels like a broken record that somebody needs to nudge the needle. Just like miracle Max. I offer to solve your problems with you paying me money.
"I've had SBC DSL service for 4 years, and at least during that time SBC has not had any kind of bandwidth limitation or fee."
Same here, I balked at the Yahoo takeover/spyware? issue. But otherwise than that Rock Solid Service.
They even put up with my bitching to the abuse department! (Mostly over open relays, spam up the wazzo and cutting off newsgroups and foisting them on a new company.) At one point I was having a daily dialog with one of the Abuse folk.
Sure. they are stubborn, but I am a happy user of their services.
I have downloaded countless gigabytes for a friend that is a Grateful Dead fan. (For all of you rookies out there: The 'GD' allowed audiophile recordings of its concerts for free)
Very Anal these people be.
I am happy to present my friend a stack of cd's a week that is building up his library of music.
(At least 500 CD's at last count) (Anybody know of sources other than GDlive or the other one please let me know)
Thank you, That answers one aspect of the technology involved. But what about overlaying this thin mask(?) over a computer monitor displaying white for instance?
I know you can't quite do that just yet.
I will even go further and ask have you ever held a flashlight up to a sheet of paper from behind?
Question: Does anybody know a simple explanation of why they don't go with back lighting or even perhaps rejiggering the dyes and black lighting this?
I guess I am a CRT snob, but I remember an IBM technology demo showing 400DPI. It was loosely based on LCD technology. It was backlit. Of course it did not have the refresh rate that this sign has.
Also notice those page sized tiles in the prototype.
Looks like this technology is heading our way fast.
Losing Karma. Oh well, that is what it is for. (At least I get to sleep easy at night because I speak up for what I believe in.){=Original and not a bad sig.
Two issues with this story, one is the fact that if you indeed get the 'perfect' mold grown on your disk it is very difficult to freeze the err, data in a static way.
The number two thing is why are people researching this 'Fungus-effect' rather than say, rubbing crayons onto cds with a far more reproducable effect?
Bio-cds perhaps?
Not to mention the health hazards are also greatly reduced with crayons. Of course you will still have to deal with the issue of the foreign matter of your choice clogging up your CD drive.
Also the offbalancing in that 100x drive you picked up at costco for twenty bucks. is going to cost you a trip to the return line.
It's your hardware, please do as you wish. (Just let us know what happens) Visions of mold based prior art dance through my head sorta like the SCO executives.

The last possible shield for my slim castle of karma: I showed this article to a fellow co-worker when we were both under a very tight deadline (He moonlights as a DJ, Biggest cd collection I have ever seen. 5000+ collection)
He just started laughing and laughing. I know that is sorta creepy but it was a relief sort of laugh, not one of those ones in the very scary under-reported storys thread.
That kind of stuff is hard to refute.
I work in the Media and that thread gave me great pause.
One nice thing I really like about Slashdot is the fact that I might take a verbal tongue lashing from the literati, I don't usually get my lug nuts pried of my car because I think different. I am using a metaphor for having my car stereo ripped off a long time ago. What I learned was don't keep expensive stuff in your car. (Basic knowledge 101)
It wouldn't matter if there were. For the most part, big media is one way or another connected with RIAA members.
Sadly, you are indeed correct for the most part.
There are a few exceptions such as Hearst-Argyle. Which has no direct affiliation with the **AAs' And I thank God daily for that fact.
However, the other, darker side of the coin is the fact that TV stations are compelled to seek revenue from any commercial provider around.
What this means to you dear public, is that the media is willing to sell itself to the highest bidder. (Bad Movies, Shows devoted to Pop culture as regulated by the Almighty Neilson Ratings.)
Remember Firefly? That show deserved a chance. They put it on Friday for crissake! I am a professional TV watcher and that is normally the death nell for TV shows and to waste that show on a Friday timeslot was a travesty. That show this year could have been a contender for those morons at FOX for Smallville from WB. Firefly could have gone very far. Some clarafication is in order. Friday nights are usually when people go out or are stuck at work like me. Guess what show was the runaway hit on Fridays last year?
GA take a guess.
Reba.
Thats right! Your worst nightmares have come true!
Reba generated roughly the same Neilson numbers as Firefly and was lauded a hit at WB while Firefly was doomed a faliure at Fox while the core audience kept growing. I really liked Firefly, I know of several authors and producers that felt the same way. I think it was one of saddest days in television when it was pulled. I am very glad that the DVD is coming out and a possible movie deal is being struck.
I will go even farther and say somebody spending his money wisely can influence your thinking for a given issue with a modest outlay. (Car dealers do it all of the time.)
(That ought to bring out the Tin Foil folk even though it is true)
The EFF did not have time in this case to do anything.
This was brought to wordwide attention and settled in one day.
This is light-speed in the halls of justice.
What you are seeing is a mini kangaroo court floating out there run by the **AAs' legal departments. (With the Government rubber stamping subpoenas right and left expect a lot more.)
If this case had come up before a judge. There would have been hell to pay.
This RFID thing is a dead horse. Shoot it and get over it. Until large companies start getting the idea that most people prefer control over their privacy, these sorts of technology will be regulated to the military and the police.
And boy, will they embrace it bigtime.
And looking at the other side of the coin, how long before somebody creates a RFID zapper gun?
Sorry, Man. I would have modded you up but I felt the need to post.
First off, I am not ragging on the Linux users.
Secondly, Why are not more/. Windows users using shareware such as Download Mage to allow multiple threads and resume functionality?
Thirdly, Using said software I managed to procure the trailer in normal DSL times. I have to say it looks pretty cool, but I am not going whip myself into a frenzy like I did for the second movie.
Finally, There is way too much bitching about downloading in this thread. Downloading is a good thing.
Consider millions upon millions of people being allowed to touch computers for the very first time. I sure as heck know it changed my life. That was a long time ago back in the dark Dos days. I cannot imagine a neater thing than to ingnite a culture long repressed with an information free culture fueled by the desire to speak a common language.
This is open sourced softwares wet dream.
I am suprised you Uber-Geeks are having a hard time getting it.
Ironically, the very best way to get them to buy our goods is to flood them with as many trash titles as the black market can bear. Once the technical venues are worked out, Then you start offering the good stuff at a price. (Look at HDTV marketing if you want a poor example) Or the Scum sucking RIAA for an even worse example.
The only problem with this model is that taste varies widely between the east and the west.
Don't underestimate China.

Not a bad idea at all.
This is going to put Linux on a lot of desktops.
