This simply isn't true. There is eDirectory and it's better! Wake up people! It's 2005 and there is a better option out there and to top it all off they are a Linux company too.
NDS and its superiority has nothing to do with it being 2005. It was superiour in 1999... oh, wait, there wasn't even an ADS yet in '99, that's right. But IIRC Novell was on version 8 of NDS. At that point they were just starting to branch out into the cross platform territory instead of being windows centric for clients and Novell centric for servers. ADS, however, is still a windows only solution (for officially supported purposes) and isn't likely to change in the near future.
So because of a price break on OS and MS Office management decided to move 52 million user objects and change the backbone of the distributed network? For a large corporation, what you save on the "price break" for those 50000 employers is negligent compared to what the total cost of the project, long term and short term.
You obviously haven't worked with the management I have. Most decisions seem to be made based around golf buddy opinions rather than technical superiority.
In PayPal's defense, there are a lot of people out there running scams claiming to be raising money to help the hurricane victims. After raising substantial amounts of money, they keep it rather than donate it. Unfortunately, things like that happen anytime there is a need. Something Awful may very well be one of the excpetions, but how is PayPal supposed to know that. I'm guessing based on his comments that he most likely was fully intending to give the money to the Red Cross while rewarding those who donated with free stuff he already had sitting around. It's unfortunate, but I can certainly understand why the account would be flagged as suspicious and shut down.
And this crap about the feature only being valid when exposed to a wide audience? So the OS don't work if Microsoft doesn't sell 200 million copies? WTF?
Now there's a scary thought... maybe Microsoft will refuse to activate anybody's copy if they don't sell at least 200 million copies. I mean it's bad enough that you have to ask MS for permission to use the software you paid for, but what would you do if they said 'no'?
It does nothing to prove that you actually have a security clearance. Nor does it prove that you know how to secure a computer to DoD specs. Speaking personally, I'm in the military and hold a security clearance. I've even used a "secret" computer system, but I don't have a clue what the DoD specs for secure computers are.
Let me just throw in my own "me too" that this is a bad idea. A classified machine is a classified machine. It's not just the data. Heck, the way I understand it, by the strictest interpitation, even the room has to be classified if you will be discussing classified information. I could be wrong about that one, but it's what I've heard in dicussions with other clearance holders (we were at a secure facility:).
You can use USB keys in a classified machine; however, as soon as the media is inserted into the machine, it too becomes classified. Also, networks are possible, but they have to be classified networks. You can't just hook up to the company LAN.
I hold a security clearance, but I've only been through one breifing regarding classified computers.
The way I understand it from their FAQ, not at this time. But they intend to fully document the protocol so thrid party developers can add it to their clients.
Negative. The corporation doesn't even own every single store. They license the brand out to local owners. I know, I used to work for McDonald's. The particular one I worked for was owned by Pheonix Enterprises out of North Muskegon, Michigan. He was one of two local Muskegon area McDonald's franchise owners.
Quick question for you, mark_laybarger.... where are you getting your information? I ask this because I'm sitting inside the prison facility that is Abu Ghraib (notice the correct spelling) and only some of what you say is even close to the truth.
americans are still dying every day in that prision (which is controled by the americans). american troops are deployed in and around that prision sometimes for months at a time with no productive mission other than to be deployed so a general or such can get another stripe on their shirt. this is what our tax dollars are being used for.
First, the nit-picky part. I believe you meant to say "so a general or such can get another star on their shirt" as Generals in the Army (or any US branch, for that matter) don't wear stripes but instead wear stars. You see, stripes are worn by the enilisted soldiers that actually do the real work yet don't get anywhere near officer's pay.
Now for the meat of that paragraph. American's die every day in this prison? Wow... I wasn't aware of that. In fact, I'm only aware of 2 fatailies since I've got here in March (one Marine in April and one civilian recently). We have had some injuries... one even really serious, but that's it as far as American causulaties at his prison.
there's units that have their own cooks but can't use them due to contracts with another food supply "company". what are these cooks doing? not a damn thing. there's people who are budgeted for a years deployment, but have replacements aready there. what happens to these troops? they get re-deployed to another closer area. these aren't the full time troops either, these are the reservists who are being forced to sit on their arse in the desert.
Amazingly enough, the first part of this paragraph I actually agree with. I think it's absurd that the government pays KBR 10 times (possibly exagerated, probably not) what they'd pay a soldier who's already trained to do a job. Our company alone brought numerous cooks, but we still have civilians doing all the cooking. That's not to say that cooks are doing nothing. Some are in "supervisor" postions inside these civilian run DEFACs and others have been given other tasks to do that don't relate to cooking but still need to be done.
And about being re-deployed to another closer area because your replacements are there but you're still budgeted for deployment. BS. I will not give specific numbers as those are, quite frankly, none of your buisness, but I can tell you that the majority of soldiers who got here in February '04 are still here. Some have been sent south to a prison faclity near the Kuwait border and some have gone home (either individuals for individual reasons or a few that had neared their "2 years in 5" deployment mark. Oh, and the nit-picky point here: "re-deployment" is the Army term for going back to the states. I know, it doesn't make much sense, but that's the way it is.
by the way, there's policy in abu-grabib now that photos MUST have faces digitally distorted. meaning if a solder takes a photo of someone who's leg has been blown off, make sure there's no face in the picture. i'm not even sure if they're aloud to send photos out w/o permission these days.
Believe it or not, this is not some policy they pulled out of thing air. To the best of my knowledge, the Geneva Convention prohibts taking pictures of Prisoners of War or Civilian Detainees with their faces visible as a personal momento. That seems logical to you, doesn't it? And for what it's worth, I can send pictures home without asking first.
But what do I know... it's not like I'm in a potion to know a single thing about Abu Ghraib prison.
I am guessing that Meijer stores will no longer be selling x-box related materials.
When I saw the headline I thought the same thing... but when I saw who was implicated it struck me as quite unlikely. While Meijer is only big in a few states, it is absolutley huge in those states. From what I understand, Micrsoft is far from considering itself the winner in the game console wars which means they can't afford to not have the X-Box on the shelf at Meijer... especially as the Christmas holiday season approaches and the "unwashed masses" will be out there buying video game systems w/out knowing the difference between a controller and a game.
Yeah, but Meijer is only in a few states. Ohio's Meijer's aren't quite as big as our newer Wal-Mart SuperCenters.
Don't kid yourself. Why do you think that Walmart started doing SuperCenters? Meijer's market may just be focused in a few stats, but they are huge there. The more Walmart tried to break into that market the more they realized they needed to at least be on par with Meijer's "One Stop Shopping." Where I live (which, admitidly, is one about 20 miles from Meijer's Grand Rapid corp. office) Meijer and Super Walmart are about the same size... but there's 3 Meijer stores about a 15 mile radius and one Walmart.
It looks to me to be more that the Univerisy simply wants to be able to keep using the Fedora name whereas RedHat wants to claim ownership of it and prevent anybody else from using it.
Yep. It really sucks, but I'm one of those who has turned off the comment feature of my blog software:(. The signal to noise ratio was just too obsurd.
Tired of swinging your axe? Try doing something different for a while. Become an entertainer and chill in the Cantina. Try being a medic and healing people in the med center. Join a guild and have some various types of fun with them. Join a faction and try some of the faction based content. Do one of those Multi-legged quests for a bit of a story (there's one that starts in almost every cantina (I think)).
None of those things fit with the character you're trying to make? Create a new character on a different server... one that does something completely different. Then if you get bored swing your axe with that character, just/logout and go play the other character for a while. I have 3 characters not counting my Test Center character and am almost never bored. And I'm somewhere in between the powergamer and casual gamer (I try to play every night for a little bit, but don't always succeed).
Most of all, stop worrying about being a l33t Master whatever. When you get there, you get there. If you're only goal is to get Master whatever, than once you obtain it you'll be even more bored than you are now.
So are you saying that Galaxies is actually a great game well worth the financial/time investment despite what most everyone else is saying?
He may not be, but I am. I have loads of fun playing this game and find that I spend much more time in it than I should. In fact, I can't wait to get home so I can spend even more time playing instead of doing other things I should be doing.
Seriously, if you just enjoy the game and quit worrying about being "l33t" immediately, the game gets much funner. I've found that joining a PA is a great way to enjoy the game as it gives you other people to "hang out" with. There is fun content in the game, but in the end it's mostly the people that make the game enjoyable.
The funny thing is, it was a review on slashdot that first got me to try the game. If I had only read the stuff that I've seen posted here since that review, I probably never would have tried SWG and would be missing out on a lot of fun.
I hope congress and the FCC see Viacom's threat to halt HDTV broadcast for what it is: an attempt to ursurp the governement's power.
If Congress and the FCC doesn't see through this it will probably end up in the Supreme Court. And that could be a good thing. In 1984 the Court ruled that recording a TV show for future viewing was protected under copyright law as fair use (Sony Corp. v Universal Studios).
Ummm... what? Do you watch the SWG forums at all? They have stated that they do ban anybody that is caught using exploits. Their stance, however, is that they do not want to ban somebody who inadvertantly uses an exploit and sometimes it's difficult to tell. They also state that it's their policy not to plublisize these bans and to handle it on a case-by-case basis. They said that typically when a person is caught using an exploit, they give that person a phone call and give them to opprotunity to either come clean or be banned. As of when they said this, every person they had called chose to be banned.
So it's true, they haven't done a mass let's-ban-400,000-accounts party, but they do ban accounts.
And it also might be wise to insert your own non-crucial spelling error. Just make sure it's nothing too obvious and don't do it too often (you probably won't get marked down from one well placed spelling mistake, but if everything is misspelled it looks really bad).
The truth is, often times it's more work to copy somebody else's work and try to make it look like your own than to just do it yourself in the first place. Try it sometime; not only do you get the satisfaction of actually doing something on your own, but you might actually learn something, too (though I admit, there are some classes where you won't).
Wow, did you actually write this entire thing as a responce to this tread in this story? Even though it's offtopic for the actual story, it is an extreamly well written piece providing information in a nearly unbiased manor and is certainly on topic for this particular thread.

No wonder my employer loves me so much... I'm about 15k below the mean annual for my job/area!
Highly useful, but not very intuitive...
;)
Which is kinda the point of this story

Having a .mil address only proves one of two things:
1. The person is in the military
2. The person knows somebody in the military
