The sequel will continue the story of the Atreides family and recount the fall of Paul's empire, with the future resting in the hands of Paul's heirs, his twin children." And I just finished the first book. Thanks for spoiling it:-)
Er... D3D != DirectX.
Baldur's Gate 2 (and other OpenGL games) still use DirectX for such *unimportant" things as sound, input, and sometimes networking. People seem to forget that sometimes... ~~~~~~~~~~
The Internet runs Unix.
Unfortunately, 99% of the people using it don't.
The *real* money is in Unix. Unless you are familiar with the POSIX standards and have a good knowledge of several implementations, you are doomed to a lifetime of unemployment, recriminations and boring stories about "when I was a fuckwit, Visual Basic programmers used to get *paid*".
Um....you seem to be saying that unlesss you are a Unix guy, you suck, and you will never have a decent job. There's this little thing called Java; perhaps you heard of it? As you yourself said, it's not about operating systems. Just because someone doesn't like/know/use Unix doesn't make them less "31337", and it certainly doesn't mean that they can't get a good job.
Way to make pointless statements that insult a lot of people.
I can see it now...
"No, I didn't hang up, it was a core dump"
or
"Sorry, I would have called sooner, but I had to recompile my phone's kernel to support cigarette lighter adapters"
Are you sure?

[2.1.10]: Game Engine
Valve originally licensed the source for Quake from id Software and they began working on that code around October of 1996. Between that time and the time they finished Half-Life in October of 1998, they modified/removed/created something like 70% of the code
Also, HL exhibits certain graphical anomalies found in Quake 1, but not 2 (i.e. running a timerefresh in HL or Q1 on my TNT2 produces some strange flickery, distorted graphics, but not in Q2).
I thought one of the points of the whole anti-trust thing was that Microsoft was giving away software like IE (as opposed to selling it)...and now people are complaining that their prices are too high? Make up your minds, people.
...of all the other High-Tech IPO's, where the company's stock price soars despite the fact that they have never made a buck. Think that'll happen to Transmeta? Only time will tell...
I seriously doubt it will be open source...which means that Microsoft's "Linux" software will actually be x86 Linux software. Once again, everyone else gets screwed.
Will it be a super-stripped-down version of linux, like M$'s Win2k for XBox? Or will it be a full-featured, "normal' distribution? I think they both have their advantages.....for a stripped version, you have no boot time. But for a real version, you have, well, coolness.
That people complain about how bad DOS is, and how bad all M$ software with DOS based roots is(i.e. Win3.1/9x/ME), but when access to DOS is removed, they still complain. Go figure.
Sure, they *say* they did this.... how do we know they didn't just glue together a bunch of bones from some other dinosaurs (or humans, for that matter)?? Think about it...
I have to agree with ya, Linux does suck running games. In linux, i can run Q2 at about 25 frames, at 640x480......and in win98, i get ~120 frames at 640 (TNT2).

Incidentally, it was originally called Reality Lab, and they bought it from a company called RenderMorphics.

Half-life is based on the Quake 1 engine....

More competition can only be a good thing for Linux users (and Windows users, when they eventually realize the error of their ways :-)

NASM is a great tool, especially for all the DJGPP users out there who want to use Intel syntax ASM.

To each his own.... I run Mandrake 7.0 + XF86 4.0.... on my P2-300 w/ 128 megs, Win2k runs better.
I have 4 free PCI slots............
