I get so tired of this close minded reasoning. If Windows was not installed by the OEM's and if all computers were sold without an OS you can say the exact same thing for all Windows flavours.

My personal experience is, that I found Linux very easy to install and had no problems with driver issues. After supplying a password it was connected to the net via my pocket wifi. I am not some whizz-bang nerd kid, I'm an old grandfather.

I found connecting XP laptop to the wifi a real problem, I gave up.

I think there are a lot out here like you. In my case, I enjoyed using Microsoft products until I bought a Vista laptop, it looked great but ran very slowly. Then I had to jump through activation hoops to install XP on the laptop which improved the laptop greatly although it didn't look as nice as Vista did. A few years ago my son and grandkids visited and he said "You have to try Linux Dad, it's made me interested in computers again." I have been using it since not giving Microsoft another thought until I read about this secure boot nonsense which I believe is to force people to use only their product and not the OS we choose. With the Vista experience and knowing I have no choice but to buy a Windows machine to replace this one with a locked down BIOS was the last straw. I no longer wish to be a Microsoft customer. Thankfully my son said he can build me a computer without that nonsense and with the OS I like.

Does this mean that every scale in the world (excluding those "morons" that still use imperial measurement - America, UK, etc) will need to be recalibrated? Then again I doubt any of the scales at butchers or green grocers have ever been calibrated.

Though take the word Kilogram, gram is the base unit, so why not work on that? My guess is that it is probably too small and not impressive enough to look at.

    From the page:

You paid good money for your CDs, and you expect to be able to play them anywhere, or transfer them to your iPod - or whatever cool gadget comes out next year. However, if the American music companies get their way, such transfers will be illegal. That's right: you won't be able to play your CDs on your music player!
    What's going on here?

The Australia-US Free Trade Agreement requires new laws which prevent "circumvention of technological protection measures". Some companies want the government to go further and ban any access that the copyright owner doesn't allow. This means the music companies can decide how, when and where you listen to your music. Worse still, this law would apply to more than just CDs: games, software and movies are all included under the "technological" umbrella.

Will the record companies give you the choice? For their perspective, we quote Tommi Kyyrä, of IFPI Finland:

"Now, we need to understand that listening to music on your computer is an extra privilege. Normally people listen to music on their car or through their home stereos," said Kyyrä. "If you are a Linux or Mac user, you should consider purchasing a regular CD player."

    But I'm no criminal!

Exactly! However, if the Australian Government caves in, you will be breaking the law by transferring songs from any "copy protected" CD you own. Instead, we want the law aimed clearly at piracy, by only banning things which actually infringe copyright.
    Act now!

Tell the Government that you want control of your music, now and in the future. Linux Australia has made this easy by preparing a petition (PDF, 470kb) that you can download. By getting as many signatures on the petition as you can, and posting it to the address below you'll be helping ensure that consumers have rights over digital content.

Follow these 3 easy steps to make your voice heard:

          1. Download and print the petition.

April this year while sitting out the back about 2am writing an email to my sister the wind blew the bamboo sunblind tipping a freshly made cup of tea over my Toshiba laptop. I screamed in terror snatching up the laptop and holding it upside down as tea ran over my arm and on my feet, I hit the power off button and headed to the kitchen dripping tea all over the floor, my mind was numb with fear from the prospect of losing my precious NEW laptop. I removed the keyboard and ran it under the cold water tap till only water was coming off it, then left it on the sink to drain, to my surprise I could only find a little stain on the metal under the keyboard and a few drops on the battery. After the keyboard was as dry I re-installed it and tried to boot the system. It booted up fine but the battery was just about flat because I was using it out back for two hours, when I plugged in the power to charge the battery the led lights blinked and the system just died, with tears in my eyes I tried again with the same result, 12 hours later I tried again and except for the touchpad buttons being sticky (isopropyl alcohol freed them up) it has worked perfectly since.
