Jesus christ people, grow up. If you are so concerned about it, use the time you spend here bitching about it to go get some adblocking software. I'm sick of seeing 30% of the posts in any ZDNet story titled "WE JUST GAVE THEM #@*)&!#@)(*!@ BANNER VIEWS OH NO THE SKY IS FALLING."

I don't know why Slashdot refused the submission yesterday, but I suppose they have their reasons. Please forward the following information everywhere you can that you think it may generate interest, and my karma and I apologize for going offtopic in this thread.

NYLUG, NOVALUG, & DCLUG to Protest the DMCA in Washington DC on May 2, 2000

On May 2nd, NYLUG.org teams up with The Washington DC Linux Users Group and The Northern Virginia Linux Users Group to stage a peaceful protest on the steps of the US Capitol Building. Updates of our plans will be posted to the nylug.org mailing lists. If you want to demonstrate, please send email to jim@valinux.com. Please include the phrase "I WANT TO DEMONSTRATE IN DC" in the subject line.

However, Slashdot posted about the OTHER protest like maybe 48 hours before it happened. One of the reasons for the extremely low turnout is no one knew - tons of comments were like "I would have gone if I had known earlier..".. which is why I went offtopic and posted it in the first thread I saw this morning instead of waiting for the next DMCA story, whenever that would be.

So.. :\ You would think Slashdot would post this one, and post it as early as possible, to get the word out and allow people to make arrangements to get down to DC.

Mail appears to be able to handle multiple pop3 boxes finally. I would test this, but when I'm flipping through help searching for information on some new features, it takes over my current browser window in which I'm writing my Slashdot post.

I HATE THAT. Help should be built into the application, it should not require visiting a web page - and if it does, let it spawn a NEW window, not take over my current one, which I couldn't go back to by hitting the back button for some reason. Macromedia is guilty of this as well.. first place I saw do it. :\

  13. DC Job Market.. on The IT Labor Shortage · · Score: 1

Has something happened in the past month or so? I most recently looked for a job in December.. after about a month, I found a job I was thrilled to do, and jumped at it.

All quiet for a month and a half.. then suddenly I'm getting 3-4 voice mails a -day- from recruiters. It's still continuing.. what's going on? My resume is hardly that stacked either.. It's not like I'm an MCSE or have -any- certifications.. couple years doing support, 1 year webmaster/sysadmin.. so there's plenty of people out there more desireable/more marketable than me, yet the recruiters are beating down my door. So if you're having trouble finding work, come to DC. Just don't drive. Our roads are filled enough as is.

I'm not going to leave where I am, even for more $. There's something to be said for a job where you actually don't mind going to work in the morning, and even sometimes enjoy it, and the people. Learning quite a few sysadmin skills at a small company that I likely wouldn't get the chance to learn somewhere larger.. things like this are worth more than $ in some cases. To me at least, YMMV.

Oh, and if you do come to DC, please stay to the right on the metro escalators if you aren't walking. Thanks.
