XP *looked* different. As far as functionality was concerned, very little changed between 98, 2000, and XP.
Um...no. Very little real basic functionality changed from 2000 to XP. But 98 was a different beast. 98 was, in fact, still built precariously on top of a DOS substrate, very different from the NT-based 2000 and XP. The step up from 98 was a change in the basic underpinnings of the OS.
when the setup (eg 10 year old browser on dialup) is so outdated, it becomes functionally identical to broken.
If it does what you need it to do, at a reasonable cost, then it's not broken, no matter how old it is. "Broken" is *not* a direct inevitable consequence of age, although age can cause things to break. In the article, the browser apparently loaded the sites he wanted to go to, and, of course, it was free, so cost wasn't an issue. That's not broken.
Yep, ya got me; I haven't kept up with top-of-line Intel video hardware. Intel's latest and greatest, the i965 family, introduced a something over a year ago, finally does have hardware TnL. Hey, it's only about ten years late. And it doesn't vectorize it, which nicely cripples the unit. But it's a step forward.
No, I'm pretty sure he was referring to the line that looks like this one: 32 MB 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or above.
Hardware Transform and Lighting is the big one, really; a lot of games require it, including some pretty old ones (Final Fantasy XI won't run without it, for example), and Intel vid chipsets just don't support it, none of them.
Nope, sorry. Gandhi did an amazing job of forcing the British to hand over the reins of the Indian government to the Indians...but he didn't make the Indian government give up any powers. The government retained all the powers it had under British rule and even added some more.
So the upshot here is, "the original bidder was an idiot for not putting in the top price he was willing to pay to begin with." If he'd put his bid limit at $240k, E-bay would have automatically raised his bid when the bid came in for $200k. If somebody had sniped him above $240k, well, that's more than he was willing to spend. As far as I can see, people who complain about sniping are people who a) don't understand how to bid on E-Bay and b) let their emotions get in front of the judgment and decide that the most important thing is that they don't "lose" the auction.
No, Linus's position here is perfectly consistent. ndiswrapper itself can be covered by the GPL, but when you use ndiswrapper, your kernel is no longer GPLONLY, even though ndiswrapper is itself GPL, because ndiswrapper then loads and runs the Windows driver which is *not* GPL. The fact that ndiswrapper loads and runs non-GPL code doesn't make it non-GPL, but it certainly makes the kernel in which it is running not GPLONLY. If ndiswrapper loaded a GPL driver, the kernel would still be GPLONLY (which, in fact, it wouldn't be if ndiswrapper was not GPL). It's just that ndiswrapper's basic purpose means it'll never load a GPL driver.
Ummmm...you do know that many states do NOT require you to be registered with a party to vote in its primaries, right? The only requirement in such "open primary" states is that you can only vote in one primary.
That turns out to have been a toaster^WCylon pretending to be human to provide an excuse for the attack (a time honored tradition in military history).
Did you know that the German invasion of Poland in WWII was provoked by a wanton Polish attack on a German radio station?
Except, of course, that it was a manufactured excuse. The Germans dressed up some convicts in Polish uniforms and forced them to attack the installation.
Hey, you're beautiful Don't ever change You know what I mean My girl will call your girl We'll talk, we'll do lunch Or leave a message on my machine So baby, won't you sign On the dotted line I'm gonna make your dreams come true The check's in the mail Would I lie to you

Ah, so a government-created monopoly is an example of evils of the free market, not an example of problems with socialism. I see.
We're arguing that some folks' lawyers will argue that. And yes, I believe that somebody will bring a lawsuit on that basis.
Got it from Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.

So, in other words, you need "location, location, location" for your "developers, developers, developers".
4. ???
5. Profit!

But first you have to assume the approved package-delivery submission position!
Can he get to Mars in six months? You need somebody who's got a terminal illness but will survive long enough to get there--bit tricky, that.
Why? He's not gonna be home for breakfast...
Surely that makes him *more* African-American, since he's only one generation removed from Africa.

Uh, there's a standard definition of African-American? Care to enlighten us as to what it is, and why Obama doesn't qualify?

Free seems pretty reasonable to me.

If it's a 4:3 screen, then the OLPC is giving you almost 15% more screen.
That's not so trivial.
Your math is off. 99.999% is five minutes a year. 99.99999% is *3 seconds* a year.
Yeah, but that means another of the particles will look like Racquel Welch. Rawr.
I thought that was "anomalous materials".
