Maybe huminoid form, but mimicing the advanced mechanical system that comprises your soft and flabby body is quite a challenge in and of itself. It can, and has been done in the past 10-20 years; but it is not a trivial task to create a machine that has similar mass, strength, and durability properties as the average [or beyond average] human body.

Just ask any engineer in robotics.

I've had a nice DEC Ultra 2000 for a few years, and it's held up to all sorts of abuses. Currently, I usually carry about a Dell Inspiron.

In practice, I can stack three large upper division mechanical engineering related textbooks on this thing and carry it around for 14 hours a day. This system is only a year old, and has minimal damage. The corner with the fan outlet is mashed in a bit, and there is one small stress fracture on the top of the display back. Other than that, you should expect an average system to hold up to two years of general usage. One thing you'll almost always have to deal with is the damn rubber feet coming off all the time. I don't expect my system to stay put on a desk anymore, and I haven't been able to find an adhesive powerful enough to keep those stupid things attached.

If you're really paranoid, find a big aluminum breifcase to carry your system in. You can find them for under $50 on E-bay if you have the time to waste.

From an engineering perspective (as in IAAES), I'd say that it makes sense to cut initial costs by designing the thing for a short lifespan. If it only needs to be in orbit for ten years, then why bother over-engineering it for more? The costs would go through the roof. Maintaining anything in space after that term is expensive enough on it's own. It's a better idea to build another one and send it up after a set time.

3.5 tons of material isn't much anyways, it will come back to Earth. Big deal. We could only hope that it would land in the backyard of a certain resident of Holland, MI.

Yup. I'll stick with my internal combustion engine, thank you very much. My 1976 Dodge Ram burns ethanol, methanol and gasoline very happily with only minor adjustments between fuel types.

Right there is a good example of clean, efficient transportation. Until chemical/energy storage becomes more efficient, a clean IC engine is the way to go. Bonus points for multi-fuel.

On a similar note, I have a 1974 Dodge Dart with a 383. With no catalytic converter, and no emissions equipment whatsoever, it passed the IM inspection with better marks than my wife's poorly tuned toyota tercel.

We got rid of the tercel for obvious reasons, as rebuilding that would have been a mess. Smaller isn't better. Clean running is.

I never said that they 'make' hydrogen. It's painfully obvious that they store hydrogen. And they have the potential to store a hell of a lot more chemical energy than cells that produce electricity.

Keeping pure hydrogen around is bulky and dangerous, that's why it's a much better idea to store hydrogen in a compound and regain it later. The trick is storing it in a compoud which doesn't require much energy to break down; compared to the energy produced by combining hydrogen with oxygen.

It looks like it has a license plate, but that thing shouldn't be street legal. Especially considering how unsafe such a tiny vehicle would be on the highway.

Three wheels shouldn't be legal on any highway, nor two for that matter. I can completely understand why Mr. Bean is always smashing up that three wheeled monstrosity. This isn't "welcome to the 21st century", this is a step backward to the 1890's. Pure hydrogen gleaned from fuel cells is the future of electric personal locomotion, not antiquidated chemical/electric storage systems.

Dual alternators and other accessories further drag this thing down. Plus, I speak from experience when I state that a 5.7 L chevy, old or new isn't the best for moving something heavy when you want to keep up with the 75MPH speed limit on a moderate hill.

This thing is good for off-road trips. Excess power under the hood in that situation wastes fuel, which is obviously a bad thing. With a highway monster, a good 454 suits me just fine.. and if I don't mind stopping to pick up $50 of gasoline every 2-300 miles or so, I can climb hills at about 75+ MPH.

They confinscated my equipment, removed all references of SOS on posters, sites, etc. Plus removed all evidence that I had ever done anything for student government. They instructed all staff in ASUU to call the police if they saw me there.

My wife was expelled from the University of Utah, and now attends school elsewhere. Any mention of the U around her usually brings cursing and condemnation out of her mouth. I was suspended for a period of one year, but I was able to give a big sob story, and was reinstated on strict probation just before fall semester started.

I generally must stay out of computer labs on campus. I was officially banned from all labs on campus for some time, but that has been rescinded for a couple labs. I cannot volunteer for anything, and my graduation has been pushed back one year.

ASUU Student Opinion Survey is gone for good. I can't get a group anywhere near campus to touch the project with a ten foot pole. A few people see me around, but even some of my closest friends from a scant year ago, today refuse even simple eye contact with me.

I lost both of my jobs thanks to the fiasco which ensued, and it took me six months to finally get hired for a workstudy job. I had to convince tens of people that I wasn't going to crack into their computers if they hired me.
