    Don't ask Apple, ask Motorola.

  22. Re:Are you sure? on NeXT Lives -- In Apple · · Score: 1

From CNET News.com a few days ago:

    *snip*

CNET takes every chance they get to dump on Apple, yet Apple never quite dies.

Anyway, I doubt they would sell a PowerBook that loses money. If they did the more they sell the more money they lose! The guy quoted has no idea how they make money at that price, but they do. One lesson I've learned is don't complain if you're making money.

Notice I grouped Transmeta/AMD/Intel together. I meant them as a group. Transmeta is doing great things with mobile chip design, AMD is now working with them. Intel will be releasing their cobbled chip to compete.

Meanwhile, yes Apple has just now started shipping faster mobile processors. How long until they are way behind again? They have never been able to keep up. I believe that platform has been at 500Mhz for the entire year of 2000.

So Transmeta/AMD/Intel are working on mobile designs, but Apple, who is already shipping faster mobile processors, is behind?

Don't get me wrong, Transmeta has done some really cool things, but their chips not exactly fast. AMD makes some greats chips for price/performance, but they have to sacrifice in size, heat, and power consumption. Intel is the only x86 portable option right now.

As for MHz, it is true that Apple has been stuck for quite some time and a 500 MHz G4 will not beat an AMD 1.2 GHz. However, instructions per cycle matter. Saying Apple is still stuck at 500 MHz when a 500 MHz G4 might equal a 700 MHz PIII doesn't make any sense. (700 is just arbitrary, I'm not sure what the number would actually be.) Especially in the portable market where a PIII is not as fast as it's desktop counterpart. And, PowerBooks are aggresively priced too!

Yeah, me and 95% of all other computer users. And that's exactly the problem Apple has faced! Duh!

Yeah, we've all heard this before. If Apple wanted they could make their computers free and get 100% marketshare! Why not? They'd make no money! Would you rather sell 100 units at $50 each or 120 units at $40 each? Apple's job is to maximize profits, not undercut PC manufacturers. More marketshare means more sales, but not necessarily higher profits.

  23. Re:Errr, I think you have it backwards! on NeXT Lives -- In Apple · · Score: 1

Apple's going down the drain, no one wants their pricey hardware except the Mac faithful. Their biggest hurrah in the past 10 years was the iMac, which actually was getting people moving from Windows to Mac more than anything else I've seen from them. That has seemingly subsided, probably because Apple is not keeping up with the speed of AMD/Intel, or the mobility of Transmeta/AMD/Intel.

That's silly. In the portable market Intel uses dumbed-down chips so they don't eat as much power. AMD doesn't even have a portable chip. Apple uses a full-power G4 in the new Titanium PowerBooks.

As for higher prices, don't buy one. x86 computer/parts manufacturers are a commodity. One single seller has no control over the price, they are price takers. Apple has a monopoly on the Mac side. That means they can charge the optimum price to maximize profits. Why should they lower prices to increase market share when chances are they'll make more money selling less hardware at higher prices? Apple is a price setter.

It is somewhat true that Apple has to compete with PCs, but not like PC manufacturers have to compete with each other.
