The thing is is that most long time computer users know that they should never use the x.0 version of anything. They should wait until at least x.1 or x.2. The x.0 versions are only for the living on the bleeding edge early adopters.
I do remember seeing adds from the late 70s or early 80s for computers with 65K of RAM. My impression then was that it was written by some marketing person and anyone who knew anything about computers would see right through it. The practice did die out fairly quickly.
Well, it's like people believe that computers run on magic and that the normal rules of physics don't apply to them.
Well, perhaps the thing to do is to convince people that it is such dangerous, powerful magic that if they do things wrong, a demon could come and eat their soul.
Except that the Bible says nothing about birth control. It does say a few things about avoiding adultery and not having sex with your sibling. In fact Paul even says that husbands and wives should not withhold sex from each other (I Cor 7:5). The reason given is avoiding temptation (presumably for adultery), not procreation.
TECO (Text Editor and COrrector - is it pathetic that I still remember this?) is probably related to Masonry. A group with many secrets, including the secret handshake.
Anyone remember Dante's Divine Comedy? It was written in the early 1300s. In it, he had some past popes condemned to hell. They were also expecting the current pope to arrive soon.
If that isn't insulting the pope, I don't know what is. And this was back in the day when the pope had much more authority than now.
His (Dante's) exile from Florence was due to belonging to the wrong political party and not due to his religious beliefs.
I'd say perl since they're going to end up cranking out garbage code anyway once they get hired. They may as well get used to the world's first "write only" programming language.
I'm not sure why you'd think going to Apple would be any better. You get the exact same business tactics, just a slightly more stylish computer.
I keep hearing this, but I don't think that it's true. Apple and Microsoft have very different personalities and goals (beyond making money). This is not to say that Apple is good and Microsoft is evil, but that there are many more kinds of evil than Microsoft demonstrates.
I don't care where it comes from. I think that this is cool. Years ago, I had a PDP-11/10 and a DECSystem 350. Unfortunately, they got lost in a move. I still miss them.:-(
The flag is a symbol. You don't show your patriotism by planting as many flags around you as possible. You show it by standing up for the ideals that the flag represents - free speech, free religion, free press, equality, etc.
I think that this is the key here. It is much easier to wave a flag around and say, "Hey everyone, I'm patriotic." than it is to actually support the ideals of the constitution.
One of Penrose's conclusions was that any attempt at artificial intelligence is necessarily incomplete, so it won't be possible, while Hofstadter said that it is possible to successively approximate something intelligent, and we can learn a LOT about ourselves in the attempts, and that in itself is worth it.
It seems to me that unless there is something supernatural involved (a soul), it should be possible to construct an artificial intelligence. It may be something different than a computer, but it should be possible. The rest is just engineering.
We're all suppose to be nerds here so the answer should be "because you can." That said, I won't be impressed until they get Plan9 and Hurd running as well (quintuple boot?).
The thing that I really liked about the clamshell iBook is the handle. You close it and there's a handy handle to carry it with. Granted, someone described it as looking like a "drag queen's purse", but it was a tough handle. Most notebooks you just grab and hope for the best.
watch them twist and turn in their attempts to validate this one. gui's had this for over a decade... but they won't let facts get in the way of steve's glory!!!
I dunno. Most of the comments I've read are the usual "software patents = bad" sort of thing. A few do mention that the magnification feature of the dock might be patentable, but it's annoying and most people turn it off.
Those with long memories remember that when OS X first came out, most Apple users complained about the dock. I preferred the way that the classic Mac OS handled things with its Apple menu, which was more like the start menu in Windows. But that's long gone, so you wipe your eyes and move on.
So, the dock may, or may not be patentable, or features of it may be. But, why would anyone want to imitate it?

You would think that this was a site for nerds or something.

I am a protestant and fiercely proud of it.

I take it you've never heard of APL?
I would expect a convex meniscus. This happens when you put other liquids into a container that can't be wetted by them.

But, they have a different set of desktop backgrounds. Besides Ubuntu is brown.

Put another way, it's easy to put soda in your mouth and have yellow stuff come out of your underbits, but very difficult to do the reverse.

Wait a minute. This sounds like the last story about new equipment for the space station.
Even if you drink only fresh rainwater, you're still getting processed urine.

I still remember Erin Grey in her uniform from the show.
For the real grammar Nazis: s/Nazi's/Nazis
For the regular expression Nazis, you missed the closing "/"
Religious talk is just used used to fire up the masses. All the real decisions are all about money and power.
anyone reading this who is not going to vote, i have nothing for you but the most withering disgust i can muster
Not everyone here can vote in the U.S. elections. You might want to limit your withering disgust to those eligible to vote.
That was...disturbing
