I am a supporter of free/open software when that is the choice of the creator, but what exactly is wrong with rights management when the creators want to protect their creation and actually see a return on their investment of time and creativity? Music is not open source software. It is wrong for you to decide the scope of someone elses rights regarding their creations.
Nearly all music is created with the express condition of ownership being controlled by the creator -- whether they chose to trade those rights to a label/distributor for money is their choice, but that still does not give you the right to run roughshod over their express wishes.
That is what is wrong with consumers today. I know you want free music, but I think that most 'open source music' frankly sucks, and if you wan't to enjoy music composed by mainstream artists whose works are under copyright restrictions, it is only right to compensate the holder of that copyright -- whether you agree with the fact that the artist sold out those rights to a big. bad, evil, corporation or not. Otherwise, I'd like to 'open-source' your paychecks...see how long you want to keep working while your checks get smaller and smaller -- and this is not in defense of 'existing business models needing to stay the same". I agree that 'middlemen' and distributors who double the costs of existing music distribution channels are rightfully fucked, but that is where our savings should be found.
The internet is a great mechanism for streamlining delivery of media, but we have to get past the belief that creators and those who represent their creations(or who rightfully have aquired them) don't deserve fair compensation for their work or risk/investment.
I was about to post the same passage, but for a different reason...
I find that it is only the applications that use unsupported system calls and work-arounds that tend to get 'knocked out' by the system updates. A lot of the interface hacks and such often need to get readjusted after Apple improves the parts of the OS that they don't document.
I find that for the most part, 'properly written applications' (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way -- I undertstand the need to write unsupported hacks and all) actually get better 'for free' with each subsequent update. Speed, file and feature improvements in the guts make their way up to the apps.
Oh those were the days, last month, when we were on top of the world. I remember hearing them rejoice at their secret MUG meetings -- "We're number one! We're numbe...Damn!...We're number two! We're number two!"
I do find the 'fanboy' phenomenon interesting -- from both sides. I do not have a brand spanking new Mac or a brand spanking new PC but I find it interesting how both sides identify with the 'winners' in theses shootouts. I guess it is similar to sports fanatics -- I don't understand what makes 'fans' identify so hard with 'teams' of players who could give a rats ass about the fans -- whenever I hear anyone chanting "we're number one" I always wonder what that 'we' is supposed to mean. They are not part of the team. I did not have a hand in designing the G5 or the Athlon. What would I be celebrating?
I would like to take a chance at diffusing the mac zealot/PCs 'Rox'er experience -- I have never met a Mac user who in any situation incited a pro-mac rally. Quite the opposite, I find most mac users tend to be quiet about their choice of OS if for no other reason than the ignorance of others makes it rather annoying ("can you run Word?", "But there are no appllications for the Mac.", "can you play such-and-such game?")
I have used Macs for nearly 20 years -- as well as PC's running Windows(the last was Win 98) and Linux (ppc variations and RH). I could care less what others use.
I only become zealotous when I read others insane rantings (the tired mac users are gay thread, the 'zealot' thread) When I respond, I only want to provide a measured response. I don't care if my platform is the fastest -- we know that is always a short lived position. I do like to share the fact that I have always been productive using macs and that is the most important metric I can think of.
'If it was released for x86, no one would give a rat's ass'...
Why do so many x86ers say they want it ported then (I don't know a single mac user who wants x86 hardware)? I always thought people generally liked the OS but didn't like the 'limited' hardware options...or were interested in trying it without making the large investment in equipment.
While no sensible person would argue deployment numbers and market share, anyone who thinks Apple is 'struggling' as a business is struggling with reality. Apple is one of the few profitable companies out there, with a 'devout'(dare I say rabid/zealous user community), rapidly growing laptop market share and a strong foothold in many facets of the computing/entertainment industry. Regardless of top speed shootouts and partisan OS arguments, Apple is no Be or Amiga. They are not going anywhere...If you want to talk about a struggling company, then I'd talk about AMD or anyone else going head to head with Intel or MS.
Apple will never 'lose' to Intel or MS because they aren't really in competition with them. They may eternally remain less ubiquitous, but the old tired logic of automobiles rings true -- regardless of validity -- Porsche will never sell more than.1% of the car market, and even though you could buy a Vette for half as much as a Porsche Turbo (and more importantly it might be faster even) people will always buy Porsches and their limited market share will always mean that a porsche has the freedom to innovate regardless of bottom line. Or something like that...
Your use of the term 'da bomb' is retarded. You are retarded. You are a waste of resources. You are obviously a stunted individual, friendless, hopeless, destined for total obscurity. I look forward to not ever hearing anything about you. I have no doubt that you will eventually kill yourself once you have exhausted your limited ideas and realize that your l33t skillz don't even assure you a job at the local pretzel shack.
I'm sure your 'bomb' of an x86 with it's 'original' OS (WTF does that mean?)is real fast at downloading that bukkake porn that you fantasize so hard about, knowing that you will never find yourself in that same situation. It must really hurt inside knowing all this and still pretending that it doesn't. I sit here with my friends and we laugh at your infantile stupidity. Your opinions on these matters are always welcome because while you think that your barbs are so quick and biting -- oh that gay humor -- every AC post like yours is hours of laughter for us. So please keep them 'coming';)
I would return the "Shut the fuck up" sentiment, but I do really look forward to half-wits such as yourself, with their endless blathering about their PC's being 'straighter' than our Macs.
Even if one were to entertain the moronic statement that FLOPS isn't a very good performance metric(what is then?) across architectures, is FLOPS not the right performance metric to assess the power of one architecture? Are you really just denying the VA results for no good reason? Are you saying we should run SPECmarks on the VA and UT clusters? Are you really that dim? Is your existence really that threatened by the prospect that you might not be on the greener side? Is your grasp on reality really so tenuous that you must resort to calling your fellow computer-users zealots and fools? Do you actually think that the VA cluster's potential second place supercomputer status is fraudulent? Why would 5%-ers have so much sway?
I bet Dell and UT 'probably didn't know what they were doing...'
It's not like they are a big computer company or anything, right? And I mean what does a college computing department really know about computers, right? I bet they are kicking themselves wondering "if only we had the vast knowledge of that one AC on/., then we really would be cooking with gas." I guess you just need to be a little quicker next time in order to help the PC world save face. The computing world really needs great minds like yours...right...
I thought this was settled...$3000...dual 2Ghz G5...
I don't think anyone would really argue the low-price-point-computer issue, but I think we could safely cede the mid to high-ground argument once and for all...
You language skill was and still is more worse in need of upgrading every two years than my mac language ability which can easily outlast some four year at a time and all the High School trough you little fanatic will NOT change that fact...Whew, that...sure...was...something...
Who are you weenies? Talk about panties in a bunch -- you can't accept the fact that Apple delivered a kick-ass cluster for pennies on the dollar compared to a Dull? And it smokes the competition? I never got my hackles hackled back in the day whenever IBM announced a new 'Deep Whatever' that could smoke my Dell P1 166(no joke!)
Sheesh, I think some folks around here need to lay off the Intel-kool-aid. AMD is not a religion, though it sure seems like there are a lot of zealots out there;)
95% of the marketplace? That makes for a lot of rabid PC-fanboys. Makes the 5%-ers look downright domesticated...
The least scary thing I could imagine...Walking home through a dark alley and being 'jacked' by an overweight guy in a brown plaid short-sleeved shirt with a pocket protector, wielding a menacing ethernet punch-down tool:)
Seeing as the Xeon was a 2.4 Ghz and that the fastest Xeon is now 3.2 Ghz, It would only be.8 Ghz faster or approx. 33% faster which would still leave it behind the 2 Ghz G5's, if they truly were twice as fast...which I will not begin to argue here as I have yet to use one myself...
"and anyone with enough music to fill up an ipod certainly isn't using legal music..."
Once upon a time, there were these interesting places you would actually travel to, and you would pull out your wallet, and hand over green paper things and enter into a business transaction, and leave with an object(or ten) containing the 'music' you legally aquired...
It was really neat back then -- sure there was more music worth buying -- but many of us actually supported the musicians whose music we enjoyed, and by that I mean there are many people over 25 who have actual CD collections(mine is well over 500 CDs) not to mention those of us who have 'L.P.s'...ask your parents -- it was a device used for rolling joints:)
Fair enough...I retract all my observations regarding anonymity and simply state that I don't like homophobes/racists/sexists/etc...:) I am simply fighting the good fight...and have no qualms about people knowing that I am EK -- though I do think/.'ers tend to be exponentially rude, rather than insightful, when they are AC's -- which was kinda my point to begin with, but you sir, are an exception;)
While I completely understand your point, I think it is a disengenous argument...you are still completely anonymous...even up to this point -- I on the other hand (as you fairly point out) have a form of limited anonymity...I 'AM' ErnstKompressor. While you do not know explicitly who I am, I still stand behind my opinions and comments and in doing so allow you to know that it is the same person continuing in dialog.
The more interesting question is do you really understand what you are arguing for -- this thread began in regards to a percieved homosexual slight -- nothing horrendous mind you, but one that I have no qualms responding to. The question is are you defending the homophobes? Is that the anonymity you defend?

I couldn't agree more :)

I posted this elsewhere...The cluster is running OS X -- page 13 --not linux you nimrod...
;)
Besides, if it was running linux it would be liable for the 'SCO tax' what with Linux' inability to do 64 bit without SCO's 'contributions'
The cluster runs OS X -- page 13 --
:)
As much as you all would like it not to be so, it is, and that's that

Now, now, I thought I had the honorary role of 'zealotous Mac user prone to rudeness and insulting foreigners.'
I will now have to revoke your secret membership in the 'Cult of the Dead Mac'
