  1. Bye, Bye Karma.... on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Release Date Announced · · Score: 1

In many ways, anyone who attacks these books because they preach witchcraft etc COUGH*COUGH*CHURCH*TYPES*COUGH*COUGH are completely missing what these books have done.

I guess I would be one who fits in to the "Church Types" column, and I would have absolutly no problem letting my kids read them. I also own all the books and movies so far. I have heard objections from the more conservative of this column, and can see were they come from, but obviously have no exposure to the series.

Even children should have a distinction between Fiction and Non-fiction. That should be apparent in any childeren's novel. There are very few books out there that don't have something people will dismiss as 'not true' or 'not possible', but that doesn't mean we shouldn't read them and enjoy them!

You're creed is your business, and in everyday life anyone with any type of creed will have to make choices as to what they accept and regect. I very much enjoy a good fantasy, as do many, and see it as purley fiction without any bearing on my personal creed.

Besides, how many 'church types' lie^H^H^H tell their kid about Santa Clause!

Anyway, there goes my karma, and let the flamewar begin...

I currently work for a rurual telephone co-op. Previously we ran an N3 Motorola network that uses fiber to each neighborhood node and copper to the home. We are able to provide 5 mbps up and downstream(VDSL) in ADDITION to a 30mpbs stream for 3 televisions. However, the limitation is that we can only push video 1 mile, and DSL 2 miles from each node. This being a VERY rural area, this leaves about 10% of our customer without TV from us.

Currently we are wiring a completely new network in a neighboring city. This is to a complete FTTH network. This network has the capacity of 1 gbps to each premise. Currently the box on the house is limited to 40mbps up/down for internet service, and the rest used for HD-Video(up to 6 streams) and of course Voice(dialtone). Due to the long range capability of the equipement, we will be able to provide 100% coverage.

We are also in the process of rewiring some of our more rural copper to full FTTH. FTTH has a distinct advantage for 'last mile' issues due to its extremley long range/bandwidth over copper.

One interesting point is that the phone part of our FTTH services is NOT VoIP! It is still considered POTS(i'm in the internet dept, so don't quite understand what makes the destinction) That way it is still under the same regulation and rules (and revenue) as our copper customers.

I'm not sure what the verison system uses, but our FTTH equipment is quite standard and interfaces with our existing network systems (IP video and internet) quite well. There is defintly no need on our customer's end for proprietary equipment(other than the ethernet card in the computer and a VideoIP box for the TV--which we provide). Also our service rates are VERY competitive compared to the other providers in the area. And, cost recovery must be alright due to the fact that all our new service areas will continue to be FTTH at the same service rates as our copper customers.

AMEN! I bought a canon EOS for about $300, my friend bought a canon 6mpxl digital for around $900(i think), and my EOS does as good or better than the 6mpxl for 1/3 the price. That, and the accessories i can get for that(lenses, filters, shutterbulb-try that on digital) are SOO much more common.

For point and shoot, family photos, or pretty much any snapshot-not-really-artistic quality photos, digital's great. No film, developing, etc. But, there's still tons of things i couldnt do with a digital cam just because i can switch films. whereas a digital, you're stuck with one type of ccd/cmos sensor. You can tweak some settings, but overall its like using the same film for everything.

I have enough flexibility with my $300 EOS to do regular snapshots with ASA200, HUGE enlargments with ASA25, fast action with ASA800, or night arial survelance with ASA1600/3200.

Never fails, pretty much every 3 months compaq replaces their desktop line, and 3-4 months their laptop line(presarios and evos alike I believe... I work with both). Stocking them gets to be a bitch in a small market like ours... we order frequent small orders so not to get stuck with old models. So, if we hit it wrong, we're without computers for a week, because the old stock runs out, but the new stuff's still backordered.

Never fails, EVERY back-to-school season we run waaay short, especially on laptops(so figure your cycle starting end of august).

Epson and HP's printers keep a little more lifespan, usually 4-6 months, whenever the decide we need more faux-resolution increase, or a new type of ink/cartridge.

Monitors... a year or better product cycle, at least for CRTs anyway... havent changed much beside the (case) color in a while either.

I usually buy RIGHT at the end of product life.. get nice and cheap then.. but i hate it because the next product I see a week later is always sooo much cooler :)
