  1. Ane when the power goes out on your RAM HD? on Why Not Solid State Hard Drives? · · Score: 0, Redundant

Umm.. i hate to be the only pesemist here, but if you build a drive outa plain old SyncRAM, what do you do when the power goes out? I mean, sure there's UPS and the like but, still.

It'd be great for swap space or temp storage... but if that's the case, PUT THE RAM ON THE MOTHERBOARD DUMMY! and if anything, create a ramdisk from that ram!

I wanna BOOT from it.. I'd love to fire up my box hand have the "login:" sitting there after i blink!

I just got done reading the Windows eX Pee propaganda that came with the newly released Compaqs at my store. "eX Pee is the best windows blah blah.. revolutionize your computer the internet blah blah.. so many wonderfule technical advances.. blah"

Then i read this.. Linus seems so much more intentive at improving the actuall OS and not just fancier marketing. Actually no marketing at all(not _always_ a good thing, but... ) And an OS that isn't super duper revolutionary, with new and usless technology. Just a plain old GOOD OS!!

Was the article actually READ before posted?

Ok, so if I understand this correctly, M$ has godly powers because its OS designates what programs are associated with which files? UMMMM... MIME anybody?!?!!

Can you imagine an OS that couldn't tell you what files did what? What WOULD you have the OS do when you opened a file.. try to execute as a binary.. or open it in a text editor? You would have to specify each file manually.. including BINARIES/.exe's!! Even Linux assignes files to certain programs... my new install of Caldera don't do it worth a shit.. but it does it! Hell,my install assignes .mpg to a program that is isn't even installed on my workstation yet!

And guess what, with Windblows.. when you install a program, it can TAKE OVER the use of the file!(something i wish linux could get right!) Take Windows Media Puker vs. Winamp. By default, WinMP is assigned .mp3, but as soon as you install Winamp, IT gets control of .mp3!

Normally, i'd never defend M$, but geez, THINK for a bit before posting please :)

  5. Re:When is the verification done? on Acer Laptop W/Fingerprint Recognition System · · Score: 1

I'm guessing thatsome part of the OS would have to load. The BIOS would have to have a quite larege program to analyze the scan, and some pretty hefty storage to store the unlocking print.
Possible maybe BIOS level though.. it'd be alot nicer to lock the OS out totally(waay too easily bypassed)

    ITS ABOUT FREAKIN TIME!

I work as a consultant in a fairly small to medium sized market. I deal mainly with setting up and maintaining small companies' LANS (and Securing them) Even in this small market we have our share of Script Kiddie Lusers.. It seems like every week i have to deal with somebody's system that has been compromized because the not-all-that-bright user opens the email attatchment or file from someone on ICQ or decided that it'd be so much easier to change the access rights to C: to Full, no password.
SO i get a fair share of the not so l33t h4x0r5 tampering with machines over the newly introduced DSL system. So when i finally do track some of these punks down(and yes.. i do actually bother to try, heh)There isnt squat i can really do. And if local law enforcement does wake up and do something it'll be a slap on the wrist.

Cuz after all, they're just kids playin with the computer.

Heh, now if i could call them TERRORISTS!!! instead of the meaningless term hacker or cracker.. THAT might get some attention!
