I notice you use "some" in that quote. So, I presume you do so because it is fewer than half the total population that is using Google. I'd wager the vast majority (70% or more?) of users don't care that passionately about it. So, you want this feature, which most users are fine with, to go away for everybody? Something seems a bit off there, but I wish you good luck in your journeys.

  2. Re:"Homebrew", right... on Sony Releases PS3 Firmware Update To Fight Jailbreaks · · Score: 1

You'd be surprised what people will do. Given a homebrew mod and a SDK, a lot of interesting things will come about. Look at the Wii as an example. Sure there's one side that makes the software to run backups and the like, but there are numerous utilities like media players, cute little games, etc. Sure, you will never see something along the lines of Uncharted 2 come from the homebrew crowd, but you will get some stuff that is nonetheless entertaining.

I think by making such a major fuss over this, Sony is drawing more attention to the hack then would happen if it did nothing until they had something substantial to include in a system update, sneaking the fix in with it. But if it appears in the news over and over as each side counters the other, it'll drive some curiosity toward the mods.

The general public is still very scared of electronic devices breaking, and so, refuse to mod, pirate, etc., lest the risk the dreaded brick and have to pay for a new one. The computer savvy folks will always pirate, those sales will never come in. Provide fun, interesting games at a reasonable price, and you will make money.

My wife and I have a Nintendo DS each. My daughter wanted to play it from about six months old, just watching us play something. By perhaps 1.5, we got her a Crayola coloring game. She loved being able to scratch around the screen and wildly color the animals. It turns out she was closely watching us press Start, select a couple menu options, etc to change the picture all the time, and had those motions down pat quickly. No more crying, "I want the dinosaur now" and such. Now she is 4 and can maneuver just about any DS game, figure out what menu options do, etc., without being able to read a single word. It's funny how many very-young kid games require a lot of reading. Game makers are goofy that way. As annoying as Dora sounds, those games are pretty well built, telling the kid what to do rather than writing "Find the red circle."

Also, she loved watching me play World of Warcraft. Just make up your own games, What animal is this, etc. She loved watching scenery, bunnies, castles, etc. Just before her 3rd birthday, I got up to go the bathroom to come back to her figuring out maneuvering in a 3-D world. Within 15 minutes she knew how to time holding left/right to turn where she wanted and go anywhere. Within a couple play sessions she knew Ironforge extensively, riding the Tram, finding all the staircases (who knows why, but she loves stairs...), falling long distances, etc. Once she got outside, she had a huge panic moment when a level 3 wolf attacked my level 80 character... Good times.

Naturally, anything is fine in moderation.

It isn't that difficult, with a little Googling. The one questionable item (which you can find on the Internet) is that drive signature file. But I did it all recently in about 5 minutes. Bought an XBox360 Arcade with no hard drive. Bought an hd case from DealExtreme, a HD from newegg. Run a simple command-line utility, pointing it to the signature for the right size hd (up to 250GB). Put the drive in the hd case, put it on your Xbox, and you're done. Connect to the net, install updates, you want, etc. The core Dashboard is in the Xbox, but perhaps just updates are on the HD. Backing up an existing drive takes some time, but this was my first Xbox, so I had nothing to backup.

There are relatively few deaths due to mistakes of this nature. And, as having worked in the IT and Medical fields separately, I can say, people will just become much better idiots. Blood pressure lines and IV lines haven't been identical in my ten years in medical, but I can see an idiot getting loads of tape or something to keep it secured to the line because, "It just won't stay on."

My wife had her kidneys removed and it is amazing how many nurses and other staff want her to pee in a cup for them. You can give all the specialized adapters, colors, training, etc, but people will still find a way to be stupid.
