  1. Re:I'm amazed on Adobe Releases Flash To HTML 5 Converter · · Score: 2

I would bet that they would gladly give up their flash player because they don't really sell it. If you think about it the world is doing Adobe a favor by providing a file format and viewers for the content created by it's tool sets, that it actually sells. They sell their creative tools, the flash player was always needed to provide a way to view these creations. Now that HTML5 can accomplish much of this they see a way out of the constant development on their player.

Steve Jobs probably thought he was punching them in the balls, but in reality he just handed them more cash. The adobe creative suite is on almost every designer machine in the western world. "Flash", meaning SWFs might be going away, but the creative tool sets are here to stay for a long while. Then throw in their new "Flash Builder", aka Flex, and you have a powerful set of tools. That's what they sell.

When one of the world's most powerful machines can't beat a field of high _limit_ players then where is the one that beats high stakes no limit players? It doesn't exist sir.

First thing - computers can't beat humans at strategy games where there are huge variables in risk versus reward, such as No Limit Texas Hold em. They can use strategies of course but a pro player can tear them to pieces. See the notes on Man versus machine where Polaris went up against poker geniuses like Bryce Paradis and then read his post analysis if possible. And that was a game of limit. No limit adds a layer of complexity that makes the mind boggle. And that's a simple game. Imagine applying strategy to a game where variables such as human emotions adds weight to a decision.

Two - Could the machine ever gather the same information in the time given a coach? A coach intakes an immense amount of information using all his senses and his staff of assistants. When a computer can intake the same amount of information on a field of play we will have created artificial life. Not something trivial.

Game strategy is ultimately based on information gathering inside information sparse environments. How can a computer compete in that realm?

I'm not in any camp. I'm a free thinker. Questioning is part of that. There was a time when some of the greatest minds in the world thought blood letting was the best way to treat a lot of disease. They were not ignorant or malicious. They truly thought they were doing the best thing. So please excuse the world if we question some things that science assumes as truth. It's not being irrational. You're the one being irrational by saying we shouldn't question it. We're not saying it's wrong. We're saying please provide more evidence and let's approach this very serious issue with extreme caution given the stakes.

Now this I can tend to agree with but there are real time Java systems. I went looking for more information on the runtime and OS used for this EFD system but couldn't find any. Real time is not optional in this situation, IMHO. And when I see symptoms like "not fast enough", I tend to agree with you. They might have used a technology ill suited to the real time nature of ATC and that was the big mistake.

I just think it's too easy to go to that well, the Java is slow well. Those days are past in most cases. But real time? Sheesh that's a gamble I'm not willing to take myself.
