backend and did the Development work in MacOS, but again using a free IDE.. Atom is awesome!
I was coding with OpenCV and wanted to use an Nvidia eGPU. I picked up an Akito Node and a Nvidia GTX970. I also wanted to run Linux as the host OS and
run MacOS as a guest with virt. the IOMMU on the Mac hardware is hobbled. The firmware cripples the capability. Wow.. I didn't pay full price for my 6Core MacPro but man.. I really got pissed with Apple. I ended up buying Hades Canyon NUC. 500GB NVME SSD, 32GB dual ranked memory. I as able to use my Thunderbolt2 JBOD that was attached to my MacPro. Also my Akito Node egpu runs flawlessly with it. Ubuntu Bionic Beaver runs great, The egpu passthrough
works great with Virt.. Virtualbox it doesn't but I think it's a Virtualbox issue. KDE Plasma 5 is slick., I configured Ciaro-Dock, Breeze Dark Workspace Theme with the Diamond Desktop Theme is WOW!. I've got all my SDR software working, GQRX, CubicSDR, Pothosware.. all works great! Now as for video editing I need to make a decisiion between Lightworks , Divinci Resolve, or KdenLive. They are all great! My AMD Vega and my Nvidia GTX970 work well. I was able to configure KDENLIVE to render with my eGPU. I am currently using KdenLive for my home video projects.
Bottom Line is Apple, I am done with you!
The market can alter dumb decisions like Apple's fight to prevent you from fixing your own hardware. Simply only buy hardware that you can service or other
companies service. You should be able to use third party components to fix your own device if the component has similar or better specs.
This is the reason why I dumped Apple. I have a MacPro late 2013 black can desktop with the Dual D700 GPU failure problem. There are no third party replacement boards. I fixed it alright. I built up an Intel Hades Canyon NUC, used 32GB Dual Ranked memory, 500GB internal NVME SDD. It works fine with my external thunderbolt JBOD (home directory,/opt ). I installed Ubuntu Bionic Beaver 18.04. Steam works great. It's faster than my 6Core MacPro. Cheaper.

We don't need to become vegatarians, we just need to be better stewards of our resources.

With all the hoopla about Apple throttling old iPhones I no longer trusted Apple. I now run Ubuntu 17.10 bare metal on my Macpro. One of my D700's are
used for my Virtual machines, the other for the Host OS applications. it's fast! It's a better development environment. I run Simplify3d for my Robo R1+ printer on the native OS. I use my 2nd D700 for a virtual machine that runs Design Spark Mechanical edition. I also use FreeCad natively on Linux. Design Spark really works well. I would like know how to implement an eGPU in Linux on the current 2013 MacPro Black Can hardware. I did a deep dive to analyze how it was done on MacOS, it appears to be a PCI Tunnel passthrough. When implementing eGPU in Linux I get BAR resource errors. Has anyone implemented eGPU in Linux on a 2013 MacPro Black Cylinder Desktop ?

Lets say a the mission starts when mars is closest to the earth. 150 days out... 10 days on mars... @ 300 days to make it home.
the mission would last at least 1 1/2 years. That's a long time to survive space. Life support systems can fail. return command module can fail.
The landing module would need to provide a shelter against the harsh martian environment. Adequate air pressure, oxygen, nitrogen, and protection against solar and cosmic radiation. The martian magnetosphere is very weak.

We are going to need enough fuel for lift off of mars, break martian gravity and point the spacecraft to earth, and a safe reentry.
