    But how do wages compare? AFAIK wages in China tend to be less than wages in the US, so of course things will cost less. How do the costs of food compare relative to the average wage?

    When I signed up for my google account (gmail) I never had to get a text message or voice call.... Then again this was years ago, and I signed up via invite, so maybe things have changed...

    I read something (I think it may have been on /. actually) stating that the handheld communication device came about BECAUSE it was featured on star trek. Dunno how accurate that is but it's an interesting thought.

    In the sample set OP gave, the person buying the car would have taken a taxi otherwise. No deaths would have happened either way. In the larger scheme of things, yes, this could help with people who would have driven themselves home rather than take a taxi, but that wasn't what was put forth.

    This issue came up in I, Robot (the movie). The robot saved Will Smith (sadly I can't remember the name of the character he played) rather than the girl, because he had a better chance of surviving.

    The vocal group of nerds are the ones I'm talking about... Since the poster I was actually replying to appeared to be a member of said group, I was trying to point out that just because they don't like the way the device functions doesn't mean it functions improperly.

    My mother once hit a dear going 55 MPH. The car stopped because she braked (after she hit it), not because of hitting the deer. Yes, it slowed her down, but not enough to stop the car. The deer went flying though....

    If I brake to avoid hitting something and someone rear-ends me, if the damage is bad enough I still have to wait for it to get repaired, regardless of who pays for it. Regardless of who is at fault I will suffer by not having a car for a few days/weeks.

    The problem is, no matter how reliable the self-driving cars are than regular drivers, if they cause ANY accidents people are going to balk.

    Well it depends on how much detail the engine allows. I knew some people who did something similar to this last year. They built a pretty wicked game using XNA. I'm not sure I'd consider XNA programming to be modding. Then again I'm not sure if XNA actually qualifies as an engine or if it's just a detailed library.

    Theoretically they could access it via the OS itself (by backends built into the operating system) over the cell network. I rather doubt this actually exists, but it is possible, and a lot of anti-Google or just tin foil hats around here seem to think that every phone has a backdoor built into it.

    Is it the FDIC that pays back the accounts? I always thought it was just a law that the bank had to keep enough cash on hand to pay back all accounts up to $100,000.

    Hmm sorry if that was confusing. By disconnect I meant "gap between what the product does and what the consumer expects", not dropped calls.

    While this is a good point, I'd say English would be the language of interest since AFAIK the country that banned the Galaxy Tab is Australia, and they mostly speak English there (again, AFAIK, never actually be there myself).

    (Feel free to laugh at this if you want) I'm no fan of Apple but their products do work. They do exactly what they are designed to do. The disconnect comes when consumers expect them to do something different.

    The potential for abuse I see is that a large company could simply steal a patent and the smaller person who held it wouldn't be able to afford legal fees for both, even if the larger company was at fault. (And this goes the other way for the previous option I suggested).

    Maybe the lawyers just shouldn't be paid until the suit ends, then whoever loses pays up. However as some of these suits can go on for years that honestly wouldn't be fair to the lawyers themselves (they ARE human beings and need to eat and sleep, ect, regardless of popular opinion). Then again, it may be on the fault of the lawyers that the suits last so long in the first place....

    I second this. I've been using Adblock Plus in Chrome for a few weeks now and it's amazing the difference it makes in pages. Works very well.

    Two INCHES? Are you kidding me? Invest in some snowplows.... We got 6 FEET once where I grew up (and this is in CA too). The only difference was the snowplows went out a couple of times a day rather than one).
