I would really like to know if this project would even be relevant to the FSF if everybody just agreed to call it GNU/Linux and not just Linux. Stallman is pushing this thing because he *hates* Linux, not because he loves free software.
It's interesting that at first you denegrate Exchange ("I work for uses Exchange (puke)"), but then admit that there is no IMAP/SMTP solution that offers "the full range of Exchange/Outlook functionality".

This kind of competition sounds great for stabilizing the economy. Aren't these the same tactics all the CLECs were using before they all when bankrupt and were bought wholesale by AOL & AT&T?
Convervation of kinetic energy requires that for something to lose kinetic energy (excited and fast moving ceramic particles) something else has to pick up the energy (a heat sink, the air, a finely sprayed mist). The only thing the mist is doing is efficiently exchanging kinetic energy levels with the chip.
Someday we have to realize that cooling the chips is not the answer: making cooler chips is.
It's just simple conservation of energy. The heat of a hot chip contributes to the overall global warming because the chip required enough energy to make it very hot, so dissipating the heat into the environment just exacerbates the global warming trend.
The answer is to make a chip that doesn't require as much energy to run and therefore doesn't dissipate as much energy into the environment.
I think the the comparison is not valid in that the corporations "get theirs" when Apple cuts them a check. (In theory) no one pays RMS, so he "gets his" by getting credit, kudos, etc.
That being said, I tend to think along the same lines as Linus and be more pragmatic about the whole thing. I'm not sure it that is reason defining my emotions or the opposite, but I can't see it from RMS' side of things.
Wait a minute, if China is the 3rd country to successfully put a human in orbit, doesn't that make the score Communism 2, Democracy 1?
I've had mine for about a week and love it.

I just got mine last week with a P4 and 1GB RAM. It runs great. I have the 1.80A P4 OC'd to 2.2 GHz and it's rock stable.
A couple of observations:
* With the fan guardian on, the fan is not noisy at all, and only speeds up to the point of being audible during very long compiles, even with it overclocked.
* I tried a small form factor AMD XP 1700+ (*NOT* the SS40), and it generated much more heat than this does. I am just guessing, but I imagine the SS40 is going to have much worse heat problems than the SS50.
I hightly recommend the SS50 to anyone looking for a luggable box.
It is a specification, like COM. Once MS published the spec, they couldn't and didn't want to prevent people from making a Un*x version. With all of the other.NET server apps, they don't really care if you bought your copy of an MS server, if you can run their other server components (ASP.NET, ADO.NET).
Throwing 2 or 100 developers (which they won't use that many) is chump change for them. It's a LOT cheaper than the advertising dollars they'd need to spend to convince the Linux community that "they care".
All the big corporations are the same. They've all realized that they don't have to spend millions on advertising, they just have to hire a couple of very vocal developers, and let them work on open source whatever. It makes them look good in the trade rags, and the whole open source community has a love fest with them. And once again the developers are the pawns.
Hear here.
There will always be a difference of opinion about anything that people have stong emotions about. I don't know enough from the technical side to know if the Mach is better or not, but it seems that if one were far superior to the other, the other would eventually disappear.
Yourdon , who may or may not be a member of the/. community, wrote the book, not the rest of the members. And since this is an open forum for dicussion of issues near and dear to us, why should we not review a relevant book just because the title of the book reminds (some) us of a horrible piece of our history.
If I were Jewish, I would like to keep that particular piece of history in everyones' minds, in an effort to prevent it from repeating itself.
How? There are no ads shown on the gmail inbox screen, and there are no ads shown by gmail's own notifier.
...yet.

My $0.02 (-$12.02 after depreciation).
You know that the second a kid got in the stall, he'd peel the "I." off of "I.B.M."
When reading the FAQ, please mentally substitute all instances of "We" with "I, Richard Stallman".
Thank you,

You can't have your cake and eat it, too.
The US Gov probably has export restrictions (especially since 9/11) on alot of the technology they are using for the launch.

we didn't have no fancy LANs or PCs. If we wanted simlated blood-letting, we had to play D&D.
I think you're missing something.

Aren't you making their case for them not doing it?
I tried to get it resolved with the branch of USC that was supposedly the arbitrar of such issues. They replied:
Thank you for your message. We are investigating your complaint and
will contact you when we have more information.

That was in October of 99. Further inquiries on my part yeilded no results.
Maybe ICANN will screw it up, but at least you'll have someone to turn to with an issue.
