Nothing. I'm referring to the ID requirement.

It's to preserve price discrimination between reasonably-priced "leisure" fares that require an advance purchase and Sat. night stay, and ass-raping "business" fares that don't. I remember reselling plane tickets back in my college days before they cracked down.

This practice (making the ticket non-transferable) should definitely be outlawed as unlawful restraint of trade. But this will happen when pigs fly.

  4. Kill Your Television on Time Warner to Allow Digital Recording · · Score: 1
I'll tell you what would change my life: throwing away my damn TV.

You can't do it, can you? (Hey, neither can I: I probably watch 2x the television now that I have a tivo.)

  5. Why? on Sili-Hudson Valley? · · Score: 1
Why are they so excited about a location that is over 100 miles from their nearest constituent company (IBM)?

Why did the Dodgers move to Los Angeles? Cold, hard cash.

I hate flash because it's slow to load, hard to stop animations, and (unlike java) impossible to turn off once you've installed the plugin. So when I installed mozilla, I did NOT install flash - and I've been happy with the results.

I suppose I should get on bugzilla and ask for a "Turn Off Flash" option (and also other plugins like MIDI - **shudder**) rather than bitch on slashdot, but why do that when bitching on slashdot is so much more fun?

You're right, though, that Flash need not suck. Yatta is a good example of what one should do with it.

  7. Force-fed a stream on Broadcasters Appeal Royalty Ruling · · Score: 1

isn't that what SomaFM et al. do? You don't pick the songs on Groove Salad, for instance.

  8. Compare to MP3.com on Perl for Web Site Management · · Score: 1

I hope I don't come off as an elitist, but don't we have enough "unsigned bands" acting as bands? I have full respect for a dj or singer wishing to learn jazz and deep house. However, teaching them the tools first is not going to make them a good musician. I'm afraid that websites like this will lead towards more poorly written and performed music. Music is Media and should be treated as such. Is it just me, or does anyone else share this feeling?

  9. Arrgh on A Medireview Approach To Stopping E-Mail Attacks · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why not just give the user the option to STRIP OUT ALL THE FUCKING HTML IN EVERY EMAIL? I for one HATE html email - hate it with a passion - hate the slow loading and the crashing browsers and the cookies/images loaded without my permission. Add that feature and this problem goes away.

  10. Re:Orbital on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

Me too actually - they had a whole bunch in Amoeba on Haight.

  11. Damn right. on Carp-Free Independent Music Labels · · Score: 2
Hopefully the labels used by SomaFM and others can sign up to this, and then we can get our Groove Salad back!

(p.s. CARP is still crap. I sent this fax just now, you can too.)

This was the Post of Death. Total moderations were about 800. Many (but not all) users who modded it up were $rtbl'd (banned from moderation) - see sllort's journal for a very detailed account.

FWIW there is now a User Created Discussion on this subject - interesting and mostly civil debate there.

I'll agree that I don't listen to Middle as much now, but for the newbie it's a nice choice. Fave at the moment is the B side of Altogether. Need to get Insides and Snivilisation... off to Amoeba later today.

  15. Orbital on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 5, Informative

Start with The Middle of Nowhere, then get The Altogether and The Brown Album. Good start for me a few years ago, and it can be for you too. (Also on my iPod at the moment: Kruder & Dorfmeister, The K&D Sessions.)

Maybe so, but unlike in Singapore ("Asian values" = caning) we have a tradition of individual rights. So, piracy notwithstanding, the onus is on us to protect such rights, and exercise them, and show no respect to those who would take them away in the name of their own convenience and fifth avenue mansions.

  21. Interesting but on Sony Hard Drive Recorder for Cars · · Score: 2

I will echo the other comment that says iPod is the answer. I use mine in the car all the time with a tape player adapter - not ideal, but it works fine. A better iPod adapter (say a cellphone style rack with built-in audio feed to the stereo) would be ideal, since iPod stays in your pocket and doesn't get stolen, unlike this thing which just about screams "Soon I will buy a No Radio sign."
