    I mean, really, there are like 8 competing standards for open source desktops now. The division of labor cannot be helping. Merge. Or park the current desktops at their current levels, and converge to create one new master desktop. All new technology that people can get really excited about. And aim the new one higher than where the corporates will be in 10 years.

    People here are talking about configuring MySql to run out of ram, update to ram, etc. But can't you accomplish much the same thing by not flushing the buffer cache? Or even tuning the machine so that the buffer cache gets lots of the ram? Doesnt Linux support lazy writes to disk? Why isnt MySql running mostly out of disk buffer cache?

    In order to get your code (any code) to run on these appliances you will have to be licensed. Then the licenses will be harder and harder to get until there is only once source of software. And it will be crappy, bloated, and you will have no choice.

    Its interesting that the bad food is so cheap, in part, because the ingredients are subsidized by the US government. In some neighborhoods, its impossible to purchase food that is actually good for you. Or the pricing structure makes it too expensive.
    Not only that, but farmers are going out of business trying to grow stuff that is good to eat. They are not eligible for the subsidies. So they learn to grow stuff that is bad for us instead. Its also greatly slanting the system towards huge factory farms.

    If he wants to fix something, put a high state tax on Federal farm subsidies. And put the proceeds towards opening markets for healthy foods. Level the field.

    Plain old xfce works just fine without any trickery. Except for the creation of custom icons. That requires a few more steps than I like, but I'll live. Its very very stable.

All certificates should be signed by the software provider as the trusted authority. Your browser or library comes with baked in certs
    and only those certs can be used to update to different certs or to authenticate certs.
    The browsers et all are already gatekeepers of your security. Lets just make it official.

    1. You get a print-out of your vote.
    2. You can optionally get a print-out that says whatever you want in case you are under duress.
    3. There is a picture record of who voted for your ID in case of a question of voter fraud.
    4. The machines are already everywhere, wired and secure enough to handle money.
    5. You dont have to congregate at a place away from your work.
    6. Your vote is filed under a random number, so you can call your vote back up if you are concerned about tampering

    There should not be a -different- way of updating every different software package I have. There should be one system for doing updates, and each software package hooks into it. I dont care if java has to pay to get distributed by windows update or if we force windows update to cater to java. But these little toolbar popups are crap and everyone knows it. They are a joke, and advertising opportunity that no one believes in. Was that a real update, or did they just want to install their toolbar again? And that goes for Mac update too.
    Fix the god damn infrastructure.

    Is there an advantage to having the media libraries inside Comcast's network so that Comcast does not need to pay at their border? Does Comcast get charged upstream for their bandwidth?
    Also, Comcast wants to serve media via its xfinity web offerings. Cannot Sony leverage that since many of those titles will belong to Sony?
