As much as we hate spam, this one is really good. Get people to give you 20 or so emails from their address list voluntarily. Then spam those 20 to get 20 more. the those 400 to get 20 more then etc etc...
Despite the fact people are getting unsolicited email from a company that they have had no business dealings with (and the fact that that is illegal...) this does seem to be an unique business tactic. Unique but sleazy and underhanded as well.
This really sucks for Nvidia. They had the Xbox chips ready to go and MS, instead of using up the current supply and then transitioning, forces Nvidia to scrap the line and go with their newly resecured chips.
An analagy to this would be if MS upgraded our operating system in the run of the night and billed us for it; even though we did not consent for them to do this.
What is really funny is that modding consoles does no damage to the companies bottom line. MS makes money from developer fees, developers make money from the games they sell, and hackers get to have fun and maybe download a hacked game. (this assumes they have a dvd burner, which many don't). By doing this MS has made the XBOX look bad to hardware devlopers [who loose when they have to scrap technology], software developers [wouldn't want MS to change something games rely on], and the tech elite[who don't like MS anyway].
Of course this really doesn't matter much when it comes to Xbox sales and games. As the old sayings go, the games speak for themselves. Too bad the Xbox family lacks vocal cords.
VHS became popular in the mid 70's I think. (I don't know, wasn't conceived then). DVD was released in 1996-7. I bought my first DVD player in 1998 from Circuit City. I paid 250 for it, got a new movie, and 5 divx discs. (Still love whipping them out and scaring my friends). When Divx went under I got 100 check in the mail. So my question is, will this new standard be avaliable less than 2 years after its release for 150 dollars? If not, they are wasting theirs and our collective time.
The most good that will come from this format is putting the last nail in the VHS coffin.
Are you a server, business or home user? I understand that you want as much bandwidth as possible, but if you are just a home user, 400 kbit down stream is not bad at all.
To answer your question directly, my solution would be to buy a cheap box (like say, the Mandrake boxes from Wal-Mart) and use it as your traffic shaper. Linux products for this are much cheaper than any (useable) solution you can find for windows.
It sounds sensible until you try to download a full Linux distro (like mandrake or Redhat) which are between 1 and 2 GB each. If somone cancels your download, the computer crashes, or gets interupted for any reason you are out a lot of Downloads.
*note: I am assuming by Gb you meant GigaByte and not Gigabit, if so my argument changes from if it fails to when you try.*
Dr. Who was(is) great because of the fact that the stories had plot. I just got finished watching "Genisis of the Daleks" and it is great. The story develops at a nice pace, the villian (Davaros) you grow to hate, but in the end you feel sorry for him because you actually get to understand him (albet in odd ways). These elements always make for a good story. It can only get better if they add better effects.
Oh yeah, if you want proof you can have good effects and good plot, watch Star Trek:Enterprise. The eps are quality (usually, or maybe Voyager just set my standards low).
I am currently in the process of making a dorm theater system using my PC. While I think that a PC would be useful in an HT system, it is much more pratical in a dorm where it is useful as both a time and space saver. It saves space by replacing the TV, DVD player, VCR, and audio reciever (provided you have sufient equipment. 4.1 sound cards and DVD drives are not hard to find, and ATI AIW series is pretty good). Also, I tend to have MANY movies custom ripped and such on my hard drive. Since my TV is smaller than my monitor (15 inch TFT) I use that. My roomie and I both agree that Daria, QaF, and movies look better on it than my TV (C64 monitor +VCR).
Ahh a free alternative that performs as fast as and more securely than a competitor. The good hting about this is how Apachae is worth the money and time, however IIS has many dynamic features that people like. Also IIS is easier to manage and maintain for an individual. My quesiton is, what are the pratical ramafications of a company completely moving away from IIS to Apache?

Our world is so huge and our history is so enormous. Why is it that when a site of great historical impoartance is found that there are always dozens of holy rollers that try to twist it more than what it is? (That being an archaeological find.) I find it amazing that we could be so close to something so signifigant and think it wasn't there for 2000 years. Kinda makes me wonder about Atlantis.
Since the QT toolkit is "free" as in beer for windows, what are the chances of having some one port KDE3 to windows to replace explorer.exe like litestep does?
Congrats to the mozilla team. It seems like only yesterday that I was using Netscape 2.0 for my webbing needs... I look foward to seeing what new and innovative features are added (I love the javascript support in Moz, and gesture browsing is a godsend)

...that it is time for jpeg2000.
Too bad this patent covers the whole spectrum of compressing images by removing redundant data.

But will they go on strike when we turn them off?
Wouldn't nuke a border line system that has a shoddy Power Supply by chewing up 80-100% of the CPU for 2 hours + straight.
... That hackers/crackers would only have to bypass one security "feature" Before I got rooted?
I can see the headline now.
The only security hole you will ever need.

And will my karma go to hell if I wear a MS or Intel Shirt?
Use the P4 and Geforce 4 to crank up high frame rates and burn the ever living crap out of the guy next to you. Finally, a real reaosn to have a P4.
Also makes suitcase nukes a whole lot easier to build.
But when will I be able to get a no fee firwire adaptor? :-D

Just my thoughts on the best place for a HTPC.
