I disagree. The use of a non-standard graphics and audio APIs(DirectX. Sure, it's in high use in the gaming market, but I'll bet my own ass that OpenGL is more often used in the many many many other applications for 3D) is a hinderance.
The X Box, while not cost effective at the moment, is actually superior to the other 'big three' consoles. Many see it as the future of gaming because it's basically a standardized CPU.
Standardized CPU? The 68k CPU that resided in the Genesis wasn't standardized? The 6502 that the NES used wasn't standardized?
The future of gaming is, and always has been, fun games. It's not about CPUs, RAM, or video chips. They make making games *easier*, or harder, but they don't make games *better.*
This is fine and dandy and all, but I currently have 4 DVD reading devices that can't read +R for shit. That is, a Playstation2, a stand alone Sony DVD player, and 2 other DVDROM drives in this house.
Doesn't play PS2 games. and there are far more PS2 games(particularly of the import variety) to make it worth my purchase. But then again if I can afford a PSX, I can also afford an XBox, but I'd rather use the PSX for that purpose. Plus it can burn DVDs. But then again, at this point...
But also, remember, this wasn't designed by SCEJ, this was designed by Sony's home appliance department.
Actually, I HAVE read Slander anda bit of Treason. Both books implement a variety of fallacies. Such as the "Slippery Slope" and using "broad strokes." In that aspect, it's a masterpiece, but they're supposed to be serious works, so I rate each -1239 stars out of 10.
Not saying "bah" out of any sort of disbelief. Quite the opposite. Isn't "baaah" the sound sheep make? (note: *I* am making the sheep noises, therefore *I* must be the sheep.)
Depends. I remember playing DDR for $1 or so a pop at Playdium and beatmania for like, 50 cents, which is far cheaper than what I would've paid in the states.
Not true. The R&D done on the PS2 has gone in to developing Arcade platforms such as Pyson(python?) and System246(Konami and Namco, respectively), among others. The same with the original Playstation. Similar chips and design were used in the arcade counter parts.
And now, the GameCube has been the base for the Triforce hardware base. Not to mention embedded and other implementation of the hardware(I'm not sure of any but I thought I'd cover the base just in case there might have been other implementation of the PlayStation2 and Playstation platforms).
Given the cost of arcade hardware and software, I'd say that the cost of R&D is nominal, at best.
(Yeah, yeah, sales in the US for arcade hardware is drooping, but internationally, it's not that bad...)
microsoft hemmorages money EVERYWHERE but OS and Office. although that could change soon.
Also, microsoft COULD get away with NOT bleeding money on every xbox sold if they didn't spend so goddamn much on getting cutting edge hardware.
(Also, Sony could have graphics that owuld beat the living crap out of the Xbox if they had released a better SDK, if i remember correctly, which makes sense afer playing GT4.)
Let's get the facts straight right now. the console gaming industry, on average, does NOT work on the Razor/blades economic system. the GC is sold at a profit, not a loss.
the original copyright owners are either broke or don't care.
I've seen these "7000-in-1" combos myself, and they're mostly like, 20 or so games with different code hacks where you'll start on different levels or so.
Not the actual price depending on your location. Most modern(post 1990?) coin op games have some sort of pricing setting in the service menu and can be set as high as 8 coins, whatever coin you may use. Whether it be a quarter, nickel, or loonie.
prey was also a playable alpha too.
Oh, I was taking the phrase, "CPU" literally.

Well, the bible has it quite clear what G-d does to those who oppose israel...

Fixing a box after AOL's software hosed the TCP/IP stack is similar to fixing someone with fucked up lungs thanks to smoking. :)

It's a windows device.
It's already falling apart.
ZING
why not build a windows media center device that can break itself up so youcan use just the audio only portion for on the go?
Nancy Lieder is going to have a field day with this?

I'm going to be burning with DVD-R from now on.
