    Because there are logistical realities preventing just any ol person from running the fiber and copper needed to run their own cable or telco. It's not switching deodorant brands. There are many externalities involved in running certain services that make competition nearly impossible feasibly with out having the Government run the intermediary system.

    Disagree on keyboards, kind of agree on mice.

    However, have you used a Magic Track Pad? Those things are phenomenal. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I really do not enjoy the idea of either recharging batteries all the time or throwing out batteries.

    Apple input devices are very VERY hit or miss. The pro mouse? Awesome. Mighty Mouse? Sucky after the ball gets gunked up for the thousandth time and won't roll right(Generally above average before that happens though).

    I'd rather have though, a stock Apple keyboard than a stock Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc. keyboard. Those BLOW. Even G1 iMac keyboards were well ahead of the curve and as far as I'm concerned, no one's trying to catch up.

    hex and square aren't tamper resistant. Yes, it's designed to keep people out, but, if they were really out to keep people completely out and completely removed from the device they wouldn't use screws, they'd use rivets or welding solder.

    It's not like this type of screw bit is any new. It's just not the same as everyone else. Nintendo uses those stupid fucking triwing bits that I rarely see anywhere but other Nintendo products.

    (and the Neo Geo Pocket Color. But that's such a niche item, it's not even worth mentioning.)

    Refurbishable.

    When my original iPhone 2G started to have a smattering of dead pixels, they put in a new screen. Same phone, new screen.

    if the PCB goes though, that's a different story. it's not that they're meant to be disposable, it's that troubleshooting and repairing boards that complex is a giant mess and probably not worth the cost.

    At the sizes that they're pumping out those screws, they may be finding out that repair techs are stripping those screws. Pentalobular screws may be more strip resistant.

    H264 decoding is a one time payment. If google decides to start fucking with webm licesning then we are fucked if we go to webm.

    Otoh. The h264 codec is so encumbered with everyone else fighting it that open source developers are going to skate by and only hardware vendors are going to pay h264 costs. Software other than big names like adobe and apple are going to pay.

    You mean like OSX?

    The argument that a vast majority of non-techie users are flocking to android because it's open and using Linux doesn't hold water. Google, well, Android Inc., went with Linux. Android just happens to be free as in beer to the OEMs. Which is possible with a BSD derivative too.

    A techie high school friend and my not so tech oriented boss both own HTC EVO devices.

    The reason why they buy these phones is that they work better than windows mobile or blackberry. Basically. They're good enough.

    Openness has nothing to do with it.
