The patent holder has to show that they have a clear path to market and intend to develop the technology. They can't just sit there sqatting to prevent competition.
Quakelive is tons of fun. It's basically a port of Q3 arena to the browser. However you can play with your friends quite easily and theres a rudimentary skill matching to help you find people of your skill level.
The requirements are actually quite modest since it's a 10 year old game, but it's very well made.
I also have to say the more people who play quakelive on linux, the more linux support there will be from idsoftware in the future, and they are a top notch game developer. They pay attention to how many linux boxes play quakelive.
BSD is where it is BECAUSE of GNU, Linux and the GPL. It's called "Riding the Coat Tails".
First look at all of the GNU tools which make up BSD. Right there that should tell you that you've got a big blindspot in your argument. BSD is not BSD without GPL.
Now consider this, BSD is also getting a huge boost from the fact that it's so easy to port software from Linux. How much software is written for BSD and then ported to Linux? None. How much software is written for Linux then ported to BSD? All of it.
BSD trolls should go away and post on BSD stories. Leave the non-BSD stories to the big boys.
Texting is not particularly efficient imho. What you mean is it's very low bandwidth and low resource intensive and flexible.
The highest bandwidth way to communicate is face to face, one on one in close proximity and in a suitably quiet environment. There you have multiple parallel high bandwidth streams of communication. There is a high quality voice stream, facial expression recognition, body language, touch, smell and probably more sophisticated lines of communication open. However It can also be the most expensive to set up. It also can require the most preparation attention and sophistication so it probably is the one most likely to cause social anxiety.
The text message is very different. It's low bandwidth as hell and it has a high ping, so I wouldn't say it's efficient in that respect but since it doesn't require undivided attention from either party or the right environment setup or parsing of several high bandwidth streams it's very much less resource intensive. It's also more flexible and lower social risk since than in person. Errors and miss-statements are assumed very often as miss-interpretation by the recipient and can more easily be corrected or taken back.
The phone conversation is somewhat in between the two other examples.
So there are advantages and disadvantages to lots of methods of communication. Is one better than another? Sure for a particular use. Obvious example: Face to face is much better for sexing and text is much better for the break up:>
But does it mean that being good at one makes you poor at another? Probably not. In fact, being good at more modes of communication only widens your social reach and ability.
What amazes me about the ignorance of most people towards the topic is:
That anyone is amazed that teenagers are drawn to a method of communication with lower social anxieties
That people don't see the flexibility of texting
That articles about texting get any sort of readership outside the psychology community. It ain't much more than common sense and it's pretty boring imo. I'm bored right now and my post is quite short.
Making a virus more 'deadly' is usually not very good for the virus. If it's host dies, so does it's habitat. Not to mention the host can no longer really spread it.
How does having the GPL as an option rather than not having it at all inconvenience ANYONE?
Also ANYTHING under the GPL can be forked. Don't be a tool.
The only point you can make is that people might refrain from contributing to the project under the GPL because the company can then use their hard work to profit.
Let's follow your argument for a second. 1. That means that if I want to release a proprietary application using PyQt
Ok so you want to release proprietary.
2. Now, for my application I cannot use the GPL license...Qualcomm
Great! that's what you want from point 1.
3. So when I ship my app as a Windows or GNU/Linux application, I cannot use the GPL. Now, just considering Qt, I can use the LGPL
What!? See point #1. You said you want to release a proprietary app and this is what started the chain of events. You CAN use the GPL if you want. Just drop the Qualcomm stuff. Oh wait.. you say you can't? Maybe that's the real reason you can't GPL, point #2. What exactly is your goal here?
Now, even though the licensing terms are pretty generous, I still have to track all the licensed code I ship - so you just added a bunch of cost to my accounting of program.
Hate to break it to you but you have to do that because (#1) your app is proprietary and so is the (#2)Qualcomm stuff.
Except that I cannot use the LGPL for Qt and use PyQt, as PyQt does not support LGPL.
I think you are mistaken. You can use LGPL for QT because PyQT is GPL and they go together quite well. Again the only reason you can't GPL everything are point #1: Because you don't want to and point #2: because of the OTHER proprietary stuff you're using.
I can see it now. Someone will gain control of the LED functions and splash some geeky internet meme over 250k square miles of roads across the country.
Or some ascii pr0n.
Oh well when you put it like that, how could anybody possibly think that the European Commission overturning laws in England is in any way a loss of sovereignty...
Male and female sexes are a strategy evolved for reproduction. Therefore my definition would be: Is the person capable of bearing children? Do they have the right chromosomes (xx) and organs, IE. ovaries, uterus etc.
Men cannot bear children. Women can. End of story.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that when they injected the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG) into rats suffering spinal cord injuries, the rodents were able to walk again, albeit with a limp.
Isn't it nice that they leave out the part where they break the backs of the animals first. Makes it sound almost like an animal hospital taking in injured creatures and saving them with the food dye.
Seems to me we should be contracting out mobsters as researchers. Because they also just 'happen' to find people who suffer spinal cord injuries.
Got to love the Stallman haters. Must be the definition of not having a life.
"He demands 100% compliance with his growing list of restrictions, or you aren't free. Freedom is not a list of restrictions. In reality, he wants to remove rights, give you a list of restrictions, and do so to protect the interests of developers, protecting their code from being stolen."
"Stallman helped to start a movement that empowers developers by creating a new category of licenses to use for their code, empowers users by granting them express permissions and effectively locks out embrace and extend."
There, I fixed it for ya. Once you wash the smell of B.S. from the original statement it looks quite different.
BTW, every troll who says something stupid when taking a position against Free Software then defends themselves with the argument that they obviously logical and impartial because they 'run linux'.
That is analogous to making ignorant racist remarks and then defending your position by claiming that you "have a black friend".
I've always wondered how much injustice is perpetrated by drug screening on large populations
Phew! For a minute there I thought you were talking about drug screening of professional athletes for performance enhancing drugs. In that case there are so many juicers, it's the false negatives you have to worry about:)
Oh yeah? Well while you're yapping away to your gammy about the weather, I'm trying to download this torrent with a cpr instructional video so I can save the cable guy who just collapsed in front of me. Or I'm trying to share documents from a whistleblower who has proof of US torture on americans who were abducted on american soil.
Fuck you and fuck your voice packets to your gammy about the weather or some cookies and shit.
Who are you to decide that one protocol is more important than another when both are popular and are equally viable ways of sharing important information.
That's the whole point isn't it? Net neutrality is Freedom of Speech and you only curtail that in extreme circumstances or you don't have it. Is it an extreme circumstance when an ISP oversells it's bandwidth? NO.
What about when they just don't like it because it might be competing with their services? Hell No.
Let's not mention the fact that if they're slowing the traffic to around 1% of their advertised speed, they're not just 'prioritizing' speech; They are essentially silencing it. If the difference was voip running uninterrupted but p2p traffic at 90% they might have had an argument.
Even in that case, would you want your shady, monopolising, incompetent, overselling corporation of an ISP to be the one to have the power to regulate speech?
You never know when you are being watched or followed. It would be stupid to commit a crime.
When people in positions of authority start talking this way watch out because here comes big brother.
Fuck, I'm dissapointed in this half-hearted scheme. Why don't you just skip to the endgame and implant every one of your citizens with mood-altering gps tracking chips that transmit constant video and sound feeds of whatever they're seeing and hearing? I'll put money on the table that when the technology for that exists, there will be people in power who want to do it and general public who won't fight it.
I wish we could just hurry up and split species so that those who don't care can turn into HG Wells-like eloitards.
On another note, it doesn't matter that it's a plane, other cities like NY already use those and they're attached to blimps. So I'm sorry to tell this silly mayor that he won't be the first.
I love the daily KOS. The question is why does the CIA need a leftist blog?.
Oh well
The patent holder has to show that they have a clear path to market and intend to develop the technology. They can't just sit there sqatting to prevent competition.
Did you just call everyone who disagrees with you stupid?
I think you did.
Yeah, less lawyers. What a shame.

I guess I can't be typing this from a 2.6.31 kernel then?!?
They just haven't released it yet, it's in beta, they're being slow about it but you can get it from ubuntus repos.

This is why every colony tried unsuccessfully to be completely free of them.

The patent system works really well for physical inventions like if you invent a better pogostick and you want to patent that design.
It works horribly for business plans and software...
Why throw the baby out with the bathwater? Like most things in life, the elegant solution is not as simplistic as your statement.
I can see it now. Someone will gain control of the LED functions and splash some geeky internet meme over 250k square miles of roads across the country.

And their linux drivers still SUCK.
