I'd say learn java if you're a linux freak. If you check out freshmeat.net, you'll see that java is used in 4000 projects while c# is used in 300. So if you want to get on board with an open source project, java is the way to go. Also, since there's a vm for java on linux, it'll make your homework easier to do (if you only use linux boxes).
That's the point. IBM has seen the power of OSS, and has embraced it. It's simply one of the companies that understands what the rest of us have known for years.
And if something unforeseeable happens and open source for some reason couldn't be a potential of money, well it is open, and they could just change the source so that it was a potential for money. Obviously the base is good, and from here on out they can control their own destiny with it, just like every open source programmer out there.
For years, I've wanted something with a deep plot, decent graphics, meaningful characters, and a good music score.
I've had to live with Final Fantasy et al to be the best I could get in this regard. Yes, what I wanted was a TV show on my playstation. If you ever look at what it takes to make a TV show and make it work, you'll see you can't just blow millions on it and make it, the competition is too fierce, especially in the japanese animated market. But there is a great niche market in video games for this type of thing.
Yeah, if you go into XS thinking you are going to be doing more than playing an interactive philosophical book, you will be bored out of your mind. But how could you NOT know that this would happen, considering every review out there pastes this fact all over the place.
No, XS isn't boring, it's a book, and a pretty decent one at that. Treat it any different, and you'll be disappointed.
If you'll notice, the two languages he goes on about are scripting languages, basically the VB of linux (I'm sorry portage, I don't really mean that as an insult). So what does a hacker do to hack up small programs for personal use? The easiest and fastest tool there is.
However, those needs aren't a companies needs. Writing graphics intensive programs in Perl is probably not a good idea, and writing a text parser in C probably isn't. As for java, it's one of the primary languages for easy interface with databases. And most companies are founded around data (held in databases) so of course something as robust and supported as Java is going to be used.
He's right about a lot of the social problems in how hackers are currently dealt with, though. The worst thing you can do to a good one is bug the crap out of him to the point that he can't get his train of thought started, much less followed through.
I think a large reason for this is that Xenosaga is merely episode 1 of 6, and if you consider a deep, good read with as many subplots as XS has, reading 1/6th of it out loud would take about as long as XS takes to play. I think that they will go much farther with the philosophical implications and religious overtones in the next games.
BTW, Xenogears is right around game 5 in a series of 6, so you actually get to watch the creationism that XG's plot/meaning is based on happen in the other XS games.
One major gripe I have about both GC and Xbox is the definitive lack of RPG's. Sure GC has it's tried and true Zelda, but that was a late comer game, and Xbox titles concentrate far more on Sports/Action/Fighing genres than RPG. The most definitive company representing this is Squaresoft, who only of late are coming back to Nintendo with FFCC. Not only that, but through Sony, I can play not only FFX, but virtually every final fantasy game every created, as well as numerous other great classics that on lazy afternoons I feel like revisiting, and I only need one console to do this with. If you go nintendo, I need 4 different consoles to play games from wayback, or I need to go search for roms (which is a pain for N64). Now with the advent of Monolithsoft (breakoffs from Square) creating the Xenosaga series and furthering the Chrono line only for PS2, it seems that things are going to stay this way. XBox does great with American companies, and Nintendo does great with First party games, but the only console I've seen that mature 3rd party japanese game companies develope for is Sony's. It's the games that make the console, and in the RPG genre, Sony is the only real option. Until that changes, or my budget does, Sony is where I stay.
A lot of games I'd like to see don't date as far back as some of the previously mentioned, but are based on the NES and SNES. Games like Final Fantasy 4 (2 US) had what I still think is a great plot, but it suffered due to the poor translation and "Americanization" that Japanese video game makers thought we needed.
Or maybe just great games that never made it over here. Things like Fire Emblem (Roy and Marth from Smash Brothers) and their ilk.
Maybe some company could come out that only does remakes with better translations for old school international video games.
It's not about code, it's about people. Linus is a role model, a figure, a picture people can put in their minds when they think of linux (and a damn good one too). People need something to look up to, someone who can lead them. True democracy fails when the number of people get so large precisely because people spend too much time looking for (arguing over?) direction and not enough time going in it.
It doesn't matter anymore who's code is in it on the public side of things. But to his credit, Linus does not take advantage of pretty much anyone.
Well, maybe not exact same, but currently I am a college student working for my BSCS from a technical school. They have a 5 year masters program, and given the current market, I can see where that might be the wise move. However, I have heard some things that give me pause, mainly that people with a masters fresh out of college don't get the jobs.
The reasoning is that a masters demands more money, after all, I've been to college for longer and know more. However, I don't have the work experience to compete with other people who have recently gotten their masters (after being in industry for 10 years). Also, it sounds like I will get the same job with a masters degree that I'll get with a BS unless I go into some academic area (like research).
I don't know how many of these apply to you, but I know I'll take a good hard look at the market next spring and decide whether I should stay in school for another year.
WHAT?! Where's the spoiler alert?!?! Edward gets WHAT?! Man, I just got edward, he's like, the best player ever, and you are telling me he gets kicked out?! AND SOON?!
Sigh, I hate people who ruin video games, next thing you'll tell me is that tifa, maybe even aeris, is gonna die or something.
This has to be the best series I've ever read, and I stand by them always. GRRM's site points to the 4th one coming along, hopefully by fall *crosses fingers*. But the feeling I get from the series is that he planned it as a trilogy, and had an in depth plan for the whole series, and things just started taking too long. You can tell this by the fact that the prologue in the first book doesn't even begin to be realized until midway through the third book. It's simply amazing how the 3 books tie together, as if they are just one huge book that he had to release separately or else we'd have a 3000 bage novel no one would read.
Definitely the cream of the crop as far as fantasy goes.
I think the really critical part of WCIII was the multiplayer, and a lot of it was built upon the fact that a lot of people would play it. Just like FPS's (for the most part) are built on the story of Marine meets aliens, Aliens try to kill marine, Marine kills all aliens. It's the multiplayer that these games are really built for. After all, there's only so much you can do with the ingame AI.
I think the only problem with this new EQ is the fact that anyone who owns WCIII won't really care, because they haven't improved upon any part of the game. It'll be like Street Fighter EX3, if you own anything else remotely close to it, don't bother. This means not as many people will be online, which means not as much fun and new challenges.
Though I do agree, C&C had awesome single player:)
T&T, well.... Let's just say on my commodore 128 when I was around 6 years old, I would throw myself off of levels on that game, shouting out loud "JUMP FOR JOY" and "LEAP FOR LUMBER!!!" I never knew where I got that one from... I played that game ALL the time, marking my first addiction (and then came some Barbie Commodore game, but I don't think I wanna go into that).
And FF2...well...FF2 was the first game I ever got emotional about. I remember my brother and I practically screaming with happiness when Rydia shows up to kick some Golbez ass.

GAH!

Yeah, that's what I did. Met her on a MUD actually :P, and now we move on to MMO's and whatnot and are both nice and geeky.
:P
Ah yes...I believe normal people do things like take walks, for us it's "maybe we can fit another mission in before bedtime!"
I feel so pathetic...and yet wonderful.
So my suggestion to the slashdot crowd is to meet girls ON the games...but then...they aren't always girls
All I have to say is:
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children
Check it out. Looks to be only dvd, but still a continuation of FF7 in movie form. And the trailers thus far released look really good.
Yeah, and someone else had the same great idea:
a bit of a google search turns up this.

Neo just chose to save Trinity instead of rebooting the matr...
