We're not bitching any more than steel workers or any other group of workers. There are extensive laws protecting things like steel. The problem with IT is that we're too stupid to form a union and have some real lobbying power like our blue collar counterparts have been doing for years. I don't know if you've noticed, but union jobs have good pay, good benefits, and quite often a pension. And let's not forget about the handy laws helping their jobs stay in this country.

The big problem is people *assuming* everyone has MS-Word, and using it's proprietary format to exchange information by default.

It's a problem for Microsoft's competitors and for FOSS zealots, but not for the rest of us. I don't communicate with a single person that doesn't have MS Word (or at least WordPad). Let's not forget that if you are running Linux, you have made a choice to use something that has different features and limitations than the software that 90+% of the world uses. It is not the obligation of the vast majority to facilitate the minority - it is the other way around.

For general distribution, or to unknown recipients, you should send in something that is standard (and to be standard, it needs to be a documented format, 'DOC' fails that requirement) plain ascii text works, or if for some reason you need to control the appearance, postscript or PDF.

Plain text does not allow formatting, and PDF does not allow editing.

    1. The entire concept of a 'Word Processor' is stupid - http://www.ecn.wfu.edu/~cottrell/wp.html

That entire article was written on the basis of the fact that most people incorrectly use word processors! You can do exactly what the author is describing in Microsoft Word, and it is a hell of a lot easier than Tex. As you are typing your document, you simply mark things with Heading 1, etc (create new styles as you need them). When you're done "composing", then edit the styles such that your document is rendered as you want it to be.

As for the argument that the recipient of your document will need to have the same program you composed it in, I fail to see how Tex is better. If I sent my Dad a Tex document, he'd be pissed off that he had to read all of that \section{} crap along with the text, because we both know he isn't going to have anything that will render Tex.

Yes, I don't get why PDAs keep coming out without a keyboard. It makes them worthless.

The Blackberry does email better than anything out there. It's exactly how you would want it to work. I don't get why no one else does this. My company has about 30 Blackberries for various employees. We run the BB server, it hooks into Exchange, and it's like having a live client to the Exchange server. Why not rig the machines? We go about screwing with the election in every other possible way as well. Forgive me, but I believe that our elections are one of the most embarassing things about this country. Aside from hanging chads, it's all a farce.

In Ohio, the Republicans are trying to put white lawyers into predominately black areas to "make sure" their voter registrations are valid.

In many states, the Democrats were trying hard to get Ralph Nader off the ballots despite his signature collection.

All over, Republicans and Democrats are frantically trying to register indigents and get them to vote for their guy.

Republicans and Democrats are paying millions to air ads that come as close as possible to lying about the opposition without actually lying.

In some state, the Democrats went to court to say that a Catholic bishop was tampering with the election because he said "you're not a Catholic if you vote for Kerry". Dude may be a crackpot, but that's about it.

Lawyers on both sides are poised to rush into court to contest the aspects of the vote that they feel best help themselves.

Why can't we just have an open, honest election? If we are the shining example to the world, where's the shine? We complain every four years about low voter turnout, but system is disenfranchising people. Nobody makes me want to vote for them. They all make me want them to be removed from power, but I've nobody left to replace them with.

How can you even ask that question? Badnarik and Cobb are two candidates with real platforms and real goals, and they deserve to be heard in the same way that President Bush and Senator Kerry are being heard.

All Cobb and Badnarik did was to further convince the average American that they are nuts. They need to start convincing the average American that they are legitimate candidates with legitimate platforms. The problem is that both the candidates and people like you don't realize that this was not helpful. You're all too extreme for the average American, and you keep proving it over and over again. You'll never get credibility or votes if you keep it up.

Yes, they should have been in the debates, but that is not relevant to whether or not they should have pulled this stunt. These guys need to learn how to play with the pros. So far, the pros are smoking them. Third parties can get into the debates - Ross Perot did it.
