Suppressing the economy? Let's see, coal is on government welfare to keep going, you had to bail out all the old auto manufacturers but Tesla made you a nice return on your investment, and renewables are a massive and rapidly growing new source of jobs and GDP.

Except that coal is more expensive - even if you pay less per kWh at best you are just pushing the cost onto someone else's lungs.

Trying to use India and China as an excuse is ridiculous. They are doing massive amounts to reduce their output, and if 2.5 billion people all adopted your lifestyle you would be completely screwed. China's emissions per capita are half of yours.

Before pointing your finger in an accusatory manner, perhaps you should consider what their targets are first.

China and India are still on the up side of the curve, no one expects them to be decreasing yet. They expect them to be slowing the rate of increase, which they are.

Remember all that whining about how emissions targets would force the US back to pre-industrial levels of civilization? That's the reason why China and India aren't expected to immediately halt their increasing output.

And despite all that they are still at just a fraction of the per capita emissions of the US anyway, around half.

The comments on stories about China are always the same.

    - The Chinese are dishonourable, screwing foreigners over is part of their culture!
    - All Chinese tech is stolen, they have spies in the US pretending to be workers!
    - All Chinese tech has government mandated backdoors and spies on you!
    - China's human rights record means we should have nothing to do with them!*

    * You can still buy an iPhone though, for some reason that's fine.

That's going to backfire in the next year or two. The Chinese have realized this is a big vulnerability and resolved to build the next generation of cellular hardware in China, using Chinese developed tech implementing Chinese patents.

Essentially the US just signalled to the rest of the world not to rely on US tech exports. China was already looking to dominate 5G, or at the very least make sure that it could supply all the necessary parts domestically.

  6. If you developed man boobs within a week you should get that checked out by a doctor. Seriously, normally men don't develop man boobs in a week from eating a heavy soy diet. Something else is going on.

  7. Marie Kondo is an absolute genius. Her books are well worth a read.

  8. You don't have to eat exclusively Impossible Burgers, you can consume them as part of a balanced diet.

Look, I'm sure you can find some idiot online suggesting you eat a 100% soy diet, but let's not judge everything by the biggest idiot who happens to like it.

  9. This myth comes from a study done in the 30s on sheep. From there it turned into the great Soyboy panic of 2018.

Basically it's nonsense, the stuff in soy has no effect on human males manliness or testosterone levels or man-boobs.

  11. Wow, +5 insightful down to 0 troll in the space of a few hours.

This stuff really triggers the snowflakes, huh? They get really angry and piss away all their mod points trying to silence anything that hurts their beloved victim narrative.

  12. Thanks man, that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me all year.

Yeah, I think as long as you were not carrying a megaphone at the time they couldn't keep you out... How that translates into the online world after you get banned for something isn't clear.

  14. You got me. What kind of asshat brings FACTS into these things?

  15. I agree entirely. I've been doing the KonMari method and it's been great. I feel a lot better with less stuff around, and what I do have tidied away.

  16. And in why the down votes too. DO NOT CONTRADICT THE NARRATIVE!

It's impossible to have a decent debate on Slashdot any more.

  17. From TFA:

The problem, as critics pointed out, is that Cogent Social Sciences was not a leading gender studies journal, or even a reputable academic outlet at all. . Itâ(TM)s an extremely low-quality publication that charges a $625 fee to publish. Indeed, when Lindsay and Boghossian tried to submit âoeThe Conceptual Penisâ to an actual journal of gender studies, NORMA, it was rejected.

And when he finally managed to get 7 out of 20 through, he needed both funding and 90 hour weeks working on it:

He secured funding from a group of donors whose names he would not reveal to spend, in his words, âoe90 hours a weekâ on this project.

So if anything he proved that actually fooling these guys is two full time jobs and considerable expense, all to make a political point about what he refers to as "grievance studies". Speaking of rigorous application of the scientific method, does that sound like it?

As I already said, if they banned you from the mall for taking a dump on the floor or something, your 1st amendment rights aren't going to get you back in even if a politician is there.

You can't troll Trump all you want, your rights don't extend to entering the Oval Office with a megaphone whenever you please. The courts are currently deciding where the boundaries are, and it seems that his Twitter account and some other pages may qualify as public spaces. Even then, Twitter can still ban you for ToS violations.

  19. It's interesting that the guy being sanctioned here is making an obviously bad faith argument that is easily debunked, in order to affect social change and remodel the academic world as he sees fit. Seemingly the very definition of an SJW... But apparently the unwritten rule is that they can't have conservative views.

  20. This is like why we need to study the cosmos or what is the point of food science now we know pretty much all there is to know about cooking.

Actually I take that back, it's worse. It's basically saying that because you don't know much about these subjects they can't be worth thinking about.

  21. That quote explains why he is being punished now. His attack was politically motivated, made in bad faith.

It's well known that this problem affects all subjects, with low quality journals that publish literally anything they get sent without even reading the papers first. Yet he chose to focus on just one or two subjects that he has a personal dislike of, and wilfully ignores all the others with exactly the same problem to make his ridiculous claims.

  22. A few years back the "International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology" published a paper that was nothing but "get me off your fucking mailing list" repeated over and over again.

    https://www.vox.com/2014/11/21...

The barrier to entry to these journals is apparently "can email a Word document".

  23. More important than the volume is the cost. The cost of storing it, the cost of finding the mail you want.

Storage is cheap. Finding stuff depends on the quality of your search system, or how much time you invest in organizing.

Unlike physical clutter, digital clutter doesn't necessarily mean you can't find what you want near the bottom of the pile.

  24. Re:"Violated the First Amendment Free Speech Right on Politicians Cannot Block Social Media Foes, US Appeals Court Rules (reuters.com) · · Score: 1

Try going to a physical public forum with a tin of red paint, a megaphone and an inflatable sex doll (inflated). See if your 1st Amendment rights stop them booting you out of the mall.

The 1st doesn't mean you have an unlimited right to troll as much as you want, it just gives you a great deal of leeway before that line is crossed.

  25. The time you save with easier updates just gets spent sorting out other stuff. It really depends on the apps you use as well, for example Kicad seems to be better on Linux (side-by-side install is easier) but on the other hand setting up a decent AVR development environment is an annoying, manual process.

In the end it probably comes down to which OS you are more familiar with, rather than either being much better than the other. They both have their frustrations and strengths.
