    "small government" is just a b.s. mantra to support reduced taxes and regulations. Its proponents generally advocate a big, intrusive government, so long as the haves can have and do whatever they want.

    I suspect that sometime between election day and inauguration day a small committee sits down with the president elect and explains to them that they will be allowed use the turn signal and the horn, but not the steering wheel or the pedals.

    Back in the day some video card manufacturer got caught switching to cheat mode when standard benchmarking tests were detected. I wonder if anyone ever found out what level(s) that decision came from and how far the knowledge extended.

    You'd have to have a *lot* of programmers to be checking in millions of lines of code every minute.

    And I'm not sure *any* rate of check-ins would justify not using a version control system.

    There are other hard things we could consider doing, such as eliminating carbon emissions are establishing peace in the Middle East.

    Arguably both much harder than a mere trip to Mars, but IMO much more valuable to the human race as well.

    But thhe biggest question, IMO, is WTF should we be investing money into a trip to Mars, when according to most people and demagogues we can't even afford our current spending needs and habits.

    I remember an occasion back when phones were first becoming popular, when I was at a hamburger stand and there were five girls in a nearby booth. Four of them were talking on the phone, and the other was sitting looking incredibly bored. It really struck me at the time - why go out with friends and spend the time yakking on the phone?

    I read recently that the Allies made a policy of not telling about the decryption until long after the war, apparently so everyone would think we won by valor rather than by cheating. But what's (perversely) funny is that the UK rounded up as many machines as they could and "donated" them to third- world countries so that they, too, could enjoy the benefits of strong encryption.
