XML data for anything complex could be very very large
You can use XML compression to reduce the size of the models. One of the great advantages of XML is there is a vast number of tools to validate/parse/create/etc for most platforms, so developers can focus on writing the rendering code without having to worry too much about the details of the file format
Acording to the the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, hacker means:

Here are some quotes for anyone claiming that America was formed on Christian principles:(copy/paste from here)
"I have examined all the known superstitions of the Word, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the world...
The clergy converted the simple teachings of Jesus into an engine for enslaving mankind... to filch wealth and power to themselves. [They], in fact, constitute the real Anti-Christ."
Thomas Jefferson
"The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes; fools and hypocrites. To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical."
Thomas Jefferson
"Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins... and you will have sins in abundance. I would not dare to dishonor my Creator's name by [attaching] it to this filthy book [the Bible]."
Thomas Paine
"For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate error so long as reason is free to combat it."
Thomas Jefferson
"It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God."
Thomas Jefferson
"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear."
Thomas Jefferson
"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the Word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind."
Thomas Paine
"I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church."
Thomas Paine
"My country is the world, and my religion is to do good."
Thomas Paine
"Let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religions."
George Washington
"Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought most to be deprecated. I was in hopes that the enlightened and liberal policy, which has marked the present age, would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society."
George Washington, letter to Edward Newenham, October 20, 1792; from George Seldes, ed., The Great Quotations, Secaucus, New Jersey: Citadel Press, 1983, p. 726]
"There is nothing which can better deserve our patronage than the promotion of science and literature. Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness."
George Washington, address to Congress, 8 January, 1790
"Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcila
Well, remember that many companies will license the engine once it's done and if you want to compete in that market you need to have the best technology.
Also large companies rely on fast product releases to cover the operations costs. ID seems like a small company that can afford long times between releases as long as the quality of the product warrants huge sales.
They simply have a different business model than other game companies.
If you were to send player information to the clients only when it's visible, you would need to do some sort of clipping on the server side and you will run into scalability problems.
Sadly until technology is at the point where determining visibility of entities on the server side is a feasible operation, we are stuck with the current model.
Well, the WIN32 rendering API is quite outdated, you will notice that if you try to develop anything that is rendering intensive (something like CorelDraw or Photoshop).
If this change means that developers can use an improved API, that means you will get better UI.
Linus is responsible for his tree, he has the authority to do anything he pleases with it and face the consequences of his good/bad choices. When someone submits a change to his tree, he is still responsible for that change so he has to be very careful about what gets in.
The ball analogy is flawed, he doesn't have the only ball in the game. I think a team coach is a better analogy, he wants to make the team succeed so he chooses the players and strategies to the best of his abilities for the benefit of the game he is playing.
Criticizing leaders is so easy. Step up and make a difference, otherwise you bring nothing positive to the table.
Remembers when Numega had a trial version of SoftIce(kernel mode debugger) available for download?
Warez groups used it a LOT to remove copy protection from games/apps/etc, so the first think they did whith it after they downloaded it was to alter the SoftIce binaries to get rid of the expiration date...using SoftIce itself to find the places where the checks were being made.
It means that the government cannot have a stance on religion other than neutrality, it's none of the government's business to promote or censor any kind of religious movement whether established or trying to establish. It means that the government as an entity should have no influence to the acceptance or rejection on any religious beliefs.
It grants individuals and organizations total freedom in promoting or censoring any religious beliefs using legal means as long as such effort is not being sponsored by public funds.

[Thomas Jefferson, letter to his nephew, Peter Carr]
"My parents had early given me religious impressions, and brought me through my childhood piously in the dissenting [puritan] way. But I was scarce fifteen, when, after doubting by turns of several points, as I found them disputed in the different books I read, I began to doubt of Revelation itself. Some books against Deism fell into my hands; they were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyle's lectures. [Robert Boyle (1627-1691) was a British physicist who endowed the Boyle Lectures for defense of Christianity.] It happened that they wrought an effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a thorough deist."
[Benjamin Franklin, "Autobiography,"p.66 as published in The American Tradition in Literature, seventh edition (short), McGraw-Hill,p.180]
"It is much to be lamented that a man of Franklin's general good character and great influence should have been an unbeliever in Christianity, and also have done as much as he did to make others unbelievers."
[Priestley's Autobiography, p. 60, on Benjamin Franklin]
"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole carloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity."
"And the name of the religion that is being promoted by the pledge of alliegence is? Oh, it's not a particular religion but merely a promotion of faith in general? Why that would mean it's constitutional!"
In this case is not a specific religion but the group of monotheists religions that call the one deity "God". There are many people that believe in religions with a number of deities, in the case of Hindu religions you will find deities such as Shiva, Kali, Gamesh, etc.
Having government sponsored schools (in private schools promoting any particular religion is fair game) in which the children have to repeat the name of a deity every single day is considered inappropriate in a country in which the constitution prevents the government for favoring/censoring a religion or a group of religions.
How would you feel as a Christian/Jew/etc. If instead of "God" it was "Allah" or "Brahma"?
Make sure to re-route the plasma conduits through auxiliary power. Othewrise the load might damage the life-support systems on decks eight and nine.

As long as they don't present evidence to back up that statement they have zero credibility.
And by the way, if you haven't read the article it goes something like this:
