I have a good job, and do live in the Western world. Still I can't ignore what is wrong with this society. Our wealth is at the cost of others, it will always stay like this when we keep on pushing down the poor and say they should work harder.
It's very easy to judge from a luxurious armchair.
Anyway, I think this discussion is getting way off-topic, and I don't want to pick a fight (unlike what some moderators tend to believe).
Let's just say you're right, and I'm wrong, nkay;-)
[sarcasm] good to see someone still believing in free market economy... [/sarcasm]
WARNING only read below if you're interested in this OT discussion
do you *really* believe poor people get jobs because bigger planes are being built?
of course *nobody* needs a bigger plane, the fastest computer, etc. i'm shocked that this idea eases your mind without ever asking yourself whether the propaganda you get fed is actually true.
just show me the poor people who get better from the outsourcing of the production of computer parts (or anything, like jeans, furniture, etc). they are being exploited for lower wages than you could imagine, and they are left no other option.
free market economy only works within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed "free world". this does not include the countries outside this "free world" where people *are* poor and exploited by the "free world". think of this next time you buy one of your upgrades, levis, or ikea furniture.
disclaimer: i sincerely apologize for this off-topic rant. mod me down if you wish.
I will not say "this is 133t" about a huge unneccesary airplane, because I think it is a waste of money that could be spent better elsewhere. Therefore I am modded -1:flamebait?
I don't care about the -1, prolly someone will find this comment inflammatory as well... I was genuinly expressing my feelings on the subject...
I guess I'll never understand the logic of this place
so this is why my eyes and my dick hurt at the same time after an intensive evening of downloading all kinds-o-stuff from the web?
seriously, what's so new about this study. we all knew already that your eyes start hurting when watching a monitor for too long... or is that something that distinguishes a real nerd from the avergae joe computer user: the ability to withstand prolongued exposure to CRTs...
well it starts somewhat faster on my duron 900, but it's nothing compared to the startup time of old netscape (4.7x). of course, it renders the pages much better!
like galeon, if this thing will introduce more features, it will slow down even a bit more.
anyway, more browser alternatives are a good thing IMHO, and i like the simplicity of phoenix a lot. different people have diferent taste, and i'm fine with that, as long as the browser displays pages correctly...
formally this attempt at humor (though successful) is wrong. sperm serves DNA to the egg. if we would follow the reasoning of the author of the parent comment, sperm could be considered a server when single, and a client when fused to the egg. (errmmmm.....)
let's ignore the complication that the sperm cell merges with the egg cell. a more accurate description of sperm is that it's comparable to an ethernet package in an overcrowded, badly configured, collision plagued ethernet network, where millions of packages try to reach a host and only one finally reaches its destination.
brrr, how horribly inefficient nature is compared to computers;-)
this may be interesting for the (rare?) molecular biologists who visit/.
i heard once about a guy who had made software to represent protein sequences in a "musical" way. one could find sequence similarities by listening to the "music" produced by different proteins, to presumably find proteins that share common properties.

i don't think it would be very difficult to install the passport implementation on any other distribution. essentially RH doesn't differ that much from other "modern" distributions.
the problem is of course certification. if passport is only certified to work on RH linux, other distributions might be able to run it, but only passport servers running on RH linux will be accepted as being valid passport servers. just a thought...
maybe it's a smart move by MS to allow only passport on one specific linux vendor. suppose passport becomes the primary way to identify yourself on the net (*shiver*), it will enable MS to use their embrace & strangle policy on RH, effectively killing "commercial linux".
maybe they're just being ignorant though, thinking RH = linux. an often made mistake;-)
i don't remember how to unset this, but there's a way to avoid the system from checking the mount-count (or whatever its called) by simply editing some settings file.
Also annoying was the 'Live at Leeds' debacle: First there was a version for CD, then a version with extra tracks (the remaster), then a deluxe double CD version.
same here. ziggy stardust was 1st released, the re-mastered and released, and now this.

i am a biologist, and many researchers in my group use macs. they are all very smart people. most of them would be perfectly capable of running a linux system. but: they are just not interested.
>Get yourself a big flat, L-shaped desk (position > yourself in the corner as NanoGator says), push > your keyboard out to arms length, recline your > chair, lean back
that's not a good idea (leaning back). sitting behind a desk on a classic type chair is most relaxing (and thus best) when your knees, hips, and elbow joints are al in an angle of approximately 90 degrees.
(disclaimer) i've been told this by an ergonomics expert, so it's as close an approximation to the truth i can give you
i think gelpads are very bad. the moment i started using them my arms started to hurt so they can't be good (for me at least).
i guess it's the pressure that's applied on your wrist that might partially cut off the blood supply or something. anyway, leaning on a gelpad forces your wrists in a bent position (upwards) while typing, which is not good (as i've been told by an ergonomics expert).
the only thing that does prevent rsi (which is more than just carpal tunnel syndrome btw) is pausing. don't work hours in a row behind keyboard -)
try rephrasing your query: i typed 'dvd player linux' (quite obvious i think), and i get ogle, xine, and mplayer within the first 7 hits.
> Anyway, I can empathize - with the possibility of > the MPAA hunting down Linux DVD developers, I > wouldn't write DVD software, especially since I > live in the US.
i know that writing linux dvd players can cause legal problems, which is why i didn't suggest that to the original poster. i suggested working on the x-configurator, which was one of the original posters' criticisms towards xfree.
well... (at the risk of being modded down even more) what is the point of this remark? the original post was critical about setting up x and dvd playing under linux. considering the possibility that he does have "difficult" hardware (support for my hardware is not complete in x either: voodoo5 5500) only weakens his argumentation. just because it doesn't work in a *very* specific situation, doesn't mean that the configuration is difficult perse.
it seems i need to rephrase my criticism overhere, since my original post was modded flamebait twice. i was just trying to point out that the original poster was saying that configuration was difficult, while he is an expert on the subject (i suppose so at least since he calls himself an unix systems programmer), after which he questions the use for multi-head configuration.
failing to see the use of a feature just because you have no use for it is not a good argument IMHO. if that's flamebait, someone please explain me why.
or maybe it's just my sig that makes people assume i'm flaming;-)
we know there are caveats in the xfree86 distribution. you're an experienced unix systems programmer, so why don't you devote some time to write a good X-configurator (since according to you it is as easy as getting the pci ID of the card, etc:-\). help the world configure x, you're obviously someone who can do it.
furthermore, given the fact that you are a unix system programmer, i find it very strange that it takes you 3 days to set up dvd playback on your linux box, whereas it took me 2hours max. using google i found & compiled mplayer. libdvdcss, libdvdread (or something), compiled, and ran it. the only thing is that sound & image are slightly out of sync, which can be annoying sometimes. so indeed, it's not perfect.
q3a took me even less time to setup, it's an installer for christs' sake. all i needed to do is set the right permissions to the/dev/dri/card0 (or whatever), and it ran perfectly fine.
with regard to multi-head configurations: some people do use that, the fact that you don't doesn't mean it's not useful to others. the same applies to the huge amount of comments in the generated configfile, it allowed me to learn howto set up a decent config file without ever having to consult a howto. you might not like extensive comments, but others do.
in summary: i find solutions much faster than you (a unix systems programmer) do, and i can't even code beyond simple javascript... from this i thing we can conclude that you need to reconsider the effectivity of your troubleshooting methodology;-)
(no that's not flamebait) and, if you're trolling, this is a good one since it invoked such a elaborate response from me. in that case: cheers!
"Shut up and goto hell"
talk about flamebait...
just marked you as "friend". good to see others with some sense of reality

... how many poor people could eat a year with $260m.
perosnally, i don't see the benefit of a huge plane like this. somebody convince me.
hey, why do you think you easily get relevant hits when you look for a problem that isn't covered in the Visual Studio .Net help files (or whatever)?
;-)
maybe more people were looking for it? maybe google is designed to give you hits that were ofetn linked and therefore more relevant?
it's like saying camels are brown, and therefore it's dry in the desert...
PS. I'm as anti-M$ as can be, but don't resort to their style of argumentation. pride stops me from doing so

you could also opt for not rebooting so often
