Intel i7 950 @ 3.06Mhz EVGA X58 FTW3 12GB RAM 120GB SSD PCIe card (it's an add-in card that has 2 60GB drives in raid 0) 2 x 1TB WD Green's in Raid 0 nvidia 570GTX - not upgrading this anytime soon, that thing has a 320bit memory bus, making the animations nice and smooth. Generic optical drive 27" monitor, and a 23"secondary monitor, both on adjustable swivel arms Azio mechanical keyboard and mouse (because I can put the num pad on the left) Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers
Reason for this config? bought it used 2 years ago from a friend, and it suited my purpose just fine. Main use: Playing WoW, streaming music. As long as it can run WoW decently, I don't see a need to upgrade.
My WRT54GL wasn't keeping up either with DD-WRT. Tried Tomato, but it just didn't do the trick for me. I tried the Linksys E3000 model, but my throughput went down by 100K/s. I swapped that out for the Asus RT-N56U and my throughput has never been better! Stock firmware is sufficient, and it has most of the features I wanted. Only missing feature was dns-o-matic support. QoS support is detailed enough for my needs (DNS, then VPN, then gaming, then everything else).
I know that custom firmwares typically let you do more, but I'm quite happy with the stock firmware on this model, for now at least. Still have to try the UPnP feature though.
That the universe is a big giant plasma ball that hasn't been played with in a while... so what happens when someone plugs us back in and touches the glass again?
No spinner? tha'ts half the fun of playing the game! It's the anticipation that gets you going. that, and arguing about what number it's on when the neelde gets stuck right on the little plastic piece between 2 numbers. how much fun would games be if you just pushed a button and a number was randomly generated in under a second? The popping dome that made the game Trouble famous doesn't count - that has a cool popping sound, and the dice rattles in the dome too, producing an addictive effect... or am I the only one around here who appreciates having to wait a few seconds for results? C'mon... who hasn't just held down the darn trouble bubble an extra second or two before releasing it? Don't be shy!
I hope they're not the same ones that make the Dell and Apple laptops explode. Imagine driving at highway speeds when your car spontaneously combusts 8O
Personally, I'm a cheap SOB. For me, it's all about entertainment value for my dollar. I've got a PS2, which I love, and I've been scouring ebgames and microplay's bargain bin for ages - I don't have time to sit down and play for hours on end, and I certainly don't want to pay $50-90 for a game, never mind $500+ for a gaming console. I can wait a year (or two) to play the 'latest, best game yet', simply because it will still be good two years from now.
There's more to a good game than good graphics. Look at Nethack @
So I think I'll be skipping this upcoming generation of consoles, at least until I can buy a refurbished unit at significant savings, and there are $20 baragain-bin games.
I've tried it in the past. The response is always "That's the way we do thing shere. If you don't like it, you can leave." Every business that I worked for in Canada seems to have that attitude.
Does anybody have any ideas on fighting for your rights while still maintaining a relatively good relationship with your employer?
I have no problem with a rare meeting that for whatever reason has to be done after-hours... But when you're told that it's a matter of company survival that you attend this unpaid after-hours meeting, on a boat no less, only to find out after you've cast off that the whole thing was just to announce a new HR drive to get more hires, I think they've crossed the line.
Is it just me? I thought that frats were exclusivfely anti-IT. Back in the day when I was in college, the whole idea of an IT, a.k.a. 'Geek' frat was just against everything the comp.sci kids stood for. We stood for individuality, not conformity. We made fun of the frat people to no end. And we never felt we had to be part of a bigger group just to have a party and get wasted and/or lucky (yes, on the rare occasion, it did happen!!!)
Today however, there are enough professional associations around if you want to feel part of a bigger community... get your MCSE if you like... then you'll be unique, just like everybody else;)
Now what I want to discuss, is how come there aren't any IT-centric unions? IT folk tend to work long hours and we don't necessarily get paid for it either, as my former boss said, "it's expected that you put in 60-80 hours a week and get paid for 40". That was one of the reasons that he's now my 'former' boss. But I digress...
Ghz, not Mhz. doh!

Can anybody recommend some FOSS or at least free-as-in-beer equivalents?

"If you want to know my works... Pick up a good science book!" - God
This must be a really old quote, especially since God had supposedly disappeared into a puff of logic.
duh!
How about back home safely once the mission's done?!?
