What can I say, google has always been our biggest fan next to myself of course and the 3 friends that read the site back when I actually had time to update it.
I know here in Western Canada, where Telus is the only telco, who also happens to own the bulk of the fibre , it does not matter what company you get ADSL service through as it is all run off the telco's equipment and simply resold to the customer under a different name (Telus is nice enough to offer an extremely restrictive/expensive package). I do know however that most ISP's do NOT run PPPoE (using a Redback SMS box)or any other sort of authentication. I know the system well enough to know that not only can my ISP NOT track my bandwidth each month, but I also have my choice of 253 IP's within my subnet (that of course excludes the gateway but includes any user not connected when I decide to go IP hoping). This make it EXTREMELY easy for me to hide, in fact it is not even much of a challenge. I can't speak for everywhere, but I can name at least 3 local ISPs who function the same way, and it is safe to say at least a few people of ill repute have figured this out.
because there was a SERIOUS lack of quality music this year, not to mention a lack of any complete CD's (by this I mean a CD that you actually want to own for more than one song). Your damned right that I'm just gonna download that one song if it is the only song worthwhile on the whole CD.
A car actually has a battery and uses the alternator to recharge that battery. The alternator is connected to the battery, and has a belt running to a fly wheel on the side of the engine. the alternator generates electricty which is passed to the battery, therby recharging it, just FYI for you =)
There is a mirror running at www.gravitysucks.org for the kernel download. It will be there for at least a week till things calm down, so enjoy it, and I'm wondering just how much of a hit my server will take, so this should be interesting.
I too am an often maligned Technician for a local ISP, and the customer is not always at fault. Alot of times it is simply due to inexperience, and unclear instructions. Not giving the customer the benefit of the doubt is a sure fire way to ensure you are seeking employment in the near future, AND a quick way to drive yourself to drink. Smile, we are not curing cancer...just the standard Windows bugs!
...no, NT is perfect, are you claiming linux is? if you are you are more mistaken than MS. everyone claims NT crashes at least once a day.. ever stop to think that HMMM, maybe its a buggy app? its not MSs fault that vendors and developers dont adequately test their products. any operating system can lock up from an app...
I work with NT 4 with every damned service pack available daily, and explain to me how IIS problems are due to developers? I spend some days looking for patches and bug fixes and this is what I find...
Microsoft acknowledges this is a problem - 06/18/98
How do you acknowledge a problem for 2 frikkin years? Shouldn't someone have accidentally fixed it at this point?!
To be brutally honest, I honestly wouldn't doubt that...
Probably comes with a water bottle inside it, so can have that "stepping in dog urine" feeling, just like the real thing!
I'm just looking forward to animal that doesn't chew on my cables, knock over my ornaments, yak on the carpet, drag it's ass across the lving room floor, can be shut off when watching movies, doesn't require special attention atfre being at work all day, won't throw a tantrum and destroy the house if I go away for the weekend, and lastly...DOESN'T SHED...
I say sign me up with one of these Terminator-Pets that won't wander across my keyboard while posting to Slashdot;)
Napster is evil...BNL is evil...maybe I shouldn't have thrown that rock through my neighbors window and lied and said it wasn't me when I was 12...I'm evil...
This is one of the few instances where no one is getting hurt. I have been a long time fan of BNL, and knowing there material, I'm sure these ads are hilarious, so either way we get entertained. Go buy the CD, download the CD...be evil
I have to be honest, I really don't understand the whole complaint that MPAA has...the DeCSS itself is what is in question as though, because it was made, anyone who touches it is breaking the law. Anyone who makes it available is facilitating piracy...hmmmm...something doesn't sound right about that. Ohhh well, just because this, I have made the code available here and I think we all should...they can't stop us all right?
That is exactly what I mean. I think Courtney Love said it best -
"Recording artists have essentially been giving their music away for free under the old system, so new technology that exposes our music to a larger audience can only be a good thing. Why aren't these companies working with us to create some peace?".
Most of the artists now that under the current system they get little airplay on the radio without a major label pushing them which is a tradgedy because most of my favourite bands are also some of the hardest working like the Matthew Good Band (Canadian) who managed to get out of a terrible recording contract and released an album with their own money and it still managed to top alot of charts and push them to new levels of success. With the advent Napster it appears that MANY artists welcome the chance to reach their fans without being screwed by the record company. The RIAA is like a Mafia, they simply control the means of distribution and will protect those rights via strong-arming anyone who might remove their control.
While I agree that the artists have a right to protect their music, all but a small handful of out spoken, spoiled, musicians have a problem with Napster. The RIAA has forgotten one of Murphy's Laws..."Don't rock the boat, especially when you are standing in it!". Many friends and associates I have spoken with all agree, we hear a song on the radio, hit Napster to grab a few more songs by that artist, and if it proves to be worthwhile, we buy the CD. Studies have shown that CD sales have actually increased, but that is all about to change with all the talk of boycotting. I personally will not buy a CD unless I know at least 3-4 other songs off the CD are worthwhile. That would mean that it will take up to 6 months using radio to actually hear these songs, and that assumes that smaller bands actually get the airplay they deserve. So I sit back and laugh as the RIAA loads the gun and points it at their foot...have fun boys and watch the big toe, you need that for balance
Being that I live in Edmonton and work in the IT industry I think it is fantastic that local boys (Bioware) have struck what should be a lucrative deal with Lucas Arts. Deals like this can help a cities industry enormously, and believe I could use more money;)
Speaking from experience, I do, in fact, know that not all problems are caused on a whole by the company. A lot of times it is simply a classic case of an overzealous marketing/PR team. I know at my peticular place of business I have been subjected to numerous tongue lashings from customers due to something a certain moron might have mentioned in marketing. While I do think nVidia is way out of it's depth on this issue, maybe we should not be so quick to slam the entire company.
I can't count the number of times I have seen a similiar looking device sitting on the kitchen counter of some futuristic apartment of some 80's Sci-Fi flick...Get over it people! What is the need of these companies to make largely impractical "nifty" looking boxes that are basically useless on the grand scale of things but look flashy and futuristic? For my money I will stick to a desktop thanks!
"Any and all proceeds that we receive from the transfer of your domain name registration (up to the full registration fee) will be retained by Network Solutions..." So at least they are hinting that you will not pay more, but Network Solutions fees are outrageous compared to other registrars such as openSRS. I'm at the point now where the entire thing is ridiculous to me. How many of us see domains on a daily basis that are being held strictly for the purpose of selling with no intention to use the domain?
What can I say, google has always been our biggest fan next to myself of course and the 3 friends that read the site back when I actually had time to update it.
Hey guys, sorry for the low bandwidth but we are runnig the server out of the house with an ADSL line to back it up...
Not exactly meant for slashdotting
Sorry for the off-topic but wasn't Boromir son of Denethor
and umm Faramir being his brother?
I know that Boromir was also know as a son of Gondor.
REPEAT, we have a piper down!
