  5. Avoid nut oils and night lights on Advice for a Dad-To-Be? · · Score: 1

I read about a recent study that linked nut oils, which are used in some baby products, to the development of nut allergies later in life.

Also, I read about a study that linked night lights to the development of near-sightedness later in life.

Both of these need follow-up studies to confirm the results, so YMMV.

I feel existence. There's nothing I know more directly.

Yeah, I know, you can argue this for weeks. Very interesting stuff, I'd say.

However, I still think I have the advantage. The sim argument can't just assume something that is doubtable. You can find many intelligent people who would doubt this component, so it's a flaw in the argument.

  7. Re:Simulation argument on Hubble Too Sharp? Quantum Theory Flaws? · · Score: 1

Ah yes, the simulation argument. Rather compelling, but here's one big hole in it:

It assumes that an "I" can exist within a simulation. That a collection of machine parts pretending to be my psyche (and perfectly so) will actually produce a being experiencing said existence.

In short, they're assuming one side of the Chinese Room debate.

Microsoft and Sun originally settled for $25 million, the maximum allowed under the contract. As part of the agreement, Microsoft agreed to stop shipping its Java VM in within a few years.

XP was shipped, and Microsoft decided to fulfill its promise much earlier.

    Sun got mad.

  15. Re:1st step in keeping databases clean on False Information A-Okay in Primary FBI Database · · Score: 2, Interesting

Definely. The lack of such an audit trail in Britain probably caused the big Tony Blair screw-up, where he disclosed "current" intelligence on Iraq that turned out to be lifted from someone's thesis that was more than 10 year's old.

This happened at the critical time when Colin Powell and he were making their case to show that Mr. Hussein was developing and hiding weapons of mass destruction. Although the case was strong, the mixup story was more meme-worthy than the long, detailed chain of evidence, and probably thus hurt the cause more than it was helped.
