People have been saying since the wiimote was annnounce that "it would be awesome to swing the sword in Zelda with it" that's my point. It may only take small movements but people are going to swing it around. Some are going to want to swing it around.
People who want to make grand sweeping gestures will be able to do what they want.
People who want to sit down and control using subtle, minute gestures will be able to do what they want.
So, given what we know abou the controller, people will be able to control the game as they want...
I welcome you to point out an opinion of mine that is as off-base as you denigrating an entire group of people based on the electronics they own.
About 90% (maybe less, but certainly not lower than 80%) of America does not have an HDTV. According to you they are "lower class" That may be an opinion, but I believe your average person would see that as a baseless insult.
But you are free to point out that silly usernames on a Website have some bearing on the content you are posting. I'm sure it will be as insightful as your socio-economic musings.
Except your comment wasnt about the future Nintendo system, it was about HDTV's.
And one COULD argue that someone is "lower-class" based on something as superficial as a console choice. But the person making that argument would be idiot and/or a troll.
A house without HDTV is "lower class"? give me a break.
And where is this "you're pretty much going to need broadband to get a reasonable gaming experience out of the box." coming from? And how is that not true for every console of the next generation?
On one hand, it would be horrible to have such a multi-system setup.
On the other hand, If I could dedicate a whole room just to gaming, I would love to rig up a system so that all those consoles could be ready to play and prominently displayed. Sort of a personal, interactive home gaming museum.
But I dont have the A/V knowledge or patience to even try it.
1) He may have never had a NES before, but maybe remembers playing and enjoying NES games that a friend may have had.
2) Who said that new Nintendo system is going to be $300+ ? Nothing has been announced yet. It's entirely possible that the new Nintendo system is the cheapest of the big 3 at the time of its launch.
3) One should already suspect that you can control original NES games on the new controller by turning the new controller on its side (as it will then have the d-pad and 2 buttons properly placed for this)
4) It is possible that the old games get a minor makeover in cleaning up graphics or utilizing some of the new controller's functionality.
5) I would expect to pay a reasonable amount (maybe $5 max) to get a copy of the games. However, I dont expect to pay $20 for a copy of Super Mario Brothers or the first Legend of Zelda (like Nintendo is charging for the gameboy versions of these)
6) As to why it is all desireable. If you only have one console, one would want to have as many games available for it as they could. I dont want to scour ebay for a NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc and then hook them all up to my A/V system. Even less so if there is only one game on one particular console that I am interested in. The convenience of being able to fire up one of these games without having to dig through a box in the closet, untangling a rats nest of wires to plug in that seldom-used console, constantly blowing into a old NES cartiridge, and hoping that the old hardware still works after all these years... that could easily be worth a couple of dollars.
(Speaking of one game from one console, I'd love to find a way to get ahold of "Way of the Warrior" that was released on the 3DO about 10 years ago..)
I think for a lot of these sever admins, the swearing isnt the mortal sin. It's that they want to discourage the stereotypical idiot 1337 12 year old from playing on their servers. Generally, these people probably prefer playing without having profane trash-talk thrown their way. Basically, if someone is swearing a lot, it throws up some red flags that they swearer may not be the type of person they want to play with.
Even though "Alt-Tab" is availble on Mac, Expose allows a visual alternative. It isnt that hard to think of an example when this would be more beneficial than an alt tab. Here:
You have 20 some windows open, including 10 photos just downloaded from your camera in someRandomPhotoViewerApp. You've been doing some other work (email, web, whatever) since you were last working/viewing a particular photo (let's say of your pet, which you are going to clean up and add to a website, or whatever) so that window isnt the "last previous application" and hence, not just one Alt-Tab away.
You could alt tab, and see the 10 files names, which are just random number strings. If you are lucky, you choose the photo that you want on the first try, but likely not.
Or, with focus on someRandomPhotoViewerApp you can do the Expose function that tiles all the windows for that application. You can easily see the photo you want and click on it. Done.
Some people will praise Expose to the high-heavens, and it can be a useful tool. But like everything, may not be for everyone. For me, I have Expose set up to fire when mousing to the corners of my screen. I dont alt-tab anymore. Expose will be slighty more useful with the Dashboard thingy.
Actually, I do understand and so can anyone else, except perhaps you.
One doesn't have to be able to diagnose a disease from a list of symptoms to understand how one disease affects them. I dont have to memorize the chemical processes or molecular compenents of bone to understand broken bone and how it should be mended.
Just like I couldn't fix any random car that is brought to me, but I can service my own car.
Just like I dont have to understand every programming language created, to be able to code one myself.
But you can go through life not knowing and not "wasting other's time" and hey, that's fine -
I prefer to educate myself - especially in matters that concern me - and I expect 'experts' to be able to communicate with me in a reasonable fashion - Luckily, that is how things work in the real world.
Hell, I have time to respond to trolls on slashdot, I certainly have time go Google up explanations, research papers, etc.
What world do you live in? Doctors explain diagnosis and treatments all the time.
If a Dr. says "Here. Take this pill" you do so immediately without asking a) what it's for, b) potential side-effects c) asking what drugs are similar to Pill X or d) if there are alternatives to taking pills at all?
Really? You blindly follow the advice of anyone who you deem to be an expert? You think asking such questions would be an affront to his expertice?
What kind of simpleton are you? Perhaps it is just low self-esteem and you think you are too dumb to understand or not worthy of an explanation? I ask such questions of my Dr. all the time. And GUESS WHAT I dont need an M.D. to understand his answers - WOW, according to you I must be a self-taught Doctor, ready for my own practice - jeez, and here I just thought I was just an average guy.
Oh wait, thats not it at all - I just see Drswho can talk to their patients and dont just say "I got the degree, dummy, now take this shot in the ass and STFU"
Perhaps you are just a really effective troll. There has to be a reason why you seem to equate asking for a simple justifications to be the same as asking to have someone teach you an entire discipline to an expert level. I can only assume either you are a troll or incredibly dense.
I mean "What is blood made out of" and "how does the heart work" can be explained in a relatively short amount of time by a competant "expert"? Are you really that dumb?
Oh yes, I am sure any self-claimed expert would make poor little me utterly confused with his over-bearing "technical" explanations. But here in the real world we trust and follow the advice of those people who dont talk down to us and are able to take their specific expertise and explain it to the rest of us.
And I have yet to say that anything in his list is "Wrong". I am simply sticking up for the original poster's or anyone else's right to ask "Why?"
It comes to this. If he just wants to say things, be "right" and then disappear, then fine.
If he actually wants things to change, he will have to be able to convince those responsible for implementing such changes. And since this particular piece is talking about Open Source software, there are plenty of people who this relates to and whose ears have perked up. If it means 'nursing' them, then its up to him on whether it is worth it or not. But if the "Expert" is worth a damn, he could probably get it done with much less effort.
What sort of % increase in efficiency will we see with a single menu bar over per-window bars? How is this efficiency measured? in seconds per task?
Since, this is guaranteed you should be able to tell him that if he, for example, used his computer 6 hours a day, 5 days a week for the next 10 years that he would save X amount of time.
Then he can compare that to his own estimation on time lost due to clicking on the top of individual windows to no avail for the next 2 weeks (since I've been told by 'experts' that 2 weeks is the time for one to change such habits).
But since this is guaranteed I would assume that the numbers would make it so obvious to him that one bar is better than many thate he would be willing to change right this minute.
I would say blindy following other's advice without attempting to understand is brain-dead.
The analogy you post isnt relevant and in fact particularly poor. A person SHOULD ask their mechanic to explain any advice or potential repairs. For the whole "change oil" or "bald tires" or even "underinflated tires" I - SHOCKING - have had the reasoning 'explained' to me at some point in my life - that makes following such advice easy. Do you really think a mechanic worth his salt wouldn't take 2 minutes to expaling to a particuarly clueless driver why having bald tires is a problem? Why would I go to that mechanic again?
Now if the mechanic stated that I should tap my brake pedal first before fully applying pressure to the brake pedal when wanting to stop the car... yeah, I think I'm going to either get an explanation from him, and ask around for other opinions after I get that explanation if it doesnt fully make sense to me.
And - to Mr. Thomas's credit - he does do a good job of explaining himself in some of the items. Take the entire "Help" Section of his list, for example. Some of the items without explanation make sense to me anyways (even though I'm not an "Expert") but some dont makes sense, and need more explanation as to what he's trying to get at - as the Original Poster noted - such as not using "username"
Is it a capitalization issue? An issue of seperating the words? Should a different label be used altogether?
Regarding 'reboot' - yes, its a technical term. What does he suggest be used instead? Is "Restart" - as was suggested elsewhere in the thread - more clear or just changing words to another potentially unclear label for those who are technologically experienced?
Seemingly answering these questions would take all of 30 seconds.
So again, any expert who would honestly not take the time to explain his (or "the") reasoning to the people who would be implementing the changes is not worth listening to. And likely, wont be very effective in generating the change that he is advocating.
If he is unwilling or uable to explain their suggestions beyond "I'm an expert and you should do what I say" then he should get used to others not following up on his suggestions.
I dont know the guy in question, but if he is as unhelpful as your posts are, I dont expect there will be many people lining up to follow his "Expert" advice.
You are absolutely on the right track. One will have to toss out the "Madden" model of controlling and 'succeeding'.
The extreme difficulty would be designing an Offensive Lineman vs Defensive Lineman (Or more generally a Blocking vs Shed Blocker) battle that requires more than mindless button mashing and that can be resolved in the second or two that most of these interactions involve in the Real Life game.
Other positions will fit well with existing play styles, but I would assume one will have to Look at the Tackle Vs Tackle evasion/break as well as some player involved method of Catching a ball that is more than just running yourself into the path of the ball.
I guess just looking back at this (long-winded) post, the main challenge is that in most MMOs right now, the challenges are generally long involved processes. "Killing the Mob" generally involves multiple attacks that allows a few seconds or a minute or more of player interaction. In sports, these 'challenges' are generally a second or two. How to pack strategy and player interaction into these much shorter challenges is the key issue.
The money to pay the players does come from tickets. And Corportate Skyboxes, and naming rights, and TV/other media money, and other sources to varied and many to list.
However I would be willing to bet the plan to make those seats $60 was in place before signing $RANDOM_EURO_SKATER.
Most owners arent going to spend themselves into the red, THEN raise ticket prices to compensate.
Usually, they are going to have an idea on the demand on tickets and decide their payroll from there. If they think that having a better team will = better attendence (and 99% of the time it does) and they believe that demand will be enough to make ticket price increases a good thing, then they will do so. They get the added benefit of making it look like the increases are all because of $RANDOM_EURO_SKATER so if the team fails to meet managements quality expectations, the can have the abuse heaped onto their expensive Free Agent.
Now I'm a baseball fan, and I think a salary cap there would be disasterous. However, there is something to be said for such caps to be imposed on lesser leagues (Like the MLS, or women's leagues - just trying to survive) I dont know if the NHL has been marginalized into a lesser league.
Since the NFL got the salary cap did ticket prices go down? No.
Since the NBA got the salary cap did ticket prices go down? No.
Anyone fan who thinks that a league's salary structures affect their prices are living in a dream world. They are not even reasonably affected by normal economic standards, as you rarely see teams drop ticket prices when faced with near empty stadiums (see: the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, who get out-drawn by the local AHL team.)
But that's OK. The owners are happy that you eat their shit and think it's choclate cake.
You have a game (NBA Ballers) in which your performance nets you currency. That currency allows one to buy homes/cars/"posse" - which is all secondary to the game.
You then state that (disregarding the off-base prostitution remarks):
That kind of selfish, materialistic bullshit is NOT appropriate for everyone
If this isn't your intention, then state it more clearly.
No. The ultra-realistic game will keep the players and the game the same.
It will, however, allow you to listen to simulated talk-radio shows after each game. If one of your star players had a big home-run, you get to listen to fat slobs with no knowledge of weight-training - or even exercise in general -pontificate about the use of steriods in sports and freely slander any athlete they feel like.
I was having problems at where the sound in the game would cut out, and all I would get is high pitched squeal. I would often restart, and then everything woule be OK for a while, then the squeal would return.

Only a fool or an idiot believes what any company says during their pre-launch period.
There's no need for prejudice.
Probably becuase it isnt a valid concern.
They have an artist's name, and maybe an IP. So what?
They can keep that information as far as I'm concerned,
and they can use it to further their business concerns, or start a blood orgy. whatever.
You sound extremely paranoid.
Indeed it is Sir Coward.
If you cared, you'd try it out yourself.

How silly of me to assume so.
OK, so you don't understand it either.

If this isn't your intention, then state it more clearly.
I think he has.
You are saying that making money and then spending it in a game makes it unsuitable for
children.
I dont think it is out of line to disagree with that point of view. In fact, I would think most people would disagree with that.
No. The ultra-realistic game will keep the players and the game the same.
