It's hard to beat a Palm Pilot when there was (and still is to a degree) such a HUGE community of developers. I even bought a licensed copy of DateBk6 about a year ago, those guys are still going strong.

Like many have echoed in here, nobody that isn't alrady passionate about stuff like this is going to really give a hoot about decentralization. You have to "beat" Facebook at their interface. Then people will like it. Here's my take - K.I.S.S. Facebook's interface is already very simple. We have to almost think of the old-school BBSes (the original decentralized social networks) and see how clean some of those interfaces were. I personally would love to see an ANSi re-implementation in HTML5. People *do* have the capacity to use the keyboard to navigate, and once they learn it, as long as it's efficient, people will start flocking. There's nothing wrong with a menu system - UI simplicity is Facebook's whole goal, after all. It's just that they have so much sh*t going on that it's almost impossible to do. That's everyone's problem with design. Not that I'm a designer, but I did make my own ANSi menus for Renegade back in the day. And they rocked.

I recently moved to ChunkVNC ( www.chunkvnc.com ) and it works great as well.

    Benefits of UVNC SC/ChunkVNC:
    + It's free (No subscription, no one-time-charge)
+ It only runs when the user runs it (and removes itself when the session ends)
+ No end-user port forwarding required (as the user is creating an outgoing connection, not allowing one in - a la "reverse server connection")
    + Customizable

    I highly recommend it.

Schools move at the pace of their funding, and the U.S. educational system is horribly ridden with red tape as well as 'certain vendors' that wouldn't want that due to loss of money somewhere along the line. Also, schools have so many regulations to follow, so many student/teacher privacy issues, blah blah blah...ugh.

I've worked with California schools as a technical consultant/engineer in the past, and let me tell you... for the most part, the people on the ground (teachers, other staff) are respectable and well open to doing things like this (though they won't understand it one bit)... but the system itself is a total bitch. It ends up imploding upon itself very often, in my experience. Kinda sucks.

  20. COMMAND: gnome3 --is[--not]-for-me on Linux Mint 12 Released Today · · Score: 1

I dunno. I've been using different WMs/DEs since 1995. I think Gnome3 has really struck a balance with usability and intuition.

    - First off, it seems like they ripped off OSX with their configuration GUI. I always loved that config. It's missing (some obvious) advanced settings, but hey. I'll file my feture requests/bug reports, be an active part of improving open source software, and I'll watch it get better.

    - Gnome3 seems pretty feng shui with window placement, mouse movement for options, etc. Again, it's missing some advanced functionality (keyboard shortcuts, Gnome-DO typing-command function could, in addition to xdg menu entries it could search local path, maybe even detect if something needs to be run in a terminal?)

    - The new Nautilus has a LOT to be desired. Right now on Debian Testing, (I mean, I'm excited it's even in Testing, I'm not complaining!) you can't CTRL+V to paste. I'm sure it's just a small oversight, and I'm not about to get my panties in a bunch because of it. Again, I'm going to be an active part of OSS and file my bug reports, maybe go on IRC or a mailing list, and help it get figured out respectably. There's a lot of missing stuff, but it's definitely elegant enough. It looks beautiful, the start of something really big I think.

    - I dunno, I just really love the idea of *NOT* having to aim your mouse cursor over a small rectangular label to bring up windows you're working with. One of my favorite things about X in general is that you can ALT+drag windows from any point, not just the titlebar. It's just faster. It feels more natural. Remembering this and building other parts of the UI to reflect it is a very smart choice IMHO. I don't think that idea is popular just because they might want to target tablets/touch screens.

    - I can't wait until the notifications are worked out.

    - I can't wait until there are more extensions so I can have my weather/system monitor/xeyes back :)

    - I can't wait until it works better under LTSP (not fat-clients, just good old traditional remote X). I'm typing this on my thin client downstairs, and it's using XFCE. I really think Gnome3 would look slick on my flat screen.

Take it or leave it. I think it's a good sign that people are bitching about it. Change is difficult, and it shows the motivation to want to help improve and fine-tune it to a long-lasting result. Just don't insult it, that's not respectable to the hard working devs. And you don't have to use it. It *is* your choice, after all.

I'm a current T-Mobile customer with 2 cell phones on a single plan (one for me and one for my wife). After years of horrible customer service experiences, sub-par network service and, of course, after being psychologically sick of giving a company money that was involved with wholesale illegal wiretapping, we canceled our 2 cell phones, DSL service, and home landline (all AT&T).

We went to T-Mobile because they were one of the only other companies left. They were "new" to us, a fresh company with young motivated employees that actually sounded genuinely glad to help you. We were so happy with them.

When we heard about the pending merger with AT&T, we immediately started looking around. We haven't switched yet, but as soon as the merger was complete we would have broken our contract (we were pretty sure there would be something we could say about not paying an early cancellation fee since a merger wasn't in our contract). Over the past few months, we noticed little things start happening with our account (which may or may not be related to the merger, yet we never experienced it before the word was out). Extra bill charges, randomly having our account turn on Internet access on my wife's cell phone without us asking for it (and them charging us $30/month for it), and even when we called them, the vibrance in their voices were completely gone. I might be sounding wishy-washy about the customer service enthusiasm, but seriously. It was a DRAMATIC change. It already seemed like the call centers were moved to AT&T.

I really hope this thing is blocked. I want to stick with T-Mobile. I want to give my money to a company that isn't involved with an enormous constitutional rights violation. I want to be able to choose. I don't want another Ma Bell.
