I power my machines down at night and never had a mechanical failure. I do consider myself in the minority though.
But the cost of replacing hardware is nothing compared to running several hundred watts each per desktop. Even in sleep mode they do take up power and most desktops do not go into sleep mode anyway.
All it takes is a minute for the power user to wait for the system to boot up. That minute could be wasted going to the coffee machine and chatting with other workers. Infact the Gartner group did a study that a coffee pot costs $40,000 a year in lost productivity because people get coffee and chat rather than work. UPS has a policy of no food or drink at the desk for this reason because productivity is lower.
Well I am not a morning person but coming in early and finishing early makes it look like your a workaholic. Downtime is bad but if your job is salaried I can see why he would be pissed or wondered if he needed you full time.
How about studying and getting straight A's to bring myself out of poverty while I work as well and try to better myself for my family.
My wife is the addict and she helps level my character because I have more important things to do than play wow all day. We play occasionally as its our time.
In my mind she earned it after going to get her masters and working full time as a teacher and also tutoring after school. I assume I have to earn my right to play it if I have people dependent on me. Why should I play games? Can't I be making money doing something? I have seen people flunk out of school and ruin their lives for not working hard enough professional so yes it makes a difference. This is true when you have people dependent on you.
Working is the whole meaning of life or I should say a rather big proportion.
Negative reinforcement sucks but after taking crappy jobs and leaving IT several years ago it made me realize how lucky I had it.
Whenever I goof off at school or work I just think "well I am sure OfficeMax or that amusement park I used to work for picking up trash at 5:30am needs my help. Maybe I should give them a call..". It motives me to appreciate my boss and work to make sure I stay where I am and give them my best even if its not ideal. There are lots of crappy things you can be doing for little pay which is true even with a college degree.
Perhaps your job is not ideal which is why you keep daydreaming? Or your unchallenged? Then you need to accept more responsibilities at work or try something different elsewhere? Life is too short.
I once had an old boss who loved WindowsNT over Netware back in 99. Because it was a piece of crap it would mean a bigger budget for his department and more jobs for IT professionals and larger salaries.
Not being able to find IT work again when the.com crash happened I empathize with him in disbelief because it makes alot of sense.
I should have learned more.NET and ASP rather than Java. Thats where more nursin gis needed but it goes agaisnt the ethics of why IT exists in teh first place and the goal of work. ITs to make the company money.
Maybe as a CEO of a major telecom I could charge an extra $5 a month to firewall sites.... oh wait proxies. Nevermind unless there is a way to block them too.
Or I could just charge $5 a month more and have the kids still find free proxies to go around it.
In the meantime a simple fix in the/system32/etc/host file by adding the I.P. for www.barneythedinosaur.com for www.myspace.com scares my kids quite well and blocks myspace. Good thing they haven't figured out that one yet.
Doing this will destroy the restore cd backup software stored on the hard drive.
Many manufactors like my notebook only have Vista drivers so I cant downgrade anyway. This surprised me as I was looking forward to do so when I got the laptop home.
XP offered little improvement over XP and came with an annoying fisher price interface and installation was slower.
However XP is faster than w2k on modern hardware because of new caching techniques.
XP offered better better management and cleartype fonts for LCD monitors and a better start menu.
Vista is just worse and offers less functionality with a huge loss in performance. VIsta is not as bad as WindowsME like many here have stated but to me its a DOS4.
I have a brand new tashiba too and its loaded with crap and spyware and mcafee security center.
Just uninstall these apps and do a disk defrag and it will behave normally... well for a Vista system.
Unfortuntaley Toshiba uses hardware with no XP drivers so I can't downgrade. All the restore apps for the cd are on the hard drive so I can't even wipe it and put ubuntu on it without the risk of losing msoffice forever.
This will bring your disk access speeds close to XP with or without sp1. SP1 from what I read mainly effects lan speeds.
With all these things going on the disk access will slow down considerable and no service pack will fix it. Most users dont care and just want their system to work so this is why its enabled by VISTA by default.
Many international marketers are focusing on third world countries. I would think logically that this would be a bad idea profit wise but many third world countries have a middle class or an upper class that would be similiar to our lower middle class. Coke and McDonalds have made quite a bit of money in these countries though the top third is the only part that can afford them now.
THe governments are the main customers and I think opening up internet to the world is the same as improving infastructure which is why they can't develop.
The problem I have with OSX is that its a bad programmer platform for anything non mac or web.
Mono is not on OXS yet (I could be wrong) and Java under Leopard is really not support that well or at all anymore. Even a simple JOptionpane will not display the title of the applet or program.
ALso what about using KDE and gnome libraries and apis? Sure you can run X but its not that well support or integrated with aqua.
Linux is still ahead in these areas but OSX has the apps like Office and photoshop so it depends what you use.
If tort reform happaned insurance rates will go down and we can hire more older people people and others with dissabilities.
Yes it happens and the laws cause discrimination. My old man really was forced to retire because he is a gray hair and a former VP. Obviously he has the money to sue if he is wrongfully terminated and HR knows it. So they chose to hire a younger guy because its the liability is much less. Also insurance policies kind of encourage discrimination.
But sadly its true that many employers do not like to hire women for the reasons you described. At the school district I work for I see it and by law they have to partially compensate. In France its so bad that they just dont hire women and its becoming a problem. Over there you have to pay them 90% of their salary if they leave for a year. Its no surprise they prefer to hire men.
The laws need to be eradicated as they actually cause discrimination rather than save it.
The 20th century was terrible and right now its near impossible for people with a disability or age (gray hairs) to find work due to the threat of lawsuits.
Businesses should have the right to fire and hire whom they please for maximum efficiency. I know you mocked yourself but the threat of lawsuits can seriously damage a companies profitability. If you owned an airline and a few employees got in the paper for having a drunken lesbian orgy at an airport bar offduty what would you do? That was a real case where a few off duty airline attendents were arrested for drinking heavily and one woman foundling another women's breasts.
The airline could still be sued for sexual harassment because they were salaried and everyone knew they worked for Delta or whoever the airline was.
So yes termination was appropriate for the off duty attendants.
After that do a google search for themes and you can find a theme that can make the start menu look like XP. Its not elegant but the color schemes and start menu drive me crazy too. Especially with all teh garbage at the front of the menu thats bundled with your computer and all the real folders where you do work on the bottom.
I bought a new notebook with Vista and I notice basic i/o is much slower than Vista. Do programs launch quicker? It seems openoffice is faster but the last computer I ran it on was much slower.
I bought a new laptop last week which is a sparkling new AMD Turion x2 dual core with 2 gigs of ram and a fast 7200 rpm 200 gig drive and it came with Vista. My previous laptop was a Compaq which had a 1.7 ghz PentiumM with only 1 gig of ram and a slooww 4200 rpm drive running XP.
Man is this new machine slower than my compaq thanks to Vista. I could transfer hundreds of megs off my flashdrive to my XP machine with a 4200 rpm in about a minute. It takes 10x to do the same procedure with this new machine with a 7200 rpm drive. I/O really is crippled and it just feels like a downgrade though this machine is easily 3x as fast as my old one.
If I could downgrade to XP I could. There are no drivers for my video card or wifi card otherwise I would do it.
Yes its the new thing to hate Vista but there are some serious issues with it. This is especially true in a corporate environment where already slow network connection can occur with XP will take many times as long with Vista.
Maybe the situation will improve with a service pack but so far I use it because I have too and not because I had a choice. To me this is the Dos4 for the NT line.
Windows which is now discovering these new things called micro kernels and moving things out of ring0. Linux is up to date with usb and proc filesystems which are object oriented and beryl can do things that make Vista look primitive regardless of the fact that yes,/,/bin, and/usr are 30 years old. How old is the c:\ prompt?
Except copying files from your share at work or to your thumdrive.... check for drm... check for drm... etc. The performance sucks as a result not to mention many network connections become saturated quickly if you play an audio file due to teh I/O and DMA requests to check all the bits for copyrighted material.
I think I will skip this release and put it with windowsME and Dos4 in the recycle bin.
When I read comments like this I do wonder what is worse? The virus or the software to get rid of it?
I would fire anyone who installed such screwed up software. SOmething is out of wack
How much money does a computer use doing nothing?

I am sick of that game and all she does is play it.

Even Star Fleet Officers if it ever comes out of vaporware.
For a difficult course I typically read the book, then highlight, then if its really hard make notes on the things I read twice.
Its time consuming but saved my butt in business law and other courses that requires a vast amount of memorization and knowledge.
Also when I was a science major I wrote down the period table and lists of ions 10x like spelling in elementary school.
IT works.

He was sarcastic and mocked that opinion.

I bought a new notebook with Vista and I notice basic i/o is much slower than Vista. Do programs launch quicker? It seems openoffice is faster but the last computer I ran it on was much slower.

Its better than WindowsME I suppose.

... about 2 megs per second under Vista.
WIth 1 million writes per second before the ram goes bad I would be worried about reliability. I hope the firmwire at least maps out bad sectors.
