  1. Who Owns the Mineral Right? on China Outlines Moon Project Goals · · Score: 2, Interesting

Is there some kind of international agreement dictating ownership? Or is this like the new world - a first-come, first-served queue?

  2. COBOL Will Go Eventually... on Microsoft Makes Push for COBOL Migration · · Score: 1

However, I see it going by keeping the mainframe and using it as a DB2 data store and migrating the application code to Java on Linux.

  3. Site Says 3 Studies on Killing Cancer With a Virus · · Score: 1

I dunno... maybe for statistical purposes small groups are necessary, but I worked with an Investigational Drug team at a major university and they very often used study size greater than 40 and they were one of *many* studies being funded simultaneously.

  4. Based on Clinical Trails to Date?? on Killing Cancer With a Virus · · Score: 2

Check out the link with the details on the trails conducted. Study groups of 18.... 24....

This investigational drug/virus has a long way to go before there is acceptance.

  5. From a Real World Experience... on Developers Lose With Proprietary Software · · Score: 5, Insightful

We gave our source to our paying customers when we decided to drop the product and switch directions.

Everyone seemed pleased with the arrangement, even though I doubt they were pleased when they got the gazillion lines of C++ code without support.

And to think my idea of going open source was ridiculed by management 6 months before we flamed out.

    Sheesh...

  6. iTunes Desperately Needs More Music on Comparing Online Music Offerings · · Score: 1

I keep hearing about this "signing of indies" but I've yet to see much. Industrial Music is virtually non-existent. And like you state... 80's music is weak. They have the entire Ramones and Talking Heads collection... yet no Cars. WTF?

And way too much "Greatest Hits" albums. And the "partial album"... that is just plain annoying. Why can't they offer the entire album!?!

  7. Environmental Wacko Alert on Toshiba Pushes Safe, Small Nuclear Reactor Design · · Score: 1

Oh, please. The damage done by strip mining 50 years ago is far worse. I dare you drive down Bolt Mtn Road in WV to see the "high walls".

Mountain Top Removal mining can be done environmentally sound, if proper engineering is applied. There are safeguards to prevent what you call "moon scape"... whatever that is.

  8. Recording Pro versus Hobbyist on The Incredible Shrinking Recording Studio · · Score: 1

What this simple 6 paragraph 'story' fails to mention is...
    1. These guys are PRO's. They mention Berklee school of music requiring laptops. That should be a clue.
    2. They fail to mention the THOUSANDS of DOLLARS in PLUGINs these pro's use. Please... this is not SoundBlaster.
    3. They fail to mention the RECORDING PROCESS. You know those little details like PRE-AMPS, A/D convertors, compressors, EQ. TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars invested here.
    4. No mention of the PRO mastering house. Invaluable.
    5. Did I mention these guys are PRO's???

What does this help? Guys like me who want to cut some basic tracks in ProTools and then take a ZIP disc into the studio and finish the project. Or after recording, using the plugins to finalize the project before the mastering process.

  9. That's Why Coal is the Answer (for now) on Power Plant Fueled By Nut Shells · · Score: 1

2,500MW versus 1.5MW Hmm... how many of those plants will you need to equal 1 large coal-fired plant.

  10. Re: People aren't going to support that... on Engineers Design Safer SUV · · Score: 1

The politicians are afraid of the people who drive these things and they will do nothing to mandate more fuel efficiency nor safety (unless it's the SUV's occupants).

SUV's have been around since the 60's. Chevy Suburbans and Blazers have been made for over 30 years, it's only when they've become some kind of bizarre status symbol has the popularity soared. I resist taking them off the roads because of the 5% that actually *need* these monsters.

Makes you wonder the price of this status... while filling up my 30+mpg Jetta the other day, the previous customer left their receipt. It was $39. That's what I spend in a month on gas!

  11. Solution on Light Bulb Replacements · · Score: 1

No... I don't work for them.

  12. Re: Wintel Users Never Learn on SoBig: Worst is Yet to Come · · Score: 1

I just got out of a meeting about this virus and how it's affecting corporate messaging/email. Everyone started whining about their home PC's and of course I had to interject about my virus-free Mac OSX Power Mac at home.

They just looked at me with their open mouths and vacant stare. Meeting adjorned.

  13. Good Catch on Gartner Says Delay Linux Deployment Due to SCO · · Score: 1

They've been known to bash Apple and attempt to diminish any good fortunes from Apple, so take this with a grain of salt.

  14. Obviously Coming From a 20-Something on USS Ronald Reagan Commissioning Tomorrow · · Score: 1

Because anyone that lived through the late-70's and the total disaster the economy was in would never post anything like this. The current economy and the recession of '91 are insignificant events compared to the late 70's.

Runaway inflation coupled with anemic GDP growth was a disaster. Thank Reagan for allowing Volker to reign in this disaster.

I'm not a Republican, but to live thru this hell is something I wish to revisit. Does anyone wonder why no one cares about Jimmy Carter or the baffoon Ford??

  15. Using Your Logic on Freenet Creator Debates RIAA · · Score: 1

The VCR Record button is illegal. "If you don't own a license... blah, blah, blah".

This is all about control. The RIAA's sponsors *control* over the market and the artist. Better jump on the iTunes bandwagon or face extinction.

  16. Sybase == Microsoft on The Bug · · Score: 2, Informative

I guess u missed the part of Microsoft and their 'arrangement' with Sybase in the mid-90's where the basically stole their code which then became SQL Server?

  18. Depends on the Individual on Ageism in IT? · · Score: 5, Interesting

My son and I started taking drum lessons 8 months ago - together. There is no comparison. While he may be more technical and able to do the marching snare roll, etc. I rock all over him on a kit. We both put in the same amount of practice time.

But I love the looks I get from the middle age women as I walk out of the lesson room. Which is probably the root of the problem. Most middle age folks don't think someone their age *should* be learning new skills and definitely not having fun!

  19. Re:Huge decrease? on 60G Nomad Zen vs. The iPod · · Score: 1

While I agree with the original statement that recording at 48 vs 44.1 for perceived 'quality' is a questionable undertaking, I also agree with what you say... products like Bias Peak offer sample rate conversion.

Of course, only 'pro' or 'semi-pro' folks would probably have a copy of Peak.

  20. Not Arguing That Fact on Apple Sells A Million Songs in Debut Week · · Score: 1

Nonetheless, these companies own the copyrights. And as much as that fact totally blows - barring social upheaval - it ain't gonna change.

Therefore, introducing a new distribution format can only HELP the artist, especially indy's.

A new artist will think..."hmmm I sign with Time-Warner I get 1 cent and get exposure via the radio and adds in stores. I sign with Nettwerk, I get 5 cent and my tunes are purchased via iTunes just like the big boys. In 2005, 70% of tunes are bought via iTunes". New artist chooses indy and another nail in the coffin of the big boys.

Atleast, that's what I HOPE will happen. ;-)

  21. So How Do Artists Make Any Money??? on Apple Sells A Million Songs in Debut Week · · Score: 1

Or should they? Should they just live as paupers or record 'in their spare time'? Or just the take from playing live?

Until this question is answered - minus any socialist dogma - iTunes store remains a viable option atleast one of the many middlemen are cut out

Music ain't free... why can't u understand that?

  22. You Got It!!! on Apple Sells A Million Songs in Debut Week · · Score: 1

Because in the iTunes store (which I really like, BTW) what differentiates the indy from the mainstream artist? Nothing (except for the splash screen adverts). A user browses under genre which is probably alphabetical.

This levels the playing field - as much as we could probably hope for at this point.

  23. $1000 Cables??? on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 2, Insightful

You are naive enough to buy 'special' cables...errr.... snake oil cables - yet call .99/song a rip-off! Oh that's just too much!!

C++ is great language when speed and reliability on the server is required.
