In other words, if a bank gives out a load based on SSN alone, let _them_ hold the bag on it.

How long do you think SSN theft will remain profitable after we do that?

i have a full fledged ipod (g5 w/ video) and that works great for keeping my total music collection. its fragile, but that's fine, because i don't use it to work out nor otherwise place it in situations of physical danger.

i also have ishuffle, and i use it for jogging and i know it'll never break. there's no hard drive, no display, nothing. and its light as a feather. no extra protection or care needed. plus it doesn't scratch (and even if it did, i wouldn't care).

so, i have these two niches filled and just see no room for nano.

    or what am i missing?

  20. Re:Real ID on Real ID Act Poses Technical Challenges · · Score: 1

what you say is true, however, the idea i think is to deter, make it tougher for the terrorists to do whatever it is they're planning. this is but a one step of many that must be taken to improve protection against terrorists.

its like car anti-theft. all these silly devices are no match to a pro thief, but they improve chances that he/she wont bother with your car and move to the next.

same thing here. if before getting driver's license was easy, now its not. so they have to either work harder at getting valid identification (=higher chances to trip on something) or would have to stay low profile, which makes it tougher to do routine things like rent cars, trucks etcetera.

bottom line, i dont subscribe to the argument that this new id system doesnt help, it does.

what i certainly do agree with is, measures must be taken so that there is no/minimal abuse of this technology and hopefully it doesnt become as much hassle as i think it can.

this is a way too simplistic a view. language does matter, and on many levels.

when you study programming, it shapes your mind. when building software, it shapes the universe in which you model your target system. not to mention realities of software development in real life (here on earth, may be on your planet its different). you have to train people, you have to get people to work together. and different languages and environments have different devices to support (or, frankly, to discourage) these things.

sure, i get your point, its not all language. and i agree with you there. there are activities in software developmeent that have nothing to do with coding. and, of course, one can write crappy code in any language. but having said that, when it comes to coding, importance of matching language to the job is tough to overestimate.

on the other hand, be sure to put things in perspective and realize that there are scientific types on both sides, who just want to advance the science. best science isnt done for money anyways. money is just a means, not the end.

i guess what i'm saying is, while on some level this is always going to be a pissing contest, lets on our level keep mutual admiration for great achievements out of it.
