This. The dissociative used by some surgeons (like my dad) was developed in the concentration camps as a truth serum. It puts you into a twilight where you can respond to questions, but are completely unaware of what you are saying. When it wears off, you remember NOTHING. I know this because I went under for surgery using that drug. Apparently I kept trying to talk during the surgery (on my jaw) so I had these 2 bruises from where they were having to hold my mouth open. At any rate, FANTASTIC stuff. But to imagine all the healthy people it was tested on just makes me shudder.

I wouldn't say they were modifying copyrighted content, per se. The offense they are trying to infer is making a device that is modifying the format of the time slot, reducing the broadcasters ability to monetize the show. It's not an issue of modifying the story being shown and treating it as their own work.

I tried this when my grandfather died and I was strapped for cash, but the departure times were only every couple of days. I need better granularity than that. I don't always want to leave at 8:00 am on a Saturday and return on Tuesday at 11:00. Basically, for the trip I needed, they only made bi-weekly trips that did not even come close to coinciding with my needs. Sad. I was kinda excited. I've never been on a real train before. Still haven't.

No no, I got it. I totally understand what you're saying. You are absolutely correct as long as everyone plays by the rules. I was just saying that there are businesses out there that are willing to not charge tax AND not pay the tax. They simply mark it as a tax-exempt sale or roll it into one of the accounts that ARE exempt. There is no way for the powers that be to tell other than the merchant reporting it on its monthly sales tax returns. The only way to prevent this from happening at all is to require all tax-exempt purchases from being made with a traceable payment, say check or CC.

You see, the retailer has to pay that tax whether or not they pass it on to you. They're not going to give me free money.

You see, the retailer is supposed to pay that tax if they pass it on to you.

    FTFY

There are legitimate customers that buy from retail stores that do not pay taxes. Religious organizations, Non-Profits, ALL government entities, ad nauseum. The retailer isn't expected to pay the tax in their stead, it just doesn't get collected. I have worked for 2 of the above mentioned non-taxed groups and have paid cash for tax-exempt sales on numerous occasions. There is no way for the store or the tax collector to tell if the sale was for my job, or me personally.

I can see some less than scrupulous stores passing cash sales as wholesale/Out of State/Exempt to less than scrupulous customers. Giving someone a 9% discount can buy a lot of loyalty, even if they have 1-2% higher profit margin.

Don't infer from this that I am at all comfortable with CC tracking or suspicion based on use of cash. I'm not.

I think the opposite. It's not the sub charge that's killing them. It's the initial outlay for the HD hardware. Far too expensive. My Tivo is cheaper than my Cox DVR, once you factor in the DVR Service Charge plus the DVR Rental Fee. Not to mention if my Cox DVR dies, they bring me another one. I have to shell out another 5 bills to replace a broken Tivo. There aren't many months I have where losing $500 unexpectedly wouldn't hurt. An extra 8 bucks a month is worth the insurance of not having enough to replace my stuff until I've saved enough. All that being said, nobody, and I mean nobody, comes close to the Tivo's UI. I would have switched to U-verse if their software wasn't so awful.

No, Jackass. Read the bill. It is quite specific in who is required to follow these rules and on what items. The items listed are very precise, and they are all things that are commonly stolen. What they are doing is trying to force a paper trail on an abused system that basically makes junk/scrap dealers record who they are paying and what for to prevent them from being used as quasi-fences. That's it. To put it in perspective, contractors here will install an A/C system in a new house, and then have to remove the copper coils from inside to prevent them from being stolen by copper thieves. Copper is only useful to a thief in that it can be very conveniently and anonymously be sold to a junkyard as scrap. So copper = cash to a thief. This law will help curtail some of that by making the scrap company responsible for recording these transactions, making it easier to track back who brought in what piece of stolen property.
